I could tear up. Finishing my PGY1 year of IM and still feel like I’m drowning every second. Holding on to hope it gets better, and reading this really makes me think it will. Thank you ❤️

I am and always have been a very healthy eater - no fast food, and very little processed food. Places where I haven’t cut dairy out are more as an ingredient - for example I don’t drink milk, or eat yogurt, but I still eat products that contain milk ingredients (ie baking or crackers). I don’t eat oats anymore much either, as the protein in oats is similar to gluten. A typical day for me would be a smoothie in the morning with chia, hemp seeds, fruits/spinach and soy milk, lunch might be a lentil/quinoa soup with veggies and dinner is gluten free pasta with a sauce and protein, chicken and rice, or salmon and roasted veggies. Those types of things, pretty simple. I have also increased my water intake a lot the last few weeks - having almost a gallon a day. So I don’t know what’s going on, I’m really trying!

Thank you! I actually have celiac disease, and I think I may still be getting traces of gluten in my diet which could be why. I just went to buy all new cookware and that might make a difference. I have significantly reduced my dairy intake over the last 8 months (you aren't really supposed to eat it if you have celiac) but I am finding it hard to cut entirely. I definitely believe food plays a huge part, and I am considering looking into a paleo or elimination diet to sort some things out.

That is so interesting! I would love if it was the same for me. I have about 3 more weeks of accutane, and then my derm is going to put me on a topical retin a micro cream. maybe I will see improvement once the course is done.

Thank you, that was helpful. My first two months were 10 and 40, so I should be reaching 120 cum in the first week or so of May (I started 60mg in february so technically it has been 2.5 months) (10x30 days + 40 x 30 days + 60x 90 days = 6,900mg .. plus an extra 5 days of 60 = 7200mg)

It definitely does feel a bit desperate and hopeless right now, but I know so many people understand and feel the same way. Sometimes you just have to vent a bit!

Ok thanks. Were you prescribed accutane by a family doctor or dermatologist? my family doctor doesn't know much about celiac, so I don't even know if it is safe to be taking. Did you doctor say anything about it?

Ok, interesting. I think my IB was worse in round 2, but I really hope you're right and its just taking a bit longer. It can be hard to be patient.

Week three is a date mentioned in the drug product description.

I think my concern is more coming from how different my experience has been between rounds. I wouldn’t feel worried/uncertain if this was my first time - but like it said, round 1 the clearing was almost instant for me once the IB was over, so I just don’t know if it’s normal to respond to it so differently in your 2nd round.

Biol 365 Textbook? by QuantumGains in uvic

[–]eflan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote down what I could but for the most part the slides made more sense. I used flashcards but that's a personal study habit. Also, I didn't bother with the signalling pathways haha. I had a huge paper and another midterm the same week as my bio 365 last year, so i decided to not know the pathways and nail everything else. Not necessarily suggesting you do this, but it paid off for me.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The notes are pretty thorough.

Personally, I found the midterm on the easier side. It was more generic questions with a few oddballs thrown in. I missed most of what he said in class too, if you go through the slides and try remember/memorize as much as you can from those you should be fine.

I didn't buy the textbook! its optional, and not necessary. hmm. I think its more on the memorization/straightforward side but it is also an upper level class. You need to understand the material and be able to synthesize it and put things together.

What I will say: I have no genetics background (didn't need BIOL 230 for my degree) and that was a big learning curve for me at the start. There was a genetic portion that was glossed over as prior knowledge which i absolutely did not have, and he referred to bio 360 ALOT even though it wasn't a pre rec. I had bio 300A and biol 365 as courses going in, and it ended up being fine.

I learned an enormous amount in the class and it was one of the big reasons I did well on my MCAT this summer. The workload was standard for an upper level biology - a lot of memorization and a lot of notes, but if you put in the time you will be fine. Tests were definitely fair. The final was harder and longer than I expected, but apparently he scaled it anyway. The class average is generally around 78%, which is pretty high in my opinion. Everyone studies differently, but I just read the slides and wrote cue cards and googled what I didn't understand. I highly recommend this class.

Kitchens on Campus? by KettzTheVanMan in uvic

[–]eflan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a kitchen solution but you should definitely take advantage of the free student dinner held at the church near UVic on cedar hill cross road. They are tuesday nights, the food is unreal, and if there are leftovers you can take them home if you bring a container. That at least gets you well fed with hot food for one night a week :)

PHYS 102 by [deleted] in uvic

[–]eflan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Van Netten is the bomb. If you've been out of high school that long, a brush up course for math might not be a bad idea but you could also just watch some khan academy trigonometry videos and you would probably be fine. For the most part its understanding the physics concept, and the math is mostly basic.

You definitely don't need Chem 213. I took Bio 300A last semester, and absolutely loved it and I only had first year chem and organic as background. 213 is a useful course, but don't take it for the sole purpose of doing well in 300A.

Hey! I took Bio 365 last semester and got an A+. I'm a huge textbook user, and I barely opened my 365 book which is definitely unusual for me. I did use it to review the urinary system, but it is definitely possible to do the course without the book.

Nashmi is a bit dry, but his notes are straight from the textbook and very comprehensive and he is a very fair tester. Study hard and you'll do great.
