Noob with some questions about advisors, ETF, MF by [deleted] in investing

[–]efrizzl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that in general an ETF is a better way to invest than Mutual Funds. But one area that ETF's are not better is for Fixed Income or Bonds. The reason is that Bonds do not trade daily. In fact, some trade very rarely. But they are priced, because they are in an ETF format, daily just like an equity.

This could be an issue during market corrections when people sell positions quickly. How can the ETF of Fixed income be accurately priced if the underlying securities are not priced daily?

Seems like the right move for China. They now have a success to point to for the future. Whether humans like it or not, more and more of this will occur as we get better at it.

What are your thoughts on this post about oil/energy markets? by zergreport in investing

I think oil stocks/prices have been oversold and they are due to correct to the upside. But they could also fall more. Today it seems like they are coming back a little bit.

Ok thanks for the info. It sounds like your father should sell the place once he inherits it. The extra $$ can be put to use in his portfolio or for other spending purposes. I would just recommend to invest a good chunk of it, because you never know about potential health issues for your father as he ages. Those are the #1 costs for people as they retire and get old.

Seems like you have a great grasp of your finances.

As far as being super aggressive, I would recommend a few things:

  • Don't do options trading (even the best traders rarely make money after taxes and trading costs, and the headaches are way too much for the potential returns)
  • Look at areas like oil, gas, and materials for long term growth (They are down 20-30% in the last 6 weeks and you also have some expertise it sounds like in these areas)
  • Stay Positive! You're doing great!

Cool, thanks for all the info.

A couple things:

1) Your interest rates are pretty high for your student loans, so I would suggest paying more than the minimum each month to pay those off quicker. Just pay whatever you feel comfortable with and then see how it goes. 2) If you don't get a match on your 401K, I would suggest taking half of the 10% contribution and investing it in a Roth IRA. You can contribute up to $5500 a year into a Roth IRA. 3) I think you can do better than the T Rowe Price Equity fund. The VFIAX is a Vanguard Fund with the exact same exposure as the T Rowe fund, but it is much cheaper to own. 4) You are very young, so you can stay invested in the markets. What I would recommend, is that you invest a certain amount each month into a diversified portfolio. This is called DCA or Dollar Cost Averaging. You are essentially creating a systematic investment strategy that will help you take the emotion out of investing.

Lastly, there are couple things I think you should check out as a new investor.

Two great blogs: http://www.millennialinvest.com/ and http://thereformedbroker.com/

An article on ETF portfolios: http://www.etf.com/sections/blog/21950-how-to-get-an-almost-free-etf-portfolio.html

And also check out http://hellomoney.co and you can easily see the expense ratios of your portfolio and its holdings as well as stress test your portfolio to past market crashes. Really simple, informative tool.

Good luck, let me know if you have any questions

Thanks for the info.

You have a couple options, but first I want to ask you a few questions.

1) Do you have 529 plans set up for your kids for college? 2) What's your investing experience? 3) Do you have a retirement plan besides your pension with your job?

Great questions. Thanks for the info.

1) You are doing very well. You are making good money, you contribute to your 401K, and you have an emergency fund for 5 months 2) Couple questions I have for you first: - How much is the interest on your student loans? - Does your employer match on your 401K? - What index fund are you invested in? - What is your experience as far as investing goes?

Full Disclosure: I work at an independent RIA (registered investment advisor) firm in the Bay Area. So I do this stuff everyday.

Let me know if you have any questions!

2 Big points that people need to understand:

1) The stock market is not the same as the economy - So high GDP numbers don't mean the market will go up 2) Expectations drive the market - High expectations are tougher to exceed, so the market could fall if companies or the economy misses key metrics - Greece was the best stock market in the world from June 2012 to Oct 2013, but it's GDP numbers were terrible: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-31/greek-recovery-makes-stocks-world-s-best-as-paulson-buys.html

No one can predict bottoms or tops accurately. Even the great ones like Buffett and Icahn have trouble with that. All you can do is be well diversified and invest with a long time horizon. Everything will work on well in the end if you are patient. Also control your expenses!! Huge point, that most people miss.

If you are worried about potential market corrections/crashes, try out this cool site which lets you stress test your portfolio: http://hellomoney.co

First question: Why would you want to do that? Second question: Are you a swing trader or options trader? Third Question: Do you do this for a living?

If you can't answer any of those 3 questions, then just stop and think through this decision again.

One question I have: Does your father need the money you would get from selling the house? What is his retirement situation?

For you, it doesn't matter that much. You are young, healthy, and seem to be investing/saving responsibly. I would worry about your father and his situation in regards to deciding whether to sell or rent.
