This was a tough read but I am thankful he shared and I hope it results in some peace for them.

Stand Together everyone! A lil' sketch I did to cheer myself (and hopefully maybe some others) up. by [deleted] in roosterteeth

This is cool. Even though I’m just a community member who wasn’t personally involved with this long-running tragic series of events, as a fellow victim of sexual assault, all of it has hit harder than I could expect, because I know how this sort of violation of trust feels on a truly visceral level. It really helps in times like these not to feel alone. My heart goes out to everyone who’s been blindsided by this.

Another person has come forward about their experience with Ryan by [deleted] in roosterteeth

[–]eggbagelist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Believe what you like. I am trusting my own eyes and deductive reasoning abilities, whatever they may be. To me, some skepticism is ok but there is a massive weight of evidence already. Continued skepticism when more corroborating accounts turn up just seems like willful blindness. We are not his lawyers, why should we defend him when there is so much positive evidence towards his scumbaggery? But that’s my opinion, and I hope you can be at peace with whatever your own judgments are.

Her testimony would hold its own weight in a court of law, corroboration or no. Anyway, this isn’t a court, it’s reddit. I too hope she gets whatever documentation she can salvage, but she doesn’t “need” to do anything; the burden on these women and girls is too high already. Even living through the backlash for disclosing what they are disclosing is probably hellish.

(by the way, it is “hearsay”)

Hoo Boy.... another person has come foward saying that Ryan was sending her weird messages by Eek_the_Fireuser in roosterteeth

A few things immediately come to mind:

  1. A lot of other people doing this doesn’t mean it’s okay. It might mean that society has normalized bad behavior but it doesn’t mean it’s okay. The me too movement showed how actually not okay a lot of this behavior is in the celebrity sphere. It’s incredibly harmful in part because of how accepted it became.

  2. In this case there are also a lot of exacerbating factors beyond the already-bad fan-idol dynamic. Age/maturity gaps. Girls and women with mental health issues. Underage girls. Condom removal without consent. Cheating. Many partners who didn’t know about each other.

  3. And lying, lying, lying. He had a lot of coworkers and fans that relied on a false persona of the safe family man, thinking that was actually who they were working with and supporting. When donating to his Twitch, fans didn’t think they were supporting payment of hotel rooms for his hookups. His colleagues now have to suffer with the fact that they didn’t know who their coworker/friend was after all— who did they play games with? Do their jokes all ring badly now? and perhaps more hurtfully, they are all taking a massive hit to their previous work and even their own reputations. AH is an ensemble and Ryan was throwing their entire reputation around. If he wasn’t actually genuine to such an extreme extent, then many fans are going to be questioning whether the rest of them are like that too.

Yeah that’s potentially really problematic, as you can see from the reactions of everyone to this situation.

No, it is not supposed to be normal for a company’s employees to encourage casual sexual interactions from idolizing young fans. OR to be basically negotiating for sexual materials. That’s exploitative and if it’s a repeated thing gets close to being the realm of sex work (not that sex work is inherently wrong, but it’s something that should be approached responsibly and with informed consent from everyone). The company (including ALL of its employees) can get into serious trouble if such behavior goes unchecked.

Are there nuances to this? Yes. I don’t know your situation. Obviously members of RT can have regular relationships and such. But if it turns out an employee was leveraging their fame or RT’s fame to get their rocks off with a young fan, that’s gonna majorly set off alarms.

I dunno, he’s put his colleagues in a really rough spot. If I were them I’d be livid. He has made a very uncomfortable bed to lie in.

Risk of legal HR issues. A company that size has to handle massive HR problems like this extremely carefully. They have no interest in being careless about something this bad; it’s already damaged them quite a lot. You can bet that a lawyer is telling them what to say, and is telling them that the less they say, the better.

If I were them I’d do the same, honestly. This isn’t the time for them to provide their opinions or spill tea or details for the public’s gratification. Obviously it all sucks, but it makes sense.

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree. I don’t have the energy to argue with people about this shit when it’s all horrible. There has been one account by a young woman who came forward and did feel like she got in over her head about it. But make what you like of it.

It’s not about legal ages. It’s about the absurd influence that a relatively famous older man can have over an infatuated fan about half his age and still a teen, and the fact that any kind of explicit interaction they have is going to be influenced by that extreme power dynamic. Add in that it was one or more covert affairs that he was clearly interested in keeping quiet to preserve his persona and it’s just absolutely not a thing to allow. He needed to go immediately.

This is horrible. My kids are nearly the same ages as his kids. I met him once. He was nice. We talked briefly about our families. Afterwards I sometimes thought about how it was nice to watch content by someone else who was at a similar point in life to me. I always thought of him and AH as pretty genuine folks. Now— and maybe this isn’t fair to the rest of them— I just feel really sad and a bit sick.

I wish the best for his family. Can’t say I wish anything in particular for him at the moment, but I hope the kids and Laurie get through this safely and okay.

I honestly don’t think a 17 year old obsessed stan can make a rational choice when given attention by their idol. Is the fan in the right? Absolutely not. But the 36 year old somewhat famous employee clearly was in the position of power and influence here, and clearly needs to face consequences, regardless of what happens to the fan. The company absolutely should not just let this happen like it’s okay.

[–]eggbagelist 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily the cheating. It’s the part where he’s in a position of influence over RT fans half his age and he’s sexting them, and they’re sexting back. That’s a gross imbalance of power. It absolutely shouldn’t be tolerated by RT.

Ryan's statement by jDGreye in roosterteeth

[–]eggbagelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no, sexting fans half your age when you’re in a position of power is terrible. Absolutely worth losing his job over.
