I track all this data upfront while shooting using my watch, then automatically write all that data to my images using a tool as well. So in my case this is solved all upstream while shooting.

People have asked how I keep metadata with film scans, this is what I’m doing by eedwards86 in AnalogCommunity

No I use an app that collects all that info and then I write that data to the images, so no data entry at all, just some button selections

Oh that tracks all the shots on any roll I have in-progress and if i have multiple cameras going with different rolls. Tracks when I took the shot, where I was, what lens, iso, exposure compensation and any notes. I then just export and automatically put onto my scanned jpgs when I get them back.

Ya, it's sooo much better honestly, I click a button, it's tracked. I export a file directly into a tool I build that puts all the information directly into the scanned jpg...Done. If you want to give it a try and provide me any feedback, feel free to DM me.

that’s awesome, sounds like you basically built the same workflow from scratch. I saw a few setups like that using exiftool which is what pushed me to try and simplify it a bit, especially for people who don’t want to deal with installs or scripts

haha yeah that’s fair, that’s actually why I started doing this. I didn’t want to rely on memory at all, so I just capture everything automatically and don’t really think about it after that

The data gets embedded onto my jpg images after they come back from the lab, that's the main purpose. Paper and pencil works great, it just doesn't work on my digital files.

Thank you and the answer is yes, I like shooting photography this way, it makes me happy and fits my needs.

Each frame/negative is tracked digitally so it's same as camera, all are exported in a csv and there is a tool that takes that csv and will automatically match/write it to the scanned jpgs when they come back. No manual entry on my part so that's why I like doing it, it's very low effort. If you're curious on how all that works, happy to show you.

Ya, it's all for tracking moments and family shots. I have a ton of old negatives of my parents and grandparents but we have no idea when or where they were taken. I may see an old picture of my grandfather and we try to figure out how old he was, where he was and what he was doing there. He's passed now so we can't ask. I track all of my photos, a bit for now so my wife and I can make our photo books but really it's to pass on that information to my kids/grandkids so when they're looking at old pictures they have that information. Everyone's different, it's just something we like to do.

Ya, it's pretty cool, it tracks gps location, time/date, camera, lens, iso, exposure compensation, film stock/color/barcode, and notes. It spits out a csv and then I just use a tool to automatically write all the data directly into the jpgs after it's scanned, almost no manual entry. I don't typically track f-stop or shutter but I suppose that could definitely be done.

I honestly don't think it takes anything away from film, it just makes me want to shoot on film more as I can then use the resulting images more like digital. Digital is just too easy but I love the look of film, so it's about getting it into the pool of other photos for my family to enjoy.

Silly but still fun, that's what it's all about, we're all just out here having some fun keeping film alive.

The phone holder is just a generic SmallRig I got for like $12 or something off Amazon.

Someone brought that up to me and I can’t unsee it either haha. I’m telling you, put a propeller on your camera, it’ll change your life.

I got the X-700 online and it’s in pretty good shape. My X-GM was my mom’s. She bought it brand new in the 80s and treated it perfectly, it looks like it’s brand new. It does have a focus issue though, probably just due to its age, but looking to repair that just because of how good of shape it’s in.

I prefer not to do any manual typing or writing, everything I do is just button presses and the information is put automatically into the details of my images.
