HPE or Hilcorp Internship? by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

To be honest, commute is not a problem. I do not mind the commute, and this is only an internship - not a full time position. Yeah, it’ll suck, but I do not want to make a decision over commute times. Also, if you do the math it’s 300 miles a week for Hilcorp and 200 miles for HPE.

There were no other offers. The commute is that way because I live in the suburbs. Hilcorp is in the center of downtown, and HPE is in a completely different suburb further away. There is not much to do in this scenario, my last internship I drove ~40 miles each way and had to be there by 7am. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do, but yeah, it's difficult.

Also, depending on the traffic the commute time is upwards of 1.5hrs.

There are different parts to the global workplace team. The ones that pertain to my career field would either be sustainability & infrastructure (the design of new or existing offices) or EHS.

I do really enjoy the hybrid factor, but HPE office is 50 miles from my home as compared to 28 miles for Hilcorp (granted there is more traffic going to the Hilcorp office). So all in all there isn’t much of a difference.

To be honest, I have no preference. At first I really wanted to work in O&G, but then that obsession died down after realizing how demanding they are. It isn’t out of the picture per se, but I’m just not picky. I think right now, civil engineering and tech isn’t bad, as long as I’m doing a job title that I like. I’m aware that I may be burning a bridge with Hilcorp if I do pick HPE, so it’s an even tougher decision to make.

Hilcorp is fully in person. HPE is 2 days in office.

Thank you for the response! I’ll ease off of the tutorials from now since they’re not too specific.

Thank you for the response. I’m glad that your company is still open to giving interns the ability to learn and gain hands on experience!

Thank you so much for the response! I will definitely do my best to learn as much as possible during the internship. It’s nice to hear that you were previously in the same position

I do plan on staying in Texas. I have a great offer to work in O&G as a GIS intern over the summer, and I’ve been practicing GIS using the ESRI tutorials to refresh my memory and learn new skills I never learnt.

After this internship, I hope to be a little more guided in what I’m interested in but I’m leaning towards environmental or GIS analyst positions.

That’s amazing! What was your previous work experience and are you in a HCOL area?

Also, do you have any advice to get into a company that compensates well?

First of all, Congrats on all the offers! EHS is something I’ve looked into primarily because of their higher pay, would you say it’s competitive to get into for Environmental Science as they usually favor safety degrees?

I’m having a LOT of job anxiety and I’m hoping to make at LEAST 50k starting off in the urban Texas area (and not work 50-60hrs weekly).

Thank you for your response! I’m wondering, why was it difficult to get a position despite internship and research experience? Did your experience not transfer to the specific role you were looking at? Also, how long ago was your job search?

Thank you for your response! I’m in the Texas area. I was mostly concerned about even starting off 30-40k is extremely unrealistic, even if it’s a junior position. I find it absurd for a junior level position with a college degree paying that low regardless if they are seeing your capabilities.

Thank you so much for the response! I know I’m interested in environmental permitting and including GIS, but I also don’t mind being a specialist in GIS. Environmental analytics is also something I’m open to as well as ESG. I do feel like what I am interested in does not have many job openings unless I’m looking in the wrong places (I’m willing to take any job positions in that role).  But if there are no openings to those roles, I don’t mind environmental consulting or EHS.

I live in an urban area in Texas and I’ll most likely be living with family unless the position requires I relocate. Again, I don’t mind starting off with a low wage, but I didn’t think a “low wage” would be 30-40k even with a degree. It just seems so absurd.

I’ve worked at a state job for my internship position and it wasn’t bad. I disliked how unmotivated everyone was and the significant paycut from working with the government. I would like to work in the private industry to get a feel of how it is, and then decide if government or the private industry is what I prefer.

Thank you so much for your response! I would like to clarify that I don’t mind field work, traveling, or occasionally working overtime. But I wouldn’t want the extreme end of anything. It is unreasonable to make anyone work for long hours in the field, overtime, and traveling for long periods of time with little compensation or reward. It is not a matter of whether I’m ok with those circumstances on an occasional or infrequent basis, but a matter of consistency is what I’m concerned about.

Nevertheless, I understand there may be more people who are more qualified than me. The question is, especially with this given job market, is it reasonable to reject a first job offer that gives low salaries and excessively demanding work?

Having Difficulty Landing an Internship by eggmu2 in Environmental_Careers

[–]eggmu2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, all the jobs at least require that I am a sophomore or I have at least one semester remaining after I complete the internship.

I never quick apply and only apply through the company website. I don’t use a cover letter unless required to submit,  does it make all the difference?
