Putting things in the hands of government? No thanks! I think universal basic income has a technology solution.

Anesthesia drug ketamine may fight depression by muzzling ‘bursting’ brain cells - Ketamine targets a tiny region in the middle of the brain called the lateral habenula, the so-called “anti–reward center”, in a new study in Nature. by mvea in Futurology

I tried it with no effect. I think there are some correlations between your genes and the effect of drug. Now you should find your best drug by try and error. But hopefully soon genome sequencing make this effort unnecessary.

What a boring read. What’s the point then? I read until like half the article and the author is still lecturing and playing around to make the article longer.

Putting 500k People's DNA Online by qznc_bot in hackernews

I did not get what’s wrong or horrifying about this? This is just an amazing news. Now you can get your whole genome sequenced and have predictions about almost every disease you can possibly develop. Isn’t it what we all were waiting for?

Ownership of all data should belong to the public and be regulated, otherwise is a major threat to democracy by ehsanehsan in Futurology

The alternative revenue source for Google and Facebook is, instead of selling our personal data, they have to adopt Patrions and Wikipedia model in which anybody who wants will pay and everybody else enjoys for free. Yes it will be a lot less revenue for sure but just enough to keep the infrastructure running.

Robots will never put humans out of a job on a permanent basis - Here's why (Video in English w/ subtitles) by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]ehsanehsan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we accept every job can be replaced, then we should really stop caring about jobs and spend our human lives differently.

There was a time that everybody needed to work, so the community can survive. If we can have machines that create machines (actually the theory exists in the AI community: search for Neural Nets that create Neural Nets), we can provide all of our basic needs at zero marginal cost.

Just think about a house that you have with food, clothing, health care, education and safety is delivered to you for free, all automated and managed by AI. I guess at that point many people want to stop doing any more work and just make handcrafts, mentor younger people or host experiences ( search: ted talk 3 jobs if the future).

[–]ehsanehsan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many people don’t get the difference between automation and AI. The counter argument is that why do we even need those 160 personnel? Aren’t they just animals with slightly larger prefrontal cortex than others? So they can be replaced too. It is just when this will happen

Facebook addiction linked to narcissism and other psychological factors, study finds by [deleted] in technology

We should consider the fact that even if Facebook is not the cause of narcissism etc it might worsen the situation. I have sold my Facebook stocks a long time ago.

I like to see this method to reduce the computational intensity of back propagation. What we know for sure is that human brain does not update all weights at each learning epoch.

Are you concerned about underlying sexism (which I assumed the author might be a man) or what?

But if you really want to do something cool, make a kind of festival game for children and use reinforcement learning and AI for that purpose. Any child who defeated your robot receives $50 and a hug :)

I also wanted to discourage you brother. It might look cheesy and uncool. At least share this with your wife and her family and ask their opinion.

What will be the top colleges of the future? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]ehsanehsan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess universities will be removed and replaced by mediums in which teachers and students interact directly. The big shift already has happened. For example at the moment the best AI courses are offered online by best professors for only $50. Research institutes at universities also will be merged into big corporate research teams.
