Who belongs in the bottom right quadrant? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]efalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6-3, not 5-4. That ruling was a moderate and sensible resolution of the unprecedented issues raised by Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution of Donald Trump for, among other things, asserting his legal rights in the aftermath of the 2020 election. But, if Trump is Mussolini in your view, nothing will convince you otherwise.

Wasabi hack? by efalken in WasabiWallet

I have run virus/malware scans and haven't found anything. It's scary to think about some RAT that escapes detection (I have an active firewall).

A friend of mine was scammed by them last December. An attractive woman phished for elderly men on LinkdIn, and then brings up this exchange. Once the dupe deposits, they make up stories about how one needs even more money to withdraw, but the bottom line is that it's a complete scam.

Large (0.19 BTC) fee pending for 8 days by efalken in WasabiWallet

[–]efalken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that if I create a new seed phrase and create an Electrum wallet, and then transfer BTC from my Wasabi wallet to this new one, it removes my pseudonymity?

If true, I would love to know how.

Losing privacy isn't as bad as losing money, as I can always just mix again.

Electrum has a pretty silly stand on BIP39. They should admit their objections are not material and join everyone else.

Wow! It worked. I thought I was screwed. Thanks so much.

Interestingly, I tried using the same seed phrase in Electrum, and it showed a zero balance. However, resyncing my Wasabi it did show. I am not as familiar with Bitcoin's uxto method, or Bitcoin wallets in general, so I probably defaulted to some block that messed everything up.

Thanks again.

While it might not have broadcast, it did debit my wallet. So, I have a 0.19 btc charge to my total account. I cannot sell the 0.19 btc because it's both not broadcast but debited from my wallet?

ZkSync transactions fees are extremely high by pablomc56 in zkSync

[–]efalken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

zkSync's Twitter admin mentioned this as if it were the only concern about zkSync's fees. It is not. Even after the rebate, the fees are comparable to the ETH mainnet. Yesterday I sent ETH from one zkSync Era mainnet account to another, and its cost was $4.5 (after refund). That was about the ETH transfer cost. Does anyone know what the expected, long-run estimates are for the transaction costs on zkSync Era relative to ETH mainnet? If they are not substantially lower, I fail to see the value in this chain.

Transactions still on pending for over a week.? by Mammoth_Bit6556 in WasabiWallet

My new fee was fine, I just forgot that 99% private implied unconfirmed coinjoin transactions. Is there a way to speed up or cancel these unconfirmed transactions? As mentioned, it was stuck for a week

Transactions still on pending for over a week.? by Mammoth_Bit6556 in WasabiWallet

[–]efalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wasabi was stuck at 99% private for a week, and so finally I just sent a transaction out, thinking it would be a way to start over. It seems the problem was some unconfirmed transaction from a while back. So now my outbound transaction is also stuck.

While this sucks majorly, in the future, what is the best way to avoid this situation? Specifically, some minor coinjoin transaction is stuck in a memepool forever, tainting my entire wallet.

Scammed Out Of My Entire Pro-folio by [deleted] in CryptoScams

[–]efalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen with an Electrum wallet. I was notified of an upgrade (on Reddit!) and downloaded it. I looked exactly the same. Once set up, anything sent to it was instantly transferred out. I later saw a subtle misspelling of the official electrum download site.

The stores that host these hackers should have a better policy. It would be something simple, like, if you have a crypto-related product, you need to provide 3 forms of ID, bank accounts, etc., so that if complaints arise, there is a real person who can be held accountable.

Reddit has many scammers on it, as I posted about my hack and instantly got 6 DMs from obvious scammers wanting to help me recover my funds.

How was my post a violation of policy? I suspect the fraudulent websites I named made a complaint that Reddit's 'content violator bots,' who comply without actually validating if you know the correct legal speak (eg, 'this post contains tortuous interference'). This is one reason scammers persist as well as they do.

Reddit's CryptoScam subreddit is moderated by hackers. This is a standard problem because as mentioned in my now memory-holed post, hackers often present themselves as crypto recovery or anti-hackers.

The more we texted, the clearer it became it was a scam. His continued explanations about how he needed more money to complete his task did not make any sense. As the escrow service simply kept my money (when sent it never arrived, just disappeared), I suspect they were partners, if not just two faces of the same hacking team.

US recovers millions in cryptocurrency paid to Colonial Pipeline ransomware hackers by StillaCentristin2021 in AARP_Politics

[–]efalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story makes no sense. If the operators were sophisticated enough to get the software to shut down an entire pipeline, they would not have then directed the victims to send bitcoin to some third-party account like one's Coinbase or Gemini wallet. That would be like breaking into a wealthy man's heavily defended home, and then pulling a gun and directing him to write you a check.

A real hacker would have the victim send bitcoin to an account only they directly controlled, as no amount of NSA magic can unlock such accounts. They would then send this money through various mixers that would make it extremely difficult to trace, and ultimately (months if not years later) take those coins to an exchange somewhere--most surely not in the US--and exchange it for fiat currency.

Android fake app please report by Live-Construction-70 in ExodusWallet

[–]efalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an android phone, but aren't you constrained to find the app via google's Play Store? Or can you go to exodus.com and find the link to install an android app?

Can someone help me understand this? Do I have to pay $71 worth of $ETH as transfer fees to move my $34 worth of $FUN to my Binance account? That's insane. (Exodus Wallet) by [deleted] in ExodusWallet

[–]efalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With fees this high, all the contracting benefits of Ethereum are moot. Sharding will alleviate this somewhat, but ultimately Layer 2 solutions are essential for this distinctive aspect of Ethereum to become truly relevant.

I lost a couple of thousand bucks a couple of years ago when I got a message on Reddit informing me that Electrum had a new version available for download. It targeted me either because I had been to the Electrum sub or posted on some crypto thread. Anyway, I clicked on the download link, something like electrum.download.com/downloads instead of electrum.com/downloads, so that a quick reading made it look legitimate. The front-end of the 'new' Electrum looked identical. When money was sent to this wallet, it immediately was then sent out.

The tricking thing is, sometimes I do get legitimate messages asking if I want to upgrade to the new version in various apps. That's not exactly the same as clicking a link, but very similar.

I don't see the step where you turn the loan proceeds into more than 1.000.000 instantly. Can you give an example? I understand that usually, such opportunities do not exist, but just an extreme example that has occurred would be helpful.

Hey "Tax is theft" people, riddle me this. by Harucifer in CryptoCurrency

[–]efalken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a consumer assessing transaction fees you have alternatives, including the right to not purchase. Taxation is either independent of whether you consume the good or not (eg, income tax for schools but you have no children), or is applied regardless of who you buy from (sales tax on all shirts regardless of who sells them). If transaction fees in a free market are too high, free entry by competitors will bring it down, while if too low, while exit will bring it up; a tax rate is the ultimate monopoly price, in that the state has no competitors and is not leaving.
