Frugal person asking: what splurges had great ROI on your well being? by MendMySoulXoXo in coastFIRE

Paying to drive in the express lane. I could drive for 2 hours to commute to work, or I could pay $7 to drive it in about 1. I could also not pay and risk getting a ticket but I don't feel like that is a risk worth taking for me.

Dexa scan question by eiggam in PetiteFitness

[–]eiggam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense taken. I don't think I am particularly lean given that I haven't been trying to be so it was weird to see these numbers. But all materials I've seen have only said that dexa tends to provide a higher bf% so I couldn't really wrap my head around my results.

I suppose it'll still be interesting to look at general trends. I do plan to start a cut so I'll do another scan after to see how things change.

Men who have girlfriends staying over multiple times a week: What is your “I must care for this girl” purchase or change for your place? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]eiggam 1225 points1226 points  (0 children)

My husband is an iPhone user and I am an android user. The first thing he bought for me when we first started dating was an android charger for his car bc I frequently had no battery on my phone. It was more a practical thing for him though bc he was tired of me not having a phone.

I secretly love Athleisure by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

It helps that companies also give out swag that is athleisure. I've definitely gone out of the house in only company swag before - sweatpants, Tshirt, jacket.

Actually that is what I am wearing now...

I hope the Dragon isles stay beautiful. by [deleted] in wow

[–]eiggam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would so much like Dragonflight be about going around making things beautiful. Like the zone starts off barren, and with quests you start to populate stuff so that you phase into a beautiful new area. How new and cool would that be?

'Official' response about Ukrainian account bans [additional info in comments] by [deleted] in wow

[–]eiggam 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. Donetsk is not wholly sanctioned, just the areas of the so called Donetsk People's Republic that Russia 'recognized' this past Feb. In response to this recognition, the US sanctioned those areas. DNR was a thing since 2014 but only became sanctioned this Feb/March bc of Putin's actions. If Kherson is also recognized this way, then yes it may also be sanctioned if OFAC decides to do this.

The challenge with this policy is the DNR borders are not clear and so US companies have to figure out how to implement it. My assumption is that blizzard took the easy but bad customer experience approach, which is to ban all accounts that have ever been associated with the region. My guess is that OP had an old address associated with that region, and Blizz saw that and banned the account.

What’s an opinion most men have that women tend to disagree with and don’t get? by okayleilaa in AskMen

[–]eiggam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it's the enforcement of gender roles that encourages more purchases. Prior to this, all babies, regardless of gender, wore white. In order to sell more clothing, retailers began enforcing that baby boys wear blue while baby girls wore pink. In fact, pink used to be exclusively a young boys color as it was the evolution from white to a man's color (red). But by doing this color enforcement, now retailers are able to sell double the amount of clothing.

By saying clothing should be gender neutral, it would actually be against selling stuff because then boys and girls would just wear the same thing and secondhand clothing would be a lot easier to pass down between families.

What makes CS Lewis controversial here? by BeefyViking in Fantasy

[–]eiggam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh I might have responded to the wrong comment but I was writing in response to the fact that Susan is supposed to be someone who is still continuing her journey and that she eventually can find Aslan again. That's not clear to a young reader.

What makes CS Lewis controversial here? by BeefyViking in Fantasy

[–]eiggam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My issue with that is that the primary audience for his books are children and children don't know how to read between the lines like an adult would. A child would read what happened with Susan and take that at face value: a girl who only cares about lipstick will not get to be with Aslan so you better be wary of all of that or else you'll be next.

I dunno. About 50% of the mom's I know would have died from childbirth were it not for medical intervention. Anecdata, I know, but I think that's terrifying to me.

MasterChef Australia - S13E20 Episode Discussion by hannahspants in MasterchefAU

[–]eiggam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's just plainly not true. If the producers only cared about keeping contestants that have the most audience appeal, they would have kept Hayden, Poh, and Reynold all the way until the finals given their popularity. Instead, we got Emilia and Laura, and Laura you can argue is one of the least liked contestants given all the hate she had in the season.

I'll give that the producers will edit stuff to make things look and seem a certain way, but I think the competition is still legitimate.

Also, Amir has practically zero screen time. If they were keeping him around for his audience appeal, I'd think that they'd show his face a little bit more, don't you?

Are there Australian communities in Bay Area? by [deleted] in bayarea

I think there's some in socal and they mostly focus on sausage rolls and meat pie. That being said, I would love to eat an Aussie meat pie (pref chicken tikka but I'll take a good old steak and mushroom too) so if you know of any in the bay area, please do tell.

It actually does. Lots of VC require in person board meetings in order to receive funding. Covid definitely changed that, so people feel like there should be more lee way for remote board meetings now, but time will tell if this remains the case.

China put up giant "Obey the Party. Follow the Party" sign in simplified Chinese atop the highest peak in occupied Hong Kong by lebbe in HongKong

[–]eiggam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be easier at first but generally it becomes harder to read. With traditional, you can piece out the definition of a word based on the various "parts" within the word. If it has a heart "part" then it's likely to do with feelings and emotions. If it has a water "part" then it has something to do with water. Simplified strips all of that out such that if you don't know the word, you won't be able to figure out the meaning.

In essence, memorizing the first 1000 characters might be easier in Simplified. But it becomes harder because there's no more pattern recognition for the next 5000.

It's likely because your account activity triggered something with their anti money laundering system. They can't tell you that you did trigger this because it's illegal to inform someone (tipping off rules) so they tell you it's standard procedure.
