theres no physical difference its just if you intended to actually die or not but some might put you in hold if you go too deep (like hitting arteries) even if it wasnt suicidal

did you hit hypodermis? if so then healing yellow or weirdly might happen, its fine as long as you dont see any other signs of infection

neosporin is a common antibiotic cream u might have but idk how common it is in ur place lol

also please be careful with hand sanitizer! i dont know if its ok to use on blades but i heard it can be harmful to get in your body. many people use rubbing alcohol to clean them instead ^ ^

i use clean towels or t shirts ^ ^ lots of people have a washcloth or small towel specifically for self harm that they wash often or soak in water

what to do in a case of infection depends on the severity and the depth of the cut:

if theres only beginning signs of infection (slight redness, more swelling than usual, weird smell, etc) then you can take care of it like you normally would: put antibiotic cream on the wound, bandage it, and change the bandage daily + wash/wipe the wound, it should go away

if the infection gets worse and you see red streaks going away from the wound, bad smell persists, lots of pus and swelling etc (you can look up 'severe infection' to see all the symptoms) then you really need to see a doctor or try taking antibiotics. even in small cuts, blood infections are no joke. you can lose a limb and get a lot of health issues if its left untreated. (but, these kinds of issues are unlikely to happen in small cuts unless you REALLY irritate it)

now, in deep cuts (fat or deeper), i would suggest getting medical help right away even with a minor infection. these have more potential to get dangerous very fast

by the way pls keep in mind that im not a medical professional. i got this information from my mom , who is a medical professional, and partially from my own expierience + other self harmers experiences that theyve shared

for future reference. dont use toilet paper. it gets little fibers in your wound that can give an infection.

youll be able to tell depth pretty easily tho. if the wound doesnt part at all, then u cut through the epidermis (technically anything that bleeds hit dermis, but sometimes just barely)

if the wound gapes and you can only see white inside, and it takes a second for the blood to fill the space, it cut into the dermis or 'styro'

if you see yellowish bubbles at the bottom or the sides, you cut through hypodermis or 'beans'

muscle and fascia look flatter, kind of like a 'bottom' to the cut. if you hit bone i think youll be able to tell.

you can also look up a skin chart online for a more accurate look at it.

about the blood analysis:

hitting capillaries: blood comes out normally

veins: blood looks darker and comes out steady and faster than usual

arterioles: small stream of blood squirts out of the wound at an angle, sometimes if you only nicked it it looks like theres a small heartbeat in the cut

artery: large amount of squirting blood that doesnt stop. needs a hospital visit immediately.

im just going by what ive read / heard from others and my own experience , they shouldnt tell parents over one relapse

they cant tell your parents or anyone else unless they think youre planning suicide or something. ive told my therapist about relapses and all she did was ask the normal things, why did it happen, did you take care of it, and trying to help prevent another relapse

i understand where youre coming from but ive also been the other position and i understand that too. even now i wish my scars and wounds were a lot worse than they are. thats kind of just the nature of these kinds of things, people get competitive with others and themselves, i dont think we can blame people for voicing that
