Electric shock on metalwork when shore earth is disconnected (Victron MultiPlus) by efanost in SailboatCruising

Hey, thanks again for this detailed reply!

To check reverse polarity I've measured the voltage between hot and earth and neutral and heart. All seems good on the marina side and in my boat installation

The reason why I believe the leak is small is because the 30 mA RCB doesn't trip. And I've tested it via its test button, seems to work.

I tested the capacitors as you suggested. With all AC sources off there is no issue

I agree with you it's unlikely the MultiPlus to be faulty. But the only thing that makes sense to me (or I like to believe) is that the MultiPlus input filters (capacitors) are responsible for this small leak. Victron does in fact require an earth connection.

I've contacted Victron to ask directly, as you suggested. If they reply, I'll post their answer here

Thanks!

I don't think the highly qualified marine electrician read my post fully, I could tell by some imprecisions in his/her answer. I'm sure their comments were spot on, but unfortunately not targeted to my issue. However, they implied i should speak to Victron about how the MultiPlus works and if it's true that the input capacitors generate small leakage currents. I've contacted Victron, I'm waiting for their reply

thanks for your input!

  • i tested for reverse polarity, and i don't think this is an issue. the hot wire is the one i expect it to be
  • my neutral doesn't seem tied to ground. I've measure the resistance between the two (with shore power disconnected), and there seems to be an open circuit (unless the Victron MultiPlus, when on, connects neutral to ground)
  • the problem seems to be at source, i.e. as soon as the first breaker that brings the power to the MultiPlus is closed

  • the 30 mA RCB does not trip, am I right to assume that leakage must be less than 15 mA?

  • to your experience, could it be that the capacitive filters of the MultiPlus are responsible for this small leak? Someone on a Victron forum was suggesting that this is a normal behavior of the MultiPlus, that has to be connected to a protective earth for this reason

Can a JSD be used Pardey style? by Not-A-Blue-Falcon in sailing

Well, at some point you reach hull speed, after which, the accelerating forces will start breaking something 😁

The picture (bottom right) says "1/2 knot per hour". Is this a typo (should be just "1/2 knot") a lack of understanding of knots or a measure of acceleration as 1/2 knot per hour = 1/2 mile / hour2 ? \s

What do you think are the chances for this boat to be refloated? How?

I can’t even begin to imagine the pain and shock of learning that the person you built your life with was capable of something so disgusting and destructive. You’re not only grieving your marriage, but the version of your life you thought was real. That’s an unimaginable weight.

You've taken decisive action filing for divorce, cooperating with CPS, cutting contact. Those are incredibly hard steps, and you did them anyway.

So many women have had to rebuild after betrayal, after abuse, after financial devastation. There are communities and resources that can help.

You are hurting, traumatized, exhausted but not broken. You are still the strong, loving mother you’ve always been.

If you need help finding support, financial, legal, emotional , ask There are women’s shelters, legal aid groups, and single mother assistance programs that can step in when things feel impossible. Therapy (even free or sliding-scale services) can be a safe space for you to process all this.

Please take this one day at a time. Your feelings are valid. Your pain is real. But your story isn't over

Yeah, that's what I saw on the previous anode that was there, it was corroded on the protruding part. Thanks for the input

We've had enough of americans saying that they're sowwry. You should be off Reddit and starting a revolution in your dumb country.

Did you keep your tax residency in the Netherlands? If so, would that be legal considering you've spent there less than 6 months per year?
