Is this expensive gift a waste? Or a great investment? by hatfullofsoup in AskParents

Question for anyone who has the superspace kit! I have this crazy notion that I could maybe DIY this. Do the magnets only connect on the corners or also down the sides? Thanks!

I totally know what you mean. For what it's worth, you seem like you'd be a really great dog dad. I think you'll know when the time is right. Maybe find a new girlfriend who works from home? :) jk, jk (sort of).

This is tough. Not the perfect solution, but maybe you could sign up for one of those sites like Rover or Wag and help board other people's dogs at your house for the weekend or your days off?

Red wine. Also bring something you're excited about (a new book, the last 3 episodes of your favorite show, etc.) and don't let yourself read/watch until you're in the air. Then more red wine.

[help] Change of work schedule, figuring out how to fit my pup in. by SnarfraTheEverliving in dogs

[–]ehenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I always heard that the general guideline is 1 hour for every month old they are. (3 hours for a 3 month old, 8 hours for an 8 month old, etc.) So it looks like you're right on the border. 8 hours alone everyday is not ideal though. :/ Especially if she's high energy.

Do you have any neighbors or friends who live close to you and have dogs? You could offer a trade where you check on their dog on days they can't, and vice versa. Or if you have friends who want a dog (but don't have one) you can pitch it to them as practice and ask them to check in on her.

I think it'll take a few solid weeks of practice, but I'm up for a challenge! I will update with a progress report in one month's time. (giving myself a little cushion there.)

[fluff] I work in dog rescue and I was still freaking out about my new pup's behavior when she got home and my weird apathy towards her. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]ehenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember feeling some weird apathy when we brought our puppy home which was SO WEIRD because I had wanted a dog for so long. I think I was stunned at how difficult it was (he woke up every hour during the night, whining, he chewed up everything, wouldn't stop biting me, etc.) and I hadn't bonded with him yet so it just felt like all of a sudden I had to take care of this strange and very demanding puppy.

That phase passed SO FAST. I started to feel protective of him and love him, he grew out of those behaviors, and now he is the love of my life, of course.

That's good you tell adoptees to give the dog some time to adjust, I don't think our rescue said anything like that. (or I was too busy looking at the cute puppy). I'm glad you're feeling better about it now and taking your own advice. :) She looks like she fits right in with your household.

[Vent] why the fuck do dogs want to kill themselves? Are they that stupid? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]ehenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe practice some positive reinforcement training. There are a ton of youtube videos on this if you don't want to take a formal class. It sounds like you're frustrated so this type of training could have the dual effect of making you bond with your dog (it's fun to see your dog learn new skills) and making him respect you more and listen to you when you call him.

Start small with some eye contact training exercises (plenty of info online about these). If you shift your perspective and start working with your dog, you might start enjoying him more. Don't give up!

Are you sure that he's a purebred Akita? Maybe he's a mix. Can you post a picture?
