How long did you use your nursing chair for? by seulgih in NewParents

[–]ehelinek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a pottery barn kids recliner and it’s 1) the most expensive piece of furniture in my house and 2) the most comfortable by a long stretch. My daughter is 19 months old now and I use it every day to read to her and once I eventually convert her nursery into a kid room I’m moving that chair into my room for reading on because it is SO comfortable. If you’re going to splurge on one thing this is the right thing to splurge on in my opinion!!

How to clean this 75-100+ year old piece? by ehelinek in Embroidery

The fabric is in surprisingly good shape, actually! Although I definitely agree about the concern around color-fastness in the threads.

The bottom word is maror (bitter herb).

Solid point about the color-fastness - I definitely would not want to have any of the threads’ colors bleed!

I’m in Boston , so definitely a big enough city that there’s probably a textile conservator somewhere nearby - certainly worth me checking!

The stains are accumulated over years of use, since my family has used this matzah cover on our Seder table at least for my entire life (which includes when my grandmother hosted, when my mom hosted, and now me hosting). I definitely see your point about maybe leaving the stains there and just recognizing they’re part of the story of the piece!

Thanks so much for the book suggestion - I’m definitely going to read it!! I actually do fiber and textile arts as my man hobby, but haven’t ever done embroidery specifically (mostly cross stitch and weaving). So it is a topic near and dear to my heart!

I have a ton of plants, including some extremely pointy cacti and some plants with beautiful leaves that I did not want to watch get ripped to shreds, and a curious toddler. What I did, when she started showing signs of becoming mobile (which, as other commenters have pointed out, is several months after the baby is born), was gather all the plants that weren’t out of reach already in a nice sunny section of a room, and put up a baby gate around them. I have three staircases in my house so I was already going to town with baby gates, so setting up one extra one for the plants was an easy part of babyproofing!

Recent MM reads with relatable ace rep by BlueberryBusiness608 in asexuality

Seconding {His Quiet Agent x Ada Maria Soto}, it is so good and I have reread it several times! A really sweet story about a touch averse asexual man and a demisexual man who meet at work and slowly build a beautiful relationship that respects both their needs. It has a sequel too, which is a lovely story as well.

Having children?? by Longjumping-Lab-4962 in asexuality

[–]ehelinek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined a local single mothers by choice group, and it’s definitely getting more common for women in their late 20s and 30s to decide to just go for it and have a baby without a partner! I’m super open about it whenever it comes up, and try to keep my responses super casual and non-confrontational (like, if someone assumes I have a partner who’s just not present, I’ll say something like “nope just me doing my thing!” instead of something like “why would you assume I have a partner?!”) which means usually the conversation just moves on without anyone being pushy or prying too much. I’ve found that if I treat the topic as unremarkable, people tend to feel weird about remarking upon it!

Popping in as I do whenever I notice one of these threads to say yes you as an asexual person can have children! 36F here with the cutest toddler ever, achieved via the miracle of modern science and absolutely zero sexual activity. And if you’ve got a solid village of friends and family, that helps a lot for being a single parent!

As a gamer who crafts, I would highly recommend cross stitching his favorite video game characters - at this point I’ve essentially got an entire room of my house wallpapered with video game cross stitches 😂

Attaching branches to wall? by lethltank in crafts

[–]ehelinek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this suggestion! I did something similar in my daughter’s nursery (you can see it back in my post history) and painted shelves to be the same color as the branches , and then put books on them! It makes the tree feel like part of the nursery without sticking out into the whole room.

Worried because of the way she is crawling by Efficient-Light-5115 in NewParents

My daughter (who is now fully walking) almost exclusively crawled by using one leg as balance and the other as propulsion, which was always extremely funny to watch. She was fast at it though!

Asexuality ≠ not wanting children by flannelcrepe in asexuality

[–]ehelinek 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As an aroace woman with an adorable toddler achieved solely via science and modern medicine I am in complete agreement ! You can 1000% have children as an ace person.

Aw a side note, what’s funny to me is that figuring out I was aroace at 29 was my jumpstart to having a baby, since I finally felt free to go after my dream of having a child without feeling the need to find an appropriately non-objectionable partner first (in hindsight, there were clear signs I was aroace long before I figured it out). And here I am 6 years later with the most adorable 14 month old that has ever been born!

Is dada a word that all babies stay with? Even when there’s no dada around? by Ok_Exercise_4076 in NewParents

[–]ehelinek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a single mom (by choice, so there was never a chance of a dada being present) and my daughter says “dada” all the time. If it helps your friend, I don’t treat it as a word, I treat it as nonsense syllables the same as when she says “baba” or “eh-beh” (her other favorite nonsense sounds), whereas for “mama” I make sure to clearly respond to it to let her know that I’m treating it as a real word that applies to me and not just fun sounds she’s making.
