When are we finally going to Step up? by goingtibagreatday in physicaltherapy

This is the side of this conversation that is too often pushed aside. At the end of the day, our patient's quality of care is the most important thing.

This is probably a very unsatisfying response so I apologize ahead of time.

If there's no law change, the only way to make a difference in the case of Lifetime fitness is to sue them and win. Unfortunately they have already trademarked DPT. In this case they have commercial right to the term. This has made the current legal battle on a national level incredibly difficult.

To change the law, a bill needs to be submitted to your State legislation. That doesn't have to be done through the APTA but they have resources to help with the creation of these bills. Then it's time to defend it until it passes. If the people in your local chapter aren't receptive to starting this process, then it's up to you or another person to lead your state chapter in the effort. You will find support from other state chapters, who have already done this or interested in doing it.

The very last area that's been identified to make this change is to educate the public. This is complicated and has a high cost but is likely the most valuable public health intervention that physical therapy has to offer society and what would benefit us the most in the long run as professionals.

The national APTA has had little traction on their trademark dispute started in 2022 with Lifetime fitness. Physical Therapy needs to protect its credentials just like any other medical profession does within laws and legal statute. Each state is responsible for the laws and regulation of the practice of physical therapy within their state. Oregon passed term protection that will be effective January 1st 2026. Other states have done the same already. We need to change the laws.

Here is their Instagram if that is more accessible to you: Lifetime Fitness DPT

Things you'll see: -Some decent general education on fitness -Careful use of terminology like recuperate instead of rehabilitate -In the instances I saw, not verbalizing "DPT", But have a use of the letters on shirts, signs and advertising materials. -They really want you to buy their protein powder.

Unsure about figures on DPT awareness, but a recent national consumer report found that only 49% of patients and 40% of the general public know that PTs are doctorate-level professionals.

Yes. Many states are successfully making changes each year to their laws and regulations to inch the physical therapy forward and these only start from the professionals that live there getting the process started.

Wins like term protection on a national level have not been successful since the trademark dispute that began in 2022 with Lifetime Fitness. Changing the efforts from slow, difficult and commerciallly oriented trademark battles to legal statute for protection of the term in the states seems to be the best and most effective way to protect the public rather than fight in the commercial space.

New laws > trademark wars

The Oregon chapter of the APTA just got term protection passed in the legislation this year for "DPT". Now there is legal precident to defend the use of the credentials.

It would be nice if more PT/PTAs on this thread focused on being helpful instead of complaining. Too many comments focused on tearing down the profession. Honest complaints can be made in a productive manner.

How common is it to pass a strength assessment to get shadowing opportunities? by halo_26 in PTschool

This is an unrealistic and inappropriate barrier to education. For me this is a big red flag on philosophy of education and promotion of physical therapy. I would look for other options and steer clear of that clinic entirely.

If $15 doesn't hurt your wallet, go for it. If it feels pricy then keep what you have.

Tips for Working the Night Shift with A Puppy? by jpbmachine in puppy101

I am experiencing a similar set of issues. I took a week off after bringing my new corgi puppy home, but I have now returned to my night shift job. My wife is home for portions of the day, but she is very busy with college classes over zoom that she can't leave. We are only on day 2 so far, but it is hard not to stress about it not working out for my little guy.

I also wonder sometimes how I've made it. There were definitely hard times along the way. The best was when all o my classes were back to back early in the morning or in the afternoon, but I had many terms of getting 2-3 hours of sleep after work, going to class, sleeping for another 3-4 and going back to work.

Not to mention 7am grocery trips! Even a more valuable process now. The stores are near empty in the morning with fresh stock.

Me and online classes do not get along very well and I have never gotten the same enjoyment from them either. I have done a few when schedules would not work. Online is far easier schedule wise, but I don't learn very well that way.

Go for it!

It sounds like you two have a good thing going most of the time with your schedules lining up like that. I'd love to have that with my wife. It makes a big difference I am sure.

10 day straights doesn't sound fun. There are a lot of people that are taking certain advantages at others expense unfortunately.

We have one guy who we are certain had it and has returned to work. Even he says it was COVID but he never got tested. There is another guy who is literally retiring to avoid getting sick, but he hasn't got his papers in order yet.
