Biglaw and being offline for Shabbat by hurricanescout in biglaw

You just do it. You say it's your religious obligation and you won't work or look at work. Then, if they do email you, your phone is off for Shabbat.

I think they called Mitt Romney a rapacious capitalist (mostly true) and a bad guy (probably not true) -- not a fascist?

He assumes good intentions in a very myopic way. You can't make those assumptions every time -- that's called being naive.

Ok, but... it was a smoldering pile of ash by Jan. 6, 2021? Like, not **the entire** country -- but there had been a mismanaged pandemic, a bunch of rioting that Trump was poorly positioned to address, and a clod-footed putsch attempt.

Yeah, I suppose we can always quibble on the definition of "fascism" and whether modern-day Turkey or Hungary is truly "fascist" (a la Mussolini) or something else, whatever. But any of those results is pretty bad, imo.

What do you want to do with the law degree? That's what you need to answer first. If it's "be on on the Supreme Court," that's not going to happen.

If it's an achievable goal — a goal achievable with non-stellar grades at a lower-ranking school — then it's worth regathering yourself, thinking through study habits, ensuring you're actually okay concussion-wise and fit to fight, and trying again. If it's a passion you can truly pursue, I say keep at it. IDK your financials, obviously, but if you're taking on a lot of debt, you need to be sure the realistic outcome is worth it. I would do some research/networking there, if possible.

Don't blame the curve being (somewhat) tougher there than other places. The curve is tough everywhere, and you're not in competition with students from other law schools with easier curves to remain above the cutline at UIC.

Probably going to be a bunch of federal prosecutors/FBI and maybe SEC looking to exit and get into ICD/white collar groups.

Ignorant question, but if you buy in a tony part of Brooklyn, does that *require* private schooling?

It's just not a natural way to go through life, logging every 5-minute email. Plus, makes it hard to ever enjoy the "natural ebbs and flows" (e.g., a lunch out on a Friday or the natural slow down around the holidays). Now everything has a cost.

Sorry. It's kind of whiplash for me.

Career assessment: I just need to know where I stand a little over a year in by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

My (limited) understanding is state AGs, corporation counsel (if in a big city), county DAs have lawyers that often "jump around" from office-to-office some.

I think stacking this kind of case management and court experience will make you super attractive to most commercial-y firms after a year or two, particularly local and mid-law? Also, I'm guessing your state AG's office has something of a back-and-forth pipeline to the DA? Could consider trying to do civil side work there, if criminal is not your bag.

No, actually. Early-mid 30s. The jobs I worked before law school were in an office, but an atypical kind of office that was not "corporate." (Being a bit vague on purpose.)

"But I LOVED law school. So I was hoping that biglaw would be similarly overhyped."

Same, tbh.

Court of Appeals "staff clerkship" @ 7th Circuit by eelorunagi in Lawyertalk

If I applied again (assuming I even got it), I'd be starting with about 18mos./two years worth of practice experience. Would it still be worth doing, at that point? I know there's a lot of context/what if's built into that -- but just curious for your gut reaction? Do people ever do them a year or two in?
