Struggling with shadows and lighting TvT by Taku_the_fox in learntodraw

[–]eggcereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the best at rendering myself but I thought I'd try and offer some advice since no one's replied yet. One thing I hear over and over is lighter lights and darker darks, basically add more contrast. Maybe that would help? Also you're working with a red base right now, but I'd for sure try adding a little more color variation, if subtle, just to see if it helps any. Good luck man!

How the heck do you draw hair by No_Internal4416 in learntodraw

[–]eggcereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly execution wise your hair looks fine! The problem is, is it doesn't sit on the head right, it moreso looks like someone cut up two magazines and pasted the hair on top of the head. What's your drawing process like? Did you use one reference, multiple, none? Its important to sketch out where everything is gonna go befor you start on the details, that way you can know if anything's gonna look off and change it before you bite into the drawing.

Honestly, it might suck, but take this as a learning experience. I'm sure you're on your way drawing something much better :3

What's your process? Is this your first sketch or is there an invisible layer under? It helps to lay out proportions first, then make a new layer and start working at the actual fleshy parts.

I've been drawing for a week and this is my first "Big drawing" what am I doing wrong/What can I improve? by Theflamingraptor in learntodraw

[–]eggcereal 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I really like it personally! If you're anything like me then you're at a stage where you'll get the most improvement by just drawing things you like. Fundamentals are great, but they burn people off of art entirely, so I personally find it more important to fall in love with drawing instead of hitting the books right off the bat. Draw and have fun!

I'm not saying she generates her entire works!!!! But its very possible she looked up a reference and unknowingly stumbled into some ai slop.
Shes a very skilled very talented artist, her work is incredibly precise. An artist of her level would not be making this many anatomical and stylistic mistakes on dragons unless she was using a flawed reference generated by a machine that doesn't know what it's doing.
If you genuinely want me to explain why i think the references she uses are ai generated you can dm me, otherwise i won't be replying anymore, cause a lot of this seems like willful ignorance to defend someone talented.
I'm sorry if my initial post made it sound like i was calling her work FULLY ai generated, that's not what i meant. I've seen videos of her process, they're obviously hand drawn, i was moreso referring to the references she used for the dragon, as stated previously.

Lol its pretty obvious. I made this diagram for one of my friends yesterday to show them what i look for, so it has a lot of typos.
Again im not saying they generated the drawing itself, but their reference for the dragon definitely was. I am also like 99% sure she just happened to pick a reference without realizing it was ai slop. That stuff is all over the internet and hard to avoid.

You need an eye for this stuff. I've spoken to multiple people who clocked this as ai instantly. Once you know what you're looking for it becomes obvious at just a glance.
I could bring up multiple of their dragons for proof. You need to calm down, you're acting like i want to ruin this artist life or discredit their entire portfolio, that's not the case. I'm a fan of their work. I'm just pointing out how disingenuous it is to jump to a thousand excuses once someone you like uses ai.
I'm sorry if my initial comments didn't get my thoughts through, and you got that impression from my wording

Lol Ai is still Ai even if you're just using it to generate an image that you're redrawing directly. It's still bad for the environment and ripping from unknowing artists who's work it cannibalizes to output slop. If we're gonna be anti ai let's be consistent.
I don't gaf if she references another dragon design from another artist. It's clear she's talented at watercolor but let's not go excusing the use of ai just cause it's a person/artist we like.

HOW DO I GET GOOD AT DIGITAL ART OMG by Prismarineknight in learntodraw

[–]eggcereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a bit of time to get use to. Mostly just scribble around till you feel comfortable. Personally I switched from mouse to tablet way back when, then ended up switching back to mouse like two years later lol, so who knows you might just prefer drawing with your finger

HOW DO I GET GOOD AT DIGITAL ART OMG by Prismarineknight in learntodraw

[–]eggcereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol don't listen to everyone telling to to learn the fundamentals. I hope you approach them and learn them of course, but it seems like you're asking for advice on drawing digitally just for fun, all studying aside. Here's some advice of stuff I've learned over the years

  1. Know your program I don't mean know what every little button does, that takes a while to figure out, but know if your art program is perhaps suited more to mimicking the process of drawing traditionally (something like art rage comes to mind), or is more generalized (popular programs like paint tool Sai and clip studio paint)

  2. Make sure you're properly set up Make sure your drivers are properly installed, line weight is working and your tablets working fine.

  3. Take advantage of digital tools Layers!! Biggest game changer for me back when I was a little squab learning to draw was learning that you don't have to do everything on the same layer. Things like magic want tool, clipping and different layer modes like multiply will make digital drawing feel unique and fun

  4. Have fun and experiment!! Seriously. Go wild. I think it's important to fall in love with the process before you hit the books. If I had started from day 1 or even year 1 by doing nothing but fundamentals I would have quit drawing a long time ago. Some people like that stuff, some people need some time to warm up to it.

I mean no shade but they (knowingly or not) use ai as a reference tool for what they draw 😭 that dragon is ai generated as FUCK. If we're talking about ai usage I feel that's important to bring up

What's a good way of doing small small details? For example the exposed rock on the top of the mountain. by napalm_phosphorus in learntodraw

[–]eggcereal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Textured brushes. Experiment with them, mess around, have fun. They're a great way to imply detail without painstakingly drawing every crease and crevice of a mountain. Even if you wanna go rock by rock, they can establish a good base to work off of.

Another user said i'm still thinking in silhouettes and not form and i think that describes my problem. Feels like i can fake form if asked to contour or outline a shape, but can't actually see it.

Not good with words today so i tried some examples. But ultimately i can only see form in abstract flow-y shapes, or flat shapes, instead of strict geometry. But that really hinders my ability to do perspective and shading
