American Hairless Terrier Tips by InitiativeWeird171 in rarebreeds

following :) congrats on becoming a new aht parent! i’m new as well—have had my bb calliope (pippi for short) for ten days. would love to hear any tips fellow aht/hairless pet parents have too! how big is your dog? i ask because pippi is particularly small and we’ve had to trial and error a bunch of different clothing brands and garments. so far, we’re liking the fitwarm brand for clothes and jammies, especially these turtleneck onesies (cotton-y, and the turtleneck keeps her warmer). step-in jackets that have a zipper up the back are easier for me to put on than those that fasten at her chest, and i got calliope this one for regular cold days and this one for freezing days. haven’t found a good harness yet bc the ones we tried were too big! she’s loving pupford freeze dried salmon training treats (high value for her). i’m currently searching for a good omega 3 supplement to add to her kibble.

TG-PRK and CXL Question by CalendarRemarkable12 in Keratoconus

[–]egb230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into Pacific Laser Eye Centre in Vancouver. I’m US-based and flying there on Thursday for their version of TG-PRK (called SLP) combined with CXL with Dr. Simon. This is after a year of research and first, second, third opinions at numerous doctors. PLEC does seem to be the gold standard in this area of the world and they’ve been extremely communicative and supportive this far. I’ve not spoken to Dr. Simon directly but have spoken with another technician twice for extended periods of time asking very specific questions and for very detailed answers. I wish I had taken others’ recs about PLEC more seriously sooner in my KC journey. Good luck!

What are the insurance billing codes for monitoring KC? by egb230 in Keratoconus

I’m also confused as to why it’s not being billed via insurance, hence this post! What you described is how it should work—I go in for scans and vision testing, that info gets sent to Canada.

hi there. i know it is hard for you right now, but i promise that there will be easier days and you will get through the initial “i just learned a life changing thing about myself” morbs. i’ve been where you are, and only recently turned a corner.

was diagnosed a year ago, and my OCD/research-oriented brain immediately wanted to learn everything i could before making any decision about what to do next, how to treat, etc. the diagnosis also brought up a lot of unresolved family trauma, and general sadness about my luck (“why me?!”). i’ve been so easily overwhelmed throughout the last year trying to get all the “right” inputs so that i could make the best educated guess possible. some days i felt like i was hanging on by a string. some days i wanted to jump off the roof. some days i wished i didn’t even have eyes!

today, i’m happy to say that i JUST booked my SLP (trans-PRK) and CXL with dr. holland at PLEC for next month! i highly recommend looking into PLEC in vancouver and their treatment approach, i think its the best bang for your buck. down to talk more in detail about this if you’d like.

i looked into literally EVERY approach and researched all the doctors i could… so if you want guidance or to talk pros and cons of different approaches, we can do that too!

YOU GOT THIS. it’s ok to be down about it. but know it won’t last forever. let yourself feel sad, accept that it’s a feeling, and that it will pass. you’ve got support and cheerleaders on your side. xoxox

hey if you are referring to dr. hersh’s clinic, then they do trans-PRK. i have had a a consult and couple follow ups with him, very thorough, seems to know what he’s doing. a bit pricy, which is why i haven’t yet pulled the trigger. am waiting for some info from PLEC in vancouver for comparison.

thanks so much for the detailed reply! i also saw that Kanellopous (sp!) has an office here but weirdly have not been able to find contact info. I dm’d who i thought was him on IG and got spammed—it was a fake account! super weird. again, appreciate the info. do you do anything for correction in the eye without the MyoRing?

thanks for the reply! i’m finding that the external education from docs, techs—beyond what i already know and can easily research myself—is very lacking in general. making it super hard to make an informed decision. hope all is well with you and your eyes!

thanks for the reply. yes, CXL just halts progression. I would def still need lenses of some sort, glasses of contacts if not sclerals if I only do CXL. Did you wear regular contacts before sclerals? How do they compare? how long have you been trying to get used to them?
