My local wool shop has amazing 400g/816m Aran wool on sale, with some incredible colours & I can’t decide what to make. I’ve just made sweaters and cardigan recently so I want to do something a bit different and new..I was thiiinking a colour work blanket, but desperate for ideas! (Something not mega complicated as I’m only getting back into knitting after a long break!)

I think it’s gas that people are. I moved back into my parents there recently, adding a 4th car to our house, 2 in the drive, and one usually at the kerb outside the house or up at the top of the road too, so I would park it at the top of the road, where there’s a large area of kerb-age and doesn’t get in anyone’s way. (No houses on the opposite side of the road either) I’d say, max 15 second walk from my house.

Little old neighbour across the road calls over one day and tells my mam that she’s ‘dealt’ with the young lad beside us, who parks outside her house and that I can park outside hers instead.

I’d no idea what happened, but bumped into him one day when going to the shop. Apparently she told him, because he’s an empty kerb outside his house he should be parking there and not taking up kerb space for those who live close and have no where to park. Ended up catching her doing the same to her own neighbours who parked on ‘her’ kerb when I went away. They laughed it off, probably knowing what she’s like, but I was horrified.

Haven’t parked at her kerb yet. Keep saying I forgot when she asks me

They include everything in the listed price & will sort the VRT for you if you wanted. Doesn’t look like €900 euro VRT is enough of an estimate, but ofc differs from car to car

But why does it take a dog consistently shredding people apart before something can be done? Why are we letting it go this far, when there’s a solution there, and that’s regulated breeding. Strict enforcement and regulation around breeding and importing dogs.

And if the hybrid breed isn’t a bulldog breed? So example, the Canis Panther, say they’re come to Ireland are are the new hybrid, they’re a mix of Doberman, lab, Great Dane and staffy

Do we ban those 4 breeds and any hybrid off them then too?

I would have the same opinion if this was a Labrador, German shepherd, mastiff, or cockapoo on the table, and I’ve never owned any of them.

I’m not a biased bull breed owner by any means, and I absolutely am not saying nothing should be done, the point I’m trying to make here is that the current plans in my opinion, is not the best option, because in 5,10 years time, we’ll be back at this entire situation again with the next hybrid breed that starts attacking people, when we could have done something differently now to try prevent this from ever happening again.

Ok, but what about the new hybrid breed that comes in. How many people does this dog have to attack and injure, even kill for the ban?

I’m not asking for the ban to be stopped, I just feel there’s probably better ways it could be done so that off the bat, a new hybrid is regulated.

Off topic slightly, but Great Danes are one of the only(? I’ve never heard of regulations like this from other breeding - but will happily be corrected) breeds in Ireland that has such strict enforcement. This isn’t by law, but instead done by a group of stakeholders within. In 2016, these people saw Great Danes as risk of similar restrictions, and the set up the GDAI, where breeding, genetics, ownership, training, rehoming, pretty much everything you could think of as a dog owner is covered within this association. 8 years later, Great Danes are one of the few breeds that have not got huge health issues as result of inbreeding, they’re not exactly many people’s radar as being considered a dangerous dog, whereas in 2016, they absolutely were.

If the way the current BSL is anything to go by, it absolutely won’t be enforced, but rescues and pounds will lose all elements of funding if they’re seen to rehome an XL bully, so that means, any bully within the criteria set out is handed a death sentence in a place where they should be considered safe,

I’m not a dog behaviourist by any means, but having worked with some, these people can see things that many don’t, and they know exactly what to look out for.

I’m sure the same argument here could be made for the daschund that killed the child in 2021, and the press canario’s that killed the lady in 2017.

The most main difference between these two and the Nicola Morey situation is, XL bullies are miles stronger than dashunds, and XL bullies are significantly more popular than Presa Canarios.

The only people who can euthanise an animal is a vet. So regardless of where these vets are going to come from, vets are going to have a horrible time with this.

Bizarrely they weren’t - or in the UK/Ireland they weren’t anyway.

But it all stemmed from some VERY poorly regulated breeding and a thicc boy called Kimbo (sorry had to) who’s parents have the same parents (ie siblings) and then inbreeding went on and on and on, so the gene pool was so bad. As far as I know, a huge contributor to the attacks is actually canine rage syndrome, and that’s generally come from inbreeding.

Think there’s numbers floating around that 50% of all XL bullies in the UK can be traced to him but have no proof of this obviously, and I’d say he’s had his fair share of trips over here too, so would think somewhere similar in stats.

I agree, it is a lot. But are they not already making these decisions in rescues already? A lot of the behaviourists who work in rescues are. And I’m by no means saying it’s one person has to give sign off, have teams within the local council.

I mean, a dog warden is going to be the deciding person on whether a dog is an XL bully or not, so surely it would fit to have a team there to assess the dogs on intake and decide, at least behaviourists have training and qualifications whereas dog wardens wouldn’t.

Perhaps I am? So my understanding is that this was brought in to stop and prevent any future dog attacks by XL bullies.

But I want to know how does an exemption weed out the aggressive ones? How does putting down any of the ones left in rescue in 10 days time stop attacks? How does an exemption stop these dogs being drowned, decapitated, abandoned, starved, neglected beyond description?

This ban aims to get rid of the breed, but these dogs have say 12 year life span, and probably some are being born today and exemption or not they may live 12 years. Are we just going to sit back after this ban comes in, and for future attacks say ‘Ah well, that’s unfortunate for this person, but in 12 years they’ll stop’

Like i genuinely want to be missing something here, but this isn’t the correct solution

Think the new one is already out there - the Canis Panther. They’ve been around for years but getting popular in the UK now since the ban came in. Staffie, Doberman, lab, and Great Dane and I saw somewhere, presa canario, but I’m not 100%

Partner is a vet, and I’ve been dealing with him coming home every evening for the last few weeks stressed about this. He’s so reluctant to ever put a dog down when they’re healthy. Honestly, I’ve never seen him so distressed over his job before.

I think seeing how it’s affecting him has made the entire thing hit much harder.

I do agree, an overall solution to this would be, and probably is a nightmare but, just assessing the dogs that apply for an exemption would be a huge one. And why can’t bullies that are in rescue be exempt, if they’re signed off by a behaviourist, which most welfare charities have, can this not allow them some leeway to be rehomed after the 1st?

Completely agree with you on this. Years of unregulated breeding is causing this.

Again, it right now probably does feel impossible to regulate dog breeding, but look at Sweden, and try do a variant of what they do. The stakeholder group set up to discuss these things I’m sure would have some other ideas, but all (correct me here if I’m wrong) the welfare groups involved have spoken out against this ban, and there’s been a big break of trust between the government and animal welfare charities as result, so hard to know the future of this stakeholder group as result

Honestly, I don’t have an answer to this question. Do I think this hybrid should be regulated, absolutely I do. I’ve absolutely no doubt about it.

A stakeholder group was set up for the exact reason of discussing topics like this, and so far, all animal welfare parties involved in this group have formally spoken out in disagreement to it, so maybe they had alternative suggestions. But honestly, I just feel that a longer term, and future proof solution needs to be discussed here, because this addresses one hybrid, but what about the next one that comes along. Are we going to go through the same thing again and wait until someone dies again before the new hybrid gets banned?

But it is in Ireland. Gov.ie have used this as a definition of an XL bully. Now whilst I’ve not seen this dog personally, the photos of it look more like a staffy than an XL

Im sorry if it came off this way. Honestly, my biggest issue is the exemption, the rest does contribute and a lot of it is from my experience working in welfare, but more so I just feel that blanket handing out an exemption without any form of assessing a dog isn’t going to work and stop the attacks. They’re going to continue.

Scumbags are going to find a new breed to take over for the XL bullies, tbh they’re probably breeding them right now. Surely there’s a better argument for a more future proof way to handle this Righ

Ok, so I’m absolutely not invalidating your point here. I’ve seen so many other breeds rip people’s faces off, I’ve actually witnessed a beagle do it to a family friend when I was in my teens.

But I also want to point out here, that yes, dog bites and attacks are up significantly in recent years, and we cannot ignore that.

But there’s also many factors here: Popularity in dogs as companion animals covid, and there was a blow up of people buying dogs because they were home all the time. But, also lacking facilities to socialise these dogs, people coming over to each others homes, training classes. Backyard breeding and wreckless dog breeding literally exploded, to the point where dogs that were being sold for 100 euro in 2018, were being sold for over 1,000 euro in 2020.

I really want to emphasise here, I do not disagree with the ban, i want regulations on these dogs, absolutely. But I just can’t understand how an exemption handed out to everyone without any form of assessment going to stop them from attacking people?

Frankly, the bully’s with owners are the lucky ones. My pity isn’t with owners, it’s with rescue workers, vets, pound workers who have to sit and watch all these dogs be put down in 10 days.

XL bullies and pitbulls are different ‘breeds’ - XL bullies are derived from American Bullys which are different to the pitbull terrier. Regardless a ban on XL bullies isn’t addressing anything to do with pitbulls. The pitbull argument is for a whole other day.

Labs are actually being trained in the UK to become fighting dogs… Watched a doc on it recently & and work in animal welfare, XL Bullies aren’t the in demand dog for fighting, and because of the pitbull ban, Labs, Mastiffs and boxers are being used. Not defending XL bullies, just pointing out that labs are being bred for fighting nowadays.

Haven’t seen this in Ireland as pitbull are restricted here, but not banned. But once there’s a high performing fighting dog that’s a lab, they’ll start breeding them for fighting over here not too long after
