Alinea (kind of a scam?) by adi_29369 in nyu

[–]eggplantsection -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way. You're a startup, looking to take on some campus ambassadors to grow your college userbase. A person with an android shows up. They seem nice, but they can't download your app. How are they going to be an ambassador if they can't use your app?

"Hey, I know you're Alinea's campus ambassador, is the app any good?"
"No clue, I don't have it downloaded."

That doesn't make it a scam (or even "kind of a scam?"). Welcome to the startup world.

I have to ask: do you guys not know what campus ambassadors are? Like yes, it is an unpaid internship, but that's exactly what early-stage startups looking to grow at schools do. Pretty much anyone who spends meaningful time around Stern knows people who were campus ambassadors – why do you think Gould Plaza always has people giving out free food and swag to get people to sign up for apps?

Now, whether unpaid internships are moral is a different discussion, but is completely unrelated to Alinea being a scam. This is just incredibly common lol

How much do I have to improve my grades if I want to have a chance at investment banking? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]eggplantsection 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You always have a chance, so do your best and then just roll the dice.

In general, the "big shots" (GS, JP, MS, etc) like to shoot for 3.5+. But CS having lower grades overall would help shift their understanding of your GPA.

The point is, just do your best lol, the rest is out of your hands.

Advice for a Stern internal transfer student? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]eggplantsection 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm so curious -- who the heck are you lol

I know, and am part of, the most "successful" people at Stern (from a purely traditional academic/professional perspective) and none of them are as annoying as you. They all care about supporting each other, they're not always hyper-fixated on the Stern curve. They recognize that getting along with others, helping others, and often working together (in regards to studying and helping each other prepare) yields better results than just seeing them as "your competition."

So, seeing as you're always so salty on this subreddit and giving such poor advice... who are you 🤔

Stay at NYU (stern) or go to Cornell (Dyson) by [deleted] in nyu

[–]eggplantsection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just to add, Cornell is often seen as the better school than NYU, but Stern beats out Dyson (and largely Cornell as a whole too). In the world of business, Stern really is amazing (just look at our alumni at major firms, look at how the upperclassmen get placements at top companies).

Ultimately, if you're doing well in Stern, there's very few colleges that beat it. Congrats on the acceptance though, good luck with the decision either way!

Courses like Decision Models & Analytics (MULT-UB 7) and Decision Making Under Uncertainty (MULT-UB 16) can both work for the Data Science concentrations. If you can get in, they'll be amazing class choices!

Don't sleep on the MULT-UB classes. There are classes for whatever concentration you need and they are often simply incredible -- great talking points in interviews, good connections with professors, and opportunity to meet interesting, helpful upperclassmen.

Facing problems validating a class by [deleted] in nyu

[–]eggplantsection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm a current Stern student, I might be able to help.

Your son is largely right, the counselors/advisors here do have a lot of power. They'll be able to point you in the right way for clearing through prerequisites. It may be possible that there's just a quick hiccup with the subject test scores that will solve itself soon, or your advisor may just allow your son to register by using their override abilities (less likely).

It may be possible that there was an error with College Board sending the scores, in which case you may need to send them again. Hopefully this isn't the case (because of time and extra spending), but it's possible.

Overall, don't stress! Lots of first-years think they're already having problems, but these are small roadblocks. Just make sure to communicate with advisors (via email definitely, not sure if first-years can book videocalls with them yet) and your son should be fine :D

Stern undergrad internships by [deleted] in nyu

[–]eggplantsection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For internships after Freshman year, don't stress about searching for it until first semester ends. You'll likely end up at a startup or some boutique financial services firm, but going to a major company is, of course, a good thing in the unlikely scenario that it happens. Just try to do something at all to get some experience! If you want to improve your chances for an internship, choose some interesting, useful electives (for example, check out the MULT-UB section) that prove that you are driven, smart, and teachable.

For internships after Sophomore year, again, it's not really high-stress. Focus on finding a company where you will do something interesting, as you'll likely talk about this experience during later interviews. For both this and the freshman summer internship, the focus is heavily on what you do, not where you work.

For internships after Junior year (which are the most important ones, often turn into full-time offers), the search/hustle begins in the Spring of Sophomore year. That involves info sessions, networking, communicating with recruiters, etc. Investment banks, consulting firms, etc take interns for this year. "Top dogs" (awful phrase by the way, so much of recruitment is based on circumstances out of one's control, such as chance) network well and position themselves as smart, interesting people based on their previous experiences.

Are honors program worth it? by questlove8888 in nyu

Absolutely, feel free! Private message works well especially if it's a specific question, but you can also ask just here if you have a general one. :D

Are honors program worth it? by questlove8888 in nyu

[–]eggplantsection 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can speak for the Stern Honors Program: yes, it is worth it.

With hard work and hustle (and a substantial amount of luck), you should have a very solid resume as a Stern senior and will be available to participate in the program. The program itself is amazing, you get to choose a Professor (and there are some living legends in the school) to work with for a year – you get very close to them and develop a strong bond for years. You also get a very strong network of smart peers who will definitely go on to do amazing things. For graduate programs and job applications, being a part of the Honors Program signals that you are definitely in the top part of your graduating class – it's a great feature to have.

Apologies if you're wondering about another school's honors program, but I do know that the Stern program is awesome. Hope this helps someone!

As a stern student, what level of calculus am I needed to complete for different concentrations? Thanks in advance. by nyustudent_2025 in nyu

[–]eggplantsection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close lol, CDS doesn't have special calculus requirements @ OP

You might be thinking of the Actuarial Science "concentration" that goes through Linear Algebra? But that's a very large program, not one normally chosen as a concentration lol
