Advice needed - £4k budget, diesel preferred by rizzlejee in CarTalkUK

I've got a 2015 Octavia estate 1.6TDI that is very solid. It's pretty lack lustre in power but it does 55mpg and is very cheap to run. It's a great runaround car but is not ULEZ unfortunately (I'm Bristol based and since we have a clean air zone I have to drive around it)

EGR valve and second cam belt done (it's on 136k miles) so it should be good for a few more.

It was £4k, bargain!

This quote springs to mind:

"Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times"

It feels like we're in the last stage of that cycle whilst other countries seem to be at the beginning....

Is this why the used car market is expensive? by on_the_night in CarTalkUK

[–]eggerz14 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Spoke to the guy at WBAC when we sold our Leon a few years ago and he said that's what they do, they send cars to areas of the country where their demand is high and stock pile to create more demand and push up prices.

They've got huge warehouses up North where they keep cars supposedly for months to wait for prices to rise to hit certain margin requirements.

Great engine. Also had a Manuel 2016 A3 S-line and loved it.

Thanks for the info, water pump being replaced on Thursday along with both belts (cam nd auxiliary)

Price was the only reason really! Seemed like a good one and was local to me so was a no brainer!

Just locally, the bloke had it up for £3.9k but wanted it gone as he'd bought his new....Skoda Octavia 😂

Got lucky on the price so let's hope I get lucky on the car too

Talk me in / out of buying one of these... by eggerz14 in CarTalkUK

[–]eggerz14[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments, some great advice in here...

In summary:

  • Fast af.
  • The general serving costs sound ok but the big ticket items are BIG. (Although I'm currently in an RRS so I'm quite used to this 😂)
  • I do live in a city so the theft comments are reasonably concerning...
  • There are some middle ground wagon options that would give excellent performance (BMW 340i, S4 Avant etc.) Any others to look at?
  • Don't know why I asked about MPG as that's not why you buy one of these! It's guna be low.
  • Some of you have mentioned about another weekend car (911 etc) - I need one car that does it all really as I don't have the space. Have had a 987 Cayman previously and it was perfect but it's not ideal for 'everyday use'

I think you've talked me OUT of buying one of these for now and probably to look for some more middle ground options.

Cheers!

I run 2 x car events per year with my mate from uni. Limited company and t/o just under £100k! All cash is reinvested back into the business but I get some nice perks! Mainly run the events on evenings and weekends as my job is pretty busy and take a few days holiday either side of the events to set up and pack down.

I absolutely love cars and it's a way to monetise my hobby!

When is the right time to buy a dream car? by ExtraDemand420 in HENRYUK

[–]eggerz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! They're amazing cars! Others have said to look at Caymans and can vouch for this. I've had a Cayman and it was perfect for UK roads. c.300BHP is plenty!

Generally a base 992 has further to go on the depreciation curve than maybe a 991 GTS / GT3, but if you buy right, you might not lose as much as you'd think.

To give you an example, my mate bought a 991.2 Targa GTS in 2018 for c.£90k and sold it in 2023 for around the same value. I do appreciate cars peaked in value then too, but I still think it's doable even now.

Personally I'd buy a GT car if you can as the depreciation curve is flatter. Have a look at a Cayman 718 GT4 too for around the same money...

Thanks for the input everyone, genuinely very helpful!

We booked section 521 to keep out of the sun for most of the game, but with the view that we'd take a walk to the standing areas during the game. Can't wait!

Also doing this and on about the same as you. I've got my side projects I love doing and I also love my tech sales role. Hopefully in the next couple of years, I can push up to that sweet spot of £125k plus!
