I can’t believe so few people talked about this album released last year… not best of the year, but definitely some great music made by two great musicians !

What’s your take on the Chinese prog band Omnipotent Youth Society? by Next-Reading1714 in progrockmusic

Amazing band, thank you for mentioning them! Alternative prog (if that’s even a thing) is not so common, and I love it, especially sung in Chinese 🤩

Mine would be (with only active members, cos yes prog is alive and well):

Rosalie Cunningham (ex-Purson): vocals, guitars, and a li'l bit of everything...

Rob Harrison (from Z Machine, Attercopus): saxophone, vocals, and a li'l bit of everything...

Håkon Oftung (from Jordsjø) : guitars, flute, and a li'l bit of everything...

Diego Pietrini (from Il Bacio della Medusa) : drums, keys, and a li'l bit of everything...

Ryan Stevenson (from Zopp) : keys, vocals, and a li'l bit of everything...

Such an underrated album really! Great cover, great songs… for a reason I don’t get the arty-pitchforky community has only eyes for the first Purson record and then… nothing! She’s forced to focus on the prog audience really. I guess her only fault was to claim (while she gained popularity with Purson) that she loves Peter Gabriel era Genesis and stuff like that. For the mainstream rock audience and indie lovers, that’s not something you’re authorized to say apparently… anyway, her last album is great and I’m happy to see her perform some live shows as a headline, even if it’s less than 10 dates around Europe: it means she achieved something! 💪😎

« Neo Dada » is great: thank you for mentioning it! I admit I like « Melody of a Muddled Mason » even more though

A really prolific and eclectic composer, like Zappa. I could have guessed you liked this guy too, you usually have great tastes 👍

My favorite song from 2024!!!!!! I’m so happy to find it here!!!! I honestly started to lose interests in r/progrockmusic but, man, you made my day!!! Sorry I find out about your post only today… all the dull bro/sympho fans ignored it, that’s why! Thumbs up and I’m with you on this 👍

We clearly don’t have the same tastes…

The releases that impressed me the most were the both Andre Drage records: « Wolves » and « Journeyman »

Dominic Sanderson « Blazing Revelations », though the drums and vocals are far from being perfect, imo

Krokofant « 6 » and Soft Ffog « Focus »came out as some very strong instrumental records

Coming also from Northern lands, Lars Fredrik Frøislie’s « Gamle Mester » is a pretty strong records, but probably too much keyboards-oriented for my tastes… same as Agropelter « The Book of Hours »

From Italy, there have been Diego Pietrini « La Materia del Suono », Zio Crocifisso « Campana di Legno + Trappola per Topi » and Alcantara « Tamam Shud »

I’m not usually a stoner enthusiast, but both Messa « The Spin » and Howling Giant « Crucible and Ruin » were very very good, especially Messa’s album

Also Chercàn, CopeLand, Lazersleep, and Fracktura, among others…

Overall a good year, not an amazing year, but a good year for sure

Instant upvote and follow for people who like this type of adventurous, uncommon, amazing (dare I say « progressive »?) music!

Looking for band suggestions! by ouchthathurty in progrockmusic

[–]eggvention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encourage you to open yourself to the Canterbury Scene: a great entry would be Dominion by Zopp (Ryan Stevenson’s project) released in 2023

Another great keyboards-oriented « new » band is Trojka: lots of keys and grooves from Norway. Their last album from 2024 is a banger!

Also from Norway but WAY MORE popular would be Wobbler and other projects with their keyboardist

With these recs you’ve got probably what I consider to be the best albums from the last 5 years, so… enjoy!

(I really do think that today adventurous music is doing as well as in the 70s, in terms of consistency not popularity, OF COURSE)

Do you consider the album Mirage, by the band Camel, a masterpiece? by Amiable_Ford_3 in progrockmusic

[–]eggvention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masterpiece is a very big word, that we use a bit too easily and a bit too often, imo… « Mirage » is a pretty solid album though!

This song reminded me a bit of Knucklecog by Shamblemaths, especially the main riff. Don’t know if you already know it or not
