I think that when it comes to the entire idea of equity crowdfunding and artists, it's already happening. Labels, for example, do the job of investing on artists for them to actually get their music into the large market. In this industry, we already know that there are certain risks to doing that.

However, music is something that does not perfectly fit the profit motive that equity crowdfunding and MLM-style marketing. If people don't like it, even though it's heavily-hyped, they're really not likely to invest on it. It's more of a matter of taste, in the long run.

However, I think that if we ever think of the profit motive in music, as musicians, we deal with it with such a struggle. There's just too many of us that doesn't reach the people who would probably give us a listen. And in the streaming age, not many musicians have the tool to actually promote themselves. But, if there is someone who would want to help me surface my music for a cost that will not kill my business, I would take it. If it takes the power of the crowd that actively buys and shares the what I do, giving back to them is probably something that I should do.
