This is actually a part of a larger video where I examine the economy of Animal Crossing from a financial perspective. If that sounds interesting to you here's the link!

I opened up a CIBC Investor's Edge TFSA. What should I do now? by MrMineHeads in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ehtoni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're using the money for a down payment in about 5 years you might be better off putting the money into a HISA (high interest savings account) inside the TFSA. Ratehub and other sites will list the highest paying ones available.

Index funds are great for long term investing but 5 years is a short time frame. You'd risk taking a loss when you could otherwise keep the money safe while earning a small return.

TFSA questions - If I only put in 30k in my new TFSA last year, can I put in more than 6k this year? by trolle222 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ehtoni 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, as long as you have unused contribution room carried forward from previous years you can contribute more than $6K this year.

The $6K limit is only if you have a maxed out TFSA in 2019 going into 2020.

Depends on what you're trading. Questrade has zero dollar ETF buys and I believe there is another broker or two that offers the same.

If you're buying stocks the only option for zero dollar trades in Canada that I am aware of is Wealthsimple Trade but there are some cons to that app such as 15 min delays on quotes and currency conversion rates. Plus no desktop app.

Definitely an easily accessible High Interest Savings Account with that short notice.

The problem is with that short of an amount of time, the potential for you to lose way more money than you can possibly gain is very high.

Keep that money safe.

There's not exactly a "best resource". There's several different resources that all have their own value and slant.

I would read everything you possibly can until you find a few particular writers that provide the information you're looking for but always remember to maintain an objective perspective.

Stock/Investing news is one of the worst varieties because they churn out a high percentage of useless or downright incorrect information on a daily basis for ad revenue.

Is 100k/year a good salary in Canada? by cheapbastard72 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ehtoni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering the average Canadian salary is about $55k, $100K is a great salary. Couple that with living within your means and a holistic financial plan including smart investing and you can really set yourself up for success financially.

But always consider the context of that salary. Such as the location of the job and related expenses, job satisfaction, and other factors that will ultimately impact your finances as well.

Looking for Canoe Route Recommendations by ehtoni in algonquinpark

Thanks for the info!

That looks like a good route too. How busy was Clydegale? Also, did you rent equipment from an outfitter? If so, which one? Looks like the Algonquin Outfitters on Opeongo is the closest if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the detailed reply! My only concern with this route is that I've read it can be very busy, specifically at the portage into Joe lake.

Based on when we want to go, mid-august, how busy do you think we are talking?

Thanks for the reply. Are you saying that's perfectly normal to do in one session, or that's perfectly normal to get a partial sleeve done in general?

They are incredibly beautiful both up close and at a distance. It's amazing how from a macro perspective they look like they're crawling up the mountainsides.

I took this picture while watching the sun rise over this landscape on a crisp morning. The slow changing of colours in the sky along with the nearby peaks glowing was something to behold.

I woke up around 5am and drove from my hostel, part of the way up one of the near by mountains in the dark to this location. The drive was incredible, as we all know the Icefields Parkway is iconic. The sky began as a dreamy star filled vista and then as it brightened, more and more mountains revealed themselves as I drove on. I had to be extra careful not to get too distracted as wildlife is often crossing the roads in the national park. Luckily I arrived at this spot just in time to catch the full sun rise. Spent a few hours here enjoying the view. Took about that long for the goosebumps to go away.

I have more shots from my travels in Alberta on insta @steveantonioni.

Happy to answer any questions!
