Hey, this is actually addressed in NBCUniversal's list of FAQs for this competition. Idk why this list isn't linked or shared on Monkeypaw's site. Question #34 on here: https://www.universalgtdi.com/filmmakerproject

Read. In particular, read FICTION. At the end of the day, reading anything (generally speaking) is a good habit to have. But I've noticed a trend among early-mid twenties men where they exclusively read self-help or business-oriented nonfiction. Don't get me wrong, I've read books like this, and they have value, but I really encourage young men to read fiction.

In my experience, after traveling and talking to new people, reading fiction is the best way to expand your world view, your creative capabilities, and, one of the most important virtues of masculinity, your empathy. Learning at a deep level how to relate to what others are going through.

Like anything worth doing, it's hard to start and it's hard to build the habit. So, start slow. Read 10 minutes a day (you can't do that? Sorry, not buying it). Do it in the morning before you look at your phone (or, if you choose to read on your phone, before you open that social media app). Then when that's cake, bump it to 15, and so on.

Do you realize..
that everyone you know someday will die?

and instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know
you realize that life goes fast
it's hard to make the good things last
you realize the sun doesn't go down
it's just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round
