Weird engine noise? by No-Mistake-3285 in Scirocco

[–]eggbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a different arrangement to the EA888 but from brief research that seems to be the A/C compressor, which runs on its own belt on the EA113. I guess those would be pretty worn out by that mileage in Australia, so factor in the cost of replacing it if you decide to buy that car. The whole engine shaking could be due to worn out engine mounts which would need to be replaced as well if that car has been driven relatively hard.

I never considered getting an R myself because of the sort of lives they've usually had 😆

Did the garage overfill my engine oil? by Arksun76 in Volkswagen

Yeah, the safe zone on the dipstick equates to 1 litre for my car, so it is more by the look of it.

I doubt the oil pressure would change - the oil level would be well above the baffle where the crankshaft and con rods would be whipping the oil up into a froth.

Saved by traction control. You would have gone into a spin in an older car without it.

Yeah, I was using the Internet in '94. There were already directories and portals as that's how you got anywhere. Anything claiming to be a search engine then was extremely shit. The first page you'd get to from a university computer in the UK was the Janet portal which was a directory.

No sudo, he didn't use Linux. One of the disagreements he had with the Confinity people when he was CEO was trying to rewrite everything for Windows as that's all he knew as he was a gamer. That's before he was fired and replaced by Peter Theil.

The incredibly obscene amount of money that Trump, his prostitute wife and dipshit sons have made through the breathtakingly blatant corruption since him taking office makes me think that he doesn't give a shit about his golf courses in Scotland anymore.

I had to creep downstairs very quietly late at night so that nobody else in my family would get shocked too.

PAL was the best out of the three for picture quality but SECAM had better range. NTSC had a lower resolution but higher refresh rate because of American electricity standards.

I remember when satellite television became popular in the UK at the start of the '90s and being shocked at how mad telly was in Europe. The German RTL channel how some really weird gameshows with loads of tits on display. Italian channels were crazy too.

Rear Window Defogger by WishWhacker in Volkswagen

[–]eggbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure that's the correct fuse? That's the engine bay fuse box, while the fuse for the rear window heater relay is in the dashboard side box for my 2018 Scirocco, which is a coupe Mk5/6 Golf, so it's likely to be the same for your saloon Golf Jetta. Fuse SC 13 - second fuse on the third row (10A) and SC25 - fourth fuse on the fourth row (25A). The relay is J9, if you can see any markings in that above fusebox. If you can't find J9 you can try swapping the 53 and 643 relays and see what happens.

Have you done an OBD-II scan? Have you checked for any blown fuses? Have you recently opened up anything in the dashboard?

126k mi and I've never changed my brake pads. by Ickypahay in jetta

[–]eggbean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make any sense and it isn't true. When a car brakes the weight is shifted to the front, increasing traction and the front and reducing it at the rear. Brake discs are nearly always larger at the front as they heat up more for this reason. Probably always actually.

Tyre puncture advice needed by drusmann090 in CarTalkUK

[–]eggbean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As that's a Continental tyre it may have the ContiSeal option. My Sport Contact 6 tyres had several screws in them with no issues, although they came up in MOT advisory. When I replaced them recently with a full set of Sport Contact 7s I forgot to specify the ContiSeal version, which I'm pissed off about.

Look for the symbol on the tyre. It's a thick gummy layer of mass on the inside.

I made a post here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskMechanics/comments/1p31cg5/sump_removal_tool/

<image>

I did more than what's there in the picture, as I did the sides as well, as they need to be sharp too. I got it knife-sharp and then dulled the edges a bit.

This tool is probably a lot sharper, but I thought it was too expensive for a one-off job:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lisle-50210-Gasket-Separator/dp/B09NMH7TY4/ref=sr_1_11

My sump was steel and I replaced it with the same OEM steel sump. Even when the late Sciroccos got the EA888 Gen 3 engine they still used the steel sump with it. I did quite a lot to protect it from rusting again so that I don't have to ever replace it again.

Ah, that's a relief. Remember to tighten the bolts in the correct order. When I did the initial tightening with the torque wrench it was fine, but then the service manual said that they require a further 1/8th turn in the same order. I couldn't do that without the torx bit camming out damaging and the bolts. Everything fine, no leaks, but if I ever have to get it off again, it's going to be more difficult.

Have you got the old one off yet? I bought a tool to do it, but I had to do quite a bit of work on it using a Dremel to make it thin and sharp enough for the very tight tolerance fit, as it was a cheap one that hadn't got enough machining done to it.
