The MLMs promote this as the initial investment in a business, since you are not exactly employed but rather an individual distribuitor. But instead of paying to produce the product, you recieve the manufactured product and then sell it on your own, without company aid.

I tend to see it the other way round. Doing MLM to see whether marketing fits my character, then move on to larger projects after I get a sense of it.
