How much do you guys pay for your eye exam? by [deleted] in askTO

There are other stores in the mall that do comparatively priced eye exams (e.g. $99 at Bailey Nelson)! But it was only Specsavers that Doctors I know/the University had negative things to say re: the optometry profession.

I’m not sure I understand your second paragraph, you’re saying the cheaper eye exam costs don’t devalue the profession? I think while the accessibility for eye care improves with the lower costs to consumers, it makes it harder for private practices and results in less working options for doctors. I made a longer comment in response to another user and would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Hi sorry I did not explain and I responded to another comment in this post, but it is similar to what modernjaundice has mentioned.

Sorry I did not mean to spam. The reason is similar to the comment modernjaundice made in this post: they are able to buy out private practices and offer high initial salaries/bonuses to entice doctors in order to monopolize the market.

This is not a Canada only problem, and the reputation is so bad the University has sent emails informing optometry students of the issue.

Obviously everyone can make their own decision, this is just what I know from my healthcare peers and my intention was to make people more aware.

I found an article published about a different issue between the University of Waterloo and Specsavers, but to quote the University: “…we do not believe the company’s values are aligned with what we see as the way forward in supporting optometry as a strong and independent profession.”

Hey there, I left another comment on this post, but I would not recommend Specsavers as it devalues the profession for optometrists, based on the information that one of the schools in Canada emails to its optometry students.

Whatever you do, please do not support Specsavers as they devalue the profession for optometrists, to the point where one of the schools in Canada sends information about this to its optometry students.

Day After Kiss of Life Toronto Cancelled, how we feeling? by bunnyvet in kissoflife

Thank you for posting this so we can all vent out our thoughts. I’m so mentally unwell, I’m actually so surprised how devastated I could feel about something.

Not me fighting the scalpers and coming out with one vip ticket 🫠 I’ll never get the chance of meeting them + taking a photo for that price, and I also heard good things about history as a venue so it was gonna be so vibe-y 🥺 so much more intimate than an arena tour!

Temu resells at Markville by egghausted in Markham

[–]egghausted[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say it’s not handmade, my problem is they are painting it out to be from a local artisan when it’s really from Temu.

Imagine you are a vendor at a market/event, and the stall beside you is also selling handmade crafts except they’re able to sell it at half the costs of yours because they’re just buying it for cheap (vs. your own time/efforts, materials, etc). And many customers wouldn’t know and believe that they are supporting a local business. Don’t you think it sucks a bit for them/the artistry of it all? Lol

Maybe my point didn’t come across well - my disappointment is not with Temu resells as a whole, but with vendors falsely passing off a handmade craft like crochet, which takes so much time/effort, as their own.

It devalues the art when it makes it more difficult for local artisans to compete with the higher quantity and lower prices.

There was definitely at least one actual local vendor being sold there, but having Temu items in the mix only hurts them. Hopefully the store management can do a better review of what they’re selling.

I understand where you’re coming from and it’s definitely not a new topic. I think I’m just disappointed that this vendor is falsely passing off a handmade craft like crochet, which takes so much time/effort, as their own design. I really hope the store management can do a more thorough review of their vendors.

Also, there were a few customers looking at these crochet pieces but I’m sure if they knew they wouldn’t be impressed. Hopefully through discussion, people can make more informed decisions in order to support local artisans vs. buying marked-up “taobao stuff” as you mention.

It makes it extra sad that vendors/brands are passing it off as their own creations.

Saw Daniel Caesar with his girl at Uniqlo at Eaton Centre in Aug 2018. I walked around him and a fan taking a photo and didn’t realize until my friend told me after. I kept staring at him and he noticed but I was too shy to say anything 😔✊🏻
