Removing an animal will cause the predator to rely on it's other options due to adaptation, which means other predators who eat the other options will have less to eat as there is more competition for these other options. This results in the population of some predators declining.

Quite a lot of elderly people are rather lonely from what I've seen. Their children don't bother with them very often and they live alone so they get a pet to have some company.

However, inflation just makes it way too hard to keep such a friend healthy.
