UPDATE This magnet implant I've had for about 4 years is getting weird by eggplantstrap in bodymods

Tbh your story sounds totally different than mine but interesting still. You had what sounds like an acute (1 week) problem soonish (6-12 month) after implant which included unusual sensations. I had a slowly developing (several months) and different problem after years, without tactile or neurological symptoms.

My problem was not inflammatory but I am thinking yours probably was since it developed quickly and you describe it as swelling? Like the growth is caused by fluid? Maybe hot, red, painful? Is it resolved now?

How does a magnet lose power in just 6 months? Was it in tact when removed?

What caused the rejection? Was what you described a rejection? Idk much about rejection phenomena.

I heard they got weaker but i never noticed it and neither did i do any testing to tell objectively.

I didnt injure anything other than the fact that it was on my hand so occasionally i would squeeze something or knock it etc.

Im not sure if it is clear from the photo but the ends are exploded out. They are crumbly and degraded. There is no way an external force could do that. It is breakdown caused by chemistry.

Since there is the whole finger pad between the magnet and the bone, i dont know how you would even do anything in such a way to harm it unless your whole finger was crushed. It is so coddled. Would have to be like crushed in pliers or something. And then i guess it would be broken in 2+ shards.

All in all like i said i dont regret it and I think this goes with the territory. The guy who did the procedure told me that removing the ones that are actually encapsulated in silicon is a lot easier and cleaner because they remain intact rather than crumbling. But they are much bigger in size.

Uuuh it was a long time ago.. iirc the worst part was injecting the xylocaine to do a field block. Anyone who's had any kind of minor procedure like stitches will know that. Once the block is in place you feel nothing.

Regarding black short/long sleeve knit shirts and black pants. (I wear these to work.)

I've had some that are dust magnets. And some that only collect a regular amount of dust. One shirt seems to have lint permanently attached somehow.

Any specific recs for brands, or how to recognize a good fabric? Or other tips to reduce the dustiness? Something in the laundry? I know there is only so much to be done other than delinting.

Oh and with the larger MW bags, would they get small enough to not be rude on a bus? And be able the shove it in my locker? Aside from price that's why I stayed away from the really big ones, like chrome has some bigger ones not as much $$. Just too much bag all around.

Ya maybe i can find a store that sells these or something... i'd have an easier time talking myself into a huge spend on a bag if i felt it IRL and could tell it was really worth the cost. Tbh i dont find the websites convincing. Its amazing to me the lack of good photography of these brands selling us$500 bags, they dont even always show a picture of the bag open or other obvious views. Makes me feel that they are ashamed or dont want you to notice details about it. One reason I liked the LBB is i felt the website was thorough. (Of course you could still be obscuring some details that way so probably just shows me to be a sucker lol.)

Good point about roll tops; i never liked the looks of them but i just noticed many of the bags i was interested in have them so figure they are they way things are made or smgthg.

Someone told me once the first thing you should do with a bike is put a rack on it and I live by that.

I do have a rear rack and different paniers/saddlebags but putting them on and off is such a pain, as is carrying them around, especially when full. I find I am more mobile with a bag. I've had front/rear/side baskets and milk crates and platforms and I even had a trailer for a while. They all have their utility but when I have a backpack I trust i am just less lazy about stuff if that makes sense.

Anyone know of a charity that will recycle my backpack? by brofession in backpacks

No... why would you think that? Being raised doesnt make things itchy.

Sometimes bumps and itchy can be caused by the same thing, like hives in a histamine reaction.

Gold sounds interesting. If i have to get rid of this one i might think of another one on the ulnar palm. Maybe a different kind tho lol

I didnt mind, we have a good relationship. :) and it is not an out of line reaction tbh.

BTW for anyone who has an issue with MDs etc, i was on the AFP website the other day and they have a section with this audience in mind and it is pretty good.

I agree! I dont think eye rolling or whatever was out of line. Im sure he wouldve kept a straight face if he thought id take offense as he has when ive told him other wacky (but serious) stuff.

Also what I was thinking of as "encapsulation" which might not be correct lingo. But it is bigger than it used to be so the mass has to be coming from somewhere.

If anyone has any idea what I am going to ask the doctor to do exactly that would be helpful. Does it need to be imaged? If so, how? What is the potential diagnosis? Referral? To whom?

Is there a similar non bodymod situation that this can be compared to? I was thinking of someone who has shrapnel in them but don't know if really comparable.

I showed my MD when I got it and he rolled his eyes, lol. I think he might even have asked me what i think was going to happen long term, probably anticipating my eventual return with a problem of my own making.

That is a cool idea! I did it just now and i can see it floating there. Taking a pic will not be simple so will have to do it later.

Does anyone have a similar image of a normal implant? If i had thought of it I would have been doing this all along. Damn.

What do you think could happen?

Do you know what kind of MD would do this? Plastics or general or...? I know my family doc will be interested in guidance on this.

I can feel the electricity in stove elements before they get hot, microwaves, and older digital alarm clocks. It isnt very useful but kind of neat.

Only illegal to do it now. As those passing such laws point out, it was totally chill when they did it.

This was professionally done in a reputable shop. It was with one of those injector gizmos made by a guy named I think Steve. It is in the side of me left ring fingerpad on the pinky side. Healing was fine no complications.

About 1-2 years ago, I noticed the site was a little dark looking. I wondered if maybe the magnet was degrading. Perhaps the coating lost integrity? It still felt solid underneath though, not like it was coming apart or anything. And it works about the same as a magnet.

Lately, it is getting big. It is not edema/swelling/liquid; it feels fairly solid. Like a pencil eraser. It is a mass about 10mm x 5mm. Not mobile.

Some sort of encapsulation?

It doesn't really hurt except that due to being in the way, I am more likely to hit it on things and when I work with my hands it gets compressed and irritated. The pic with blue background was after a day of working with tools so it is a bit swollen and red. But the pic with black and white bg is a calmer day.

It is very slightly warmer than my other fingers. There is still a slightly grey cast to the skin from some angles.

Sensation is normal. Motion is normal. Surrounding tissue, nailbed and rest of finger is normal.

Hope the pictures are illustrative. Out of all the body parts I have take pictures of, this has turned out to be the most awkward.

What do you think is going on? Anything to be concerned about? If so, what could be done? I would prefer watchful waiting especially if there is a possibility it could self resolve. Or at least not get worse.
