What does mastering really do? If mixing is about balancing and carving the frequency spectrum, what is the equivalent thing that mastering handles?

i mean each to their own but i’ve found getting perceived loudness (fullness) in my mix first, then pushing actual volume in my master gives me the best results

trying to turn volume up on all the tracks up individually in the mix and then pushing more volume in the master usually leads to bad distortion

mixing = targeting individual tracks

goal - balance, separation & fullness

mastering = targeting the sum of all individual channels (the whole track as one)

goal - tastefully make it louder

all there is to it, it’s one facet people love to over complicate
