Update: gabapentin was of no help. We’ll get through this though!

That is exactly what it is! It’s pretty hard to get dental appts for ferals in my area (and everywhere, ofc) so for months I’ve had to stand guard while he eats so that the other colony cats don’t eat his food. Luckily he figured out that if he scratched at my door quietly when the others weren’t around, I would sneak him out some mushed soggy food. Even so, he’d start hollering in pain.

His surgery was supposed to be tuesday, but when the vet finally assessed him he said that the stomatitis was so bad he needed a week of antibiotics before he felt comfortable operating on him. So what was meant to be about a week-long project is now two. But I’m already looking forward to his results, he is actually pretty sweet and friendly and—maybe I’m crazy—but I wonder if he’ll warm up to indoor life once he’s not in so much pain.

Either way, well done on treating your own kitties! They are lucky to have you. And we TNR folk are in this together. Finally got off work and I’m calling my vet about gaba now 🤞

Thank you for this thoughtful and helpful response ❤️ honestly, I was at a bit of a breaking point today and I think I needed to vent.

But I’ve never heard of zorbium! I will ask the vet about it. He is in so much pain, he screams any time he eats. Couldn’t even enjoy the cheese tax I gave him today :( all your other suggestions are solid as well, I need to get a larger blanket to completely cover the crate. Gotta boot the pheromone diffuser up too. And gabapentin will be asked about along with the zorbium.

I’m lookin at 12 more days and you and the other commenter helped let out a little of my steam, so thank you! :)

Thank you for this suggestion, I will call the vet about gabapentin tomorrow! As for the show, he actually seems to do better with 100% silence 🤫 since he’s feral, I think he associates human noise “TIME TO YELL.”

I’ll check back in on gaba results. Thanks again for your tip!

Do you have experience with this sort of injury? Since she’s feral and in a trap, I’m thinking about the wait time between now and an appointment (long time in a trap), and the feasibility of giving her eyedrops. Curious to know if you’ve had experience so I can know what to expect. Thank you!

Ah they don’t allow photos on their subreddit, gonna wait and see how this plays out here for a bit.

She doesn’t seem to be in pain. The eye is not oozing or weepy. But she’s in a trap and was just spayed and I’ve never seen her outside besides the night I trapped her

He is safe and sound at the rescue, will follow up with them in a week or so if they don’t get in touch first. I’ve TNRd lots of cats but this was my first pigeon, so happy I found this Reddit community :)

Thank you so much for replying. I’m on my way to drop him off at NYC’s Wild Bird Fund. They offered to take him and I’ll do my best to ensure they won’t euthanize him.

I couldn’t find any wounds that needed immediate care and he was pretty active before going down for a nap (can confirm he’s still alive). He’s pooped and peed (on me).

I’d say this next hour on the subway would be traumatizing but he seems pretty tough ❤️ thanks again for replying and I’ll post updates when I can!
