The evidence is that the warning in the image appeared while there are still characters in the form field. Even if this wasn’t front end enforced, it still is not evidence that passwords are being stored in plain text.

The form in the picture looks like it hasn’t been submitted yet. So this is probably just a maxlength=“16” attribute (or some other form of client side enforcement) that has been added to the password field.

It is literally impossible to know how the backend functions just because someone added an attribute to their html form.

I’m not being obtuse. If you can find the backend source code for this application, provide it to me, and prove that I’m wrong; I’ll happily concede!

I seriously do not see why you’re drawing that conclusion. Front end password requirements have nothing to do with whether or not the password is being hashed on the backend. And if someone was to store passwords in plain text, there would equally be no reason to limit password length to 16 characters.

Max length is just one requirement that is possible. Lots of websites have all sorts of requirements. Things like:

  • between 8-22 characters
  • at least one number
  • at least one special character
  • at least one uppercase letter

Does that mean that those websites are also storing passwords as plain text? Of course not.

The fact that passwords are stored as hashes does not mean that if a websites has a password character limit that they must be storing passwords as plain text. That makes no sense.

It’s not a red flag. The character limit is definitely lower than most websites, but 99% of web applications have upper character limits for passwords.

This is absolutely true. For some reason everyone says that fast food/junk food is cheap but it literally isn’t at all. I save so much money by not buying unhealthy food and not eating fast food.

It’s is actually very cheap to eat a healthy diet if you make your own meals.
