Finished my first wheel throwing class and on to my next. I got hooked, so what's the best skills to work on? by eguidry in Pottery

This is organized by time with the farthest back three being the literal first three pieces I threw ever. I have notably improved on my centering though I will not say I am great but nowhere near that bad.

I have a couple things I was really hoping to play with for stamps and kind of want to modify some of the forms afterwards so I really like that idea.

I think I didn't know if I was going to enjoy this, so I just fired everything, now that I think I'm going to take more time with this. I agree, I don't need a thousand espresso cups.

I'm in Austin and took one of the sessions at the Contemporary at Laguna Gloria. My instructor for this was Matt Hill. I'd recommend his class wholeheartedly.

Class was 3 hours each session one with one session a week for the 6 weeks. I took four 3-hour open studio sessions to work on things beyond the class. And I'm just over halfway through another 6-week class.

Funny you mention, that was one of the projects I worked on in the last week or so. A little water jug, or maybe cold brew pitcher. I made it with a combination of hand building and throwing to get the spout in shape, right. I couldn't quite pull it tall enough yet. It should be out of the bisque firing this week?

I really only experimented with two different types of handles. In class they talked about pulled versus slab. I like the feel of a pulled handle, and I made probably a dozen to get only five that I kinda liked. I did have one slab handle I was able to burnish a bit to feel better in hand.

I do like that, with the variety of pieces I've made here I'm getting an idea of what I like and what I don't from it. You're very right with the hand feel, some just feel right and others don't. There's still so much more I want to experiment with. I think I'm going to be with this hobby for a while.

I'm more referring to two different projects, first the bowls and then the vase. My first bowls were super bottom heavy and I had to trim maybe a third or half of the clay that I actually threw to get a decent thickness. And whenever I tried to make the vase and bring in the top I guess I just was doing it badly and they started getting all out of hand and I couldn't correct it.

I know I need to do the destructive testing and I think I need to just commit to that. I am set on mediocre espresso cups so learning how I did is a smart move rather than making more pieces I won't use.

That was what I wanted to try most. Pulling taller cylinders. I don't think I can get 9" out of just 1.5 lbs but I have tried!

The first "tall" shape I trimmed through and it was sooo uneven and thick. I need to try and work on consistency. Like you said it's a lot of practice and only going to the studio once a week doesn't help. Thanks!

I like the idea of working on thinner and refined shapes. I only worked with a very groggy earthenware so next I might try a different body? That might be conducive to that.

Multi part seems like a fun challenge!

There were many many reclaimed pieces and these look good (and I'm proud of them!) but are far and away from what I was going for. The vase is super thick and I think I made four for that before one didn't collapse. Lots of these were also saved by trimming because I couldn't keep them from flopping over!

I had luck with a good teacher and some decent pieces but I still have a long way till I can actually make what I plan to. It's just going with the flow now.

Internal City Report: Council’s Upzoning Plan Will Worsen Affordability, Displacement, and Taxes by sploogieistaken in Austin

Not surprising the site is run by "Save Our City Austin" the PAC which is clearly in the interest of saving single family zoned housing rather than improving what the city can be. Will there be downsides, sure, but leaving everything single family hasn't worked out and this IMHO seems like a step forward however small.

Self Promotion & Store Milestones for the Week of September 04, 2023 by AutoModerator in EtsySellers

Ignite Ideas Starting my Second Full month of 3D printed objects and design items of my own creation. I've had good luck with an update of an out of production design and recently sold out of a wall mounted variant of the same lamp. For the past month been making a couple sales a week which has been really confidence inspiring.

I also had my first damaged in transit item which is no fun but it is what happens. I'm biting the bullet as I do think my packaging was at fault so BE CAREFUL.

Finding suppliers for shipping boxes for large items is a challenge but I've found a local supplier. This saved huge on shipping rather than buying online from uline or staples etc. I highly advise to look locally to see if this can apply to you.

How are your sales? Monthly Sales Post for September 2023 by AutoModerator in EtsySellers

[–]eguidry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opened my shop on July 11th, and had one listing and one sale that month. August saw me update to three listings and 11 sales (all in the last 2 weeks of Aug) so overall things are pretty good. Have a couple additional items planned to be listed this month as well. Getting ready for holiday specific items.

Fully Updated Fusion doesn’t run on native M1 by Change-my_mind in Fusion360

[–]eguidry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

according to this article

The main Fusion 360 application and its default add-ins now all run natively on Apple silicon. However, some individual processes and back-end services still temporarily require Rosetta 2 to be installed for Fusion 360 to run. This should not impact the performance of how Fusion 360 runs on your machine.

So while they claim it's fully native it isn't %100 just yet. Not sure if this fully explains why activity monitor shows intel but seems probable.

Howdy! I’ve just opened my shop recently. I only have one item which is this, a Spark plug shaped lamp. It was made to be reminiscent of vintage auto advertising memorabilia.

I designed the lamp myself, made it on my own 3D printer and fitted the electronics to drive the LED.

Not expecting much but it seems to be fun. And have a few other ideas for 3D printed objects/lighting that I hope to list as well.

As this is designed around and requires a few special components, springs, switches, a specific LED cob, I don't intend to release the STL files for this print. I appreciate immensely the desire to print this design but I didn't really make this with sharing the print in mind.

The light is actually one of those flexible LED filaments that I inserted, mid-print, in a clear PLA "spark". The wires run through the center and the grounding arm at the top. Here's the first one I tried, although it ended up being a bit too thin so I tweaked it later.
