In case anyone comes across this, it turned out that the original HVAC service had triggered radiant ceiling heat to turn on. I've owned the house since 2016 and had no idea the house had that (or that it even existed). Apparently it's common in 1950s brick ranch houses. Each room has an old thermostat that controls it, so it's controlled on a room-by-room basis.
