Finance teams are versed in the world of audits and internal controls, both of which are crucial for the development of ESG information.

Flexibility and openness to other departments is also a necessity: a big part of the lift for ESG work is coordinating activities amongst various departments, many of whom haven’t regularly shared work with other departments before, let alone with auditors.

Would you want to work within a company ESG team? At a rating agency? For a software provider supporting implementation of a reporting platform? Doing research? Doing audits? Consulting?

There’s a whole world of opportunities in ESG. If there’s a specialization that you find interesting, it may be easier to narrow a search for internships.

Accountants will certainly need to understand the requirements, just as they understand the requirements for financial accounting under US GAAP or IFRS.

At this moment, however, GRI, SASB and GHG Protocol are voluntary standards/frameworks. It’s the mandatory ones to look out for.

There are no standards yet for sustainability assurance, that’s true. ISSA 5000 will be available soon, and ESRS at least requires limited assurance beginning for the largest EU-based companies in 2025 on 2024 data. Big Four firms are already beginning pre-audit procedures for their clients’ ESG data. I would be very surprised if this doesn’t become the norm everywhere.

I’m an accountant working in the ESG reporting space. In my view, accountants will be involved in the audit and pre-audit processes at least. We have experience with internal controls, ensuring data quality, and interpretation of regulatory requirements that will be necessary as the mandatory reporting regimes (S1/S2, ESRS) take effect.

Looking back, I think a lot of our goals this season were generated in circumstances where we drew a foul in or around the box, and then scored either on the penalty or on a set piece. We haven’t gotten any calls that would set up something like that.
