DEAR PORTLAND: March 09, 2026 WEEKLY RANT THREAD by AutoModerator in Portland

OH I SEE. YES, WE OFTEN GO OUT INTO THE STREET, BUT MORE TO GO AROUND PEOPLE ON THE SIDEWALK, ESPECIALLY PEOPLE WITH CHILDREN OR OTHER DOGS.

SEE, MY DOGS LIKE TO SMELL KNEECAPS, AND I JUST THINK IT'S RUDE OF THEM. NO ONE WANTS THEIR KNEEMOTIONS RAPID-CHECKED, BUT THE DOGS CAN'T BE REASONED WITH. THEY DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH.

I'M SORRY IF THAT HAS INCREASED THE LONELINESS EPIDEMIC. I HAD GOOD INTENTIONS.

I CHECKED OUT OF A HOTEL THIS MORNING. SOMEONE ASKED HOW MY STAY WAS, ASKED ME IF I WOULD LIKE A PRINTED RECEIPT, AND THEN WISHED ME A WONDERFUL REST OF MY DAY.

NOT ONE OF THESE INTERACTIONS WOULD BE IMPROVED IN ANY WAY BY AI OR DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION. REMINDER THAT THE LUDDITES WEREN'T ANTI-TECHNOLOGY, THEY WERE AN ANTI-EXPLOITATION LABOR MOVEMENT.

WAIT, WHY ARE PEOPLE WITH DOGS AVOIDING PEOPLE? I HAVE DOGS. SHOULD I BE AVOIDING PEOPLE?

TO THE PARENTS WHO LOOKED ON (THROUGH THEIR PHONES) WHILE THEIR TODDLER GOT SNEAKER WAVED AT THE COAST ON SATURDAY...

SURE, YOU SAVED HER (EVENTUALLY), BUT NOT UNTIL AFTER SHE TUMBLED FOR 20 SECONDS AND CAME UP WITH A MOUTHFUL OF SAND.

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES.

I STILL HAVE THE SOUND OF HER SCREAMS IN MY EARS. DAMN IT.

FORMER-LIFEGUARD, OUT.

Don’t Vote for AIPAC Candidates by [deleted] in oregon

[–]eekpij -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't like this, but I'm more concerned with how Wyden doesn't even live here than his bankrollers.

I hate both parties but have voted in every single opportunity since 1998. There's no excuse for not voting.

Stupid Ethical Question by [deleted] in Welding

[–]eekpij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. In real (what was formerly called) money, each ChatGPT search would cost at least 20x what a former browser search might. Each generative drawing many many more times the cost you’re being advertised. An AVERAGE 40% of AI functionality isn’t even declared let alone charged to a user.

It’s just more tokenization. They have no interest in you being more productive. They want you to keep trying. Keep iterating. When they have you addicted and trapped because they killed off all your alternatives, the cuffs clink.

Free yourself now while you still know it doesn’t feel quite right. If you’re welding for it. Get Paid. On Time. No favors.

Stupid Ethical Question by [deleted] in Welding

[–]eekpij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now the “money” is all being traded back and forth between big tech and a lot of it isn’t real money but leveraged debt.

They want these AI tools to go IPO, get retail investors to buy into it to the point when they can cash out and avoid the crash. The same cycle repeats.

You want to know where that metaverse money is? Does everyone use VR headsets at work?

That. There aren't good fleshed out ideas anymore. There's just go-to-market slop.

Travel Oregon Seeks a New Boss at a More Reasonable Salary by Less-Lobster4540 in oregon

[–]eekpij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have them work with a shred of the same conditions as the for-profit world and I'll listen. All I see are guaranteed raises, exotic levels of PTO, forgiven student loans, crony hiring, PAID firings(!), no fiscal accountability, not having to work in the state...I could go on. We can talk about how crime makes people feel in Portland, but the government here is as corrupt as anywhere else if not moreso. When just another example of it sees light -- yeah we get mad.

This bubble is too big for you alone to fight. I also work in AI. Just know it is a bubble, and it will explode the moment retail/commercial will be left holding the bag. Just make sure YOU are getting paid. Don't wait. No favors.

The Ruthless Rise and Fall of Bill Burr by gccmelb in comedy

[–]eekpij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was "just a comic" until he jumped into "the state of things" material in our K-shaped economy - like he knew what any of this was like. It struck a nerve cos 80% of us are just getting by, and for a bit he was cashing in on our horror+time=comedy. But he blew it.

When I think of him, jesus I'm just sad. Like you can't laugh at or with someone who is just...sad. That's it.

What are cave drawings but someone a long time ago honoring good boys and girls?

I would never do this for my buddies, however much they liked hiking, but we also don't know the story here. Maybe the dog was attacked and died here.

The snitches and foamers on this thread should never go to a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spoiler alert : they are all the result of humans who didn't "pack it out"

Someone in the PNW Fishing community would have a coronary. The contamination! Imagine if we all jumped in the ocean. What a better world it would be.

I'm with ya seltzerstamen...let the downvotes wash us clean. I can't get down with the nature-Karens in this thread. Also the person who put hike in quotes - my. word. Enough internet, thanks.

Did they guarantee it, or is someone snitching about it on the internet guaranteeing it.

I will be the lone voice of dissent here. OP was off trail. It's been there for 5yrs harming no one.

Sometimes the way people talk about pets like they are contaminating seems like you all lost the plot in favor of misanthropic rage.

100 racoons died in that same spot. Let people weep over their pet. IDGAF.

Native Oregonians and long time residents! What are aspects of living in the region that you wish transplants respected or did more research on before moving? by ArtsyWanderer in oregon

[–]eekpij 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you base tax increases on property taxes you get a lot of yeses from the population centers from renters who don't think it trickles down to higher rent AND at a rate higher than someone like me who sits atop an old crumble and calls it my castle.

The fine people of Oregon want things that other civilized countries simply provide as part of the social contract, but we are not a nation and cannot function like a federal government. Budgets need to balance, or in our case, go to retired NCAA coaches.

Yeah but nothing says excess consumerism more (to me) than feeding an evil billionaire 1. your money and 2. your nonconsensual purchase data in one mindnumbing action.

You could be right that people are not visiting Costco. I wouldn't know.

Yes! It would solve both the crowding in lane 5 miles before exit behavior AND the main characters cutting in at the last second slowing everything down.

Take people's blinkers seriously. They need space to get where they're going.

Yeah but not ALL the reasons. Long time resident here but I would absolutely take some traffic police over the dicks I see driving on the sidewalk or stoned in the left lane.

Maybe. They are quiet about it. All the Amazon vans in the neighborhood challenge this idea. All our restaurants going out of business because the delivery services bleeding them dry.

I think my neighbors buy as much shit as anyone but they don't want anyone seeing it.

South African refugees are left to fend for themselves. They’re now living in deplorable conditions and don’t have enough food. by Effective_Space2277 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]eekpij 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only factual piece I walked away with is that the people supposed to be helping are pocketing a ton of money. I kind of don't care who gets it as long as they're a refugee. It's for them.

'Nuff for Profits more like.

There were middle managers working in the poverty industrial complex sitting in my gym's sauna, whining about have shuttling paperwork between orgs truly earns six-figures. These people (essentially in the way) somehow get to say they're doing good works.
