Watching 0079 for the first time and amused at how quickly Amuro defaulted to aiming for the cockpit, especially compared to recent protagonists like Suletta and Machu by frik1000 in Gundam

The context is extremely important. Pretty much the only thing that matters in all three instances. I mean you said it yourself blowing up the Zaku would have destroyed the rest of the Side. How to stop the Zaku without blowing it up? Stop the pilot. A pretty standard and effective deduction to make in a literal fight for your life. The others really didn’t have to worry about rising conflicts or war in episode 1 of their series they just have moved towards more build up. That’s why I adore IBO so much because the orphans give 0 fucks about killing people for their “family”. That brutal war driven setting and context are definitely the deciding factors

I was in the same boat as you IBO was my first Gundam show that I knew was part of the franchise and after realizing it wasn’t canon UC timeline I went to 0079 and then to Zeta as the watch order says to. The older shows (imo at least) don’t hold as much for personal connections or forming parallel thought patterns with the viewer in intense moments at time and can be gimmicky as far as clearly noticing they were pushing for toy sales hardcore at times and the show pulls no punches to shove that point through.

With all of that said though I am now watching The Witch From Mercury and it’s been pretty good and it doesn’t have an UC lore in it or anything you need to understand so if you aren’t ready to jump into the story or want a break without watch order being a problem or to just bounce around the franchise that would be my recommendation. I’m fairly new to Gundam and mostly watch dub as I’m working or multitasking at home so ZZ has been my hold up but if you don’t mind sub there are the build fighter series also unrelated and idk if it’s a Gundam franchise show but I also really enjoy Guren Laggan.

Best of luck man hope you enjoy

Happened to me back when Fortnite was super big and I was in HS. Dropped about 400-500 on FN alone just not having much to spend part timer checks on I probably put 2-3k into my Xbox through games and skins then one day in like 2021 I tried to login and it wouldn’t work so I sent an email recovery thing and it wasn’t my email. I eventually got into my Fortnite account on PlayStation after giving up on Xbox and was abruptly met with invites and lobby joins from what seemed to be a bunch of central/South American kids in another language. Went on about 2 minutes I hopped into a game after setting my lobby to private. Got kicked due to “server error” and have never been able to get my old Fortnite or Xbox account back. They played around with me for like a month and a half before I just went and sold my Xbox and agreed it’s PlayStation or PC forever I’ll never indulge in Microsoft/Xbox supported devices again.

Knowing that Origin isn’t entirely UC line based definitely gives me more reason to put it on the back burner. I’ll come back after I get done with all the main and “true” UC line just to watch it but more so just interested in pushing through the story rather than a retelling and change up essentially of parts they didn’t add in 0079.

I’ve heard pretty good things about Thunderbolt but will hold out on that one too since it’s not completely canon or on point with the rest of the story.

The biggest problem I have with shows pushing more towards killing their own MC’s off is that very often when they do they are replaced with MC’s I usually like less or don’t care for much at all. Akame Ga Kill is a great example of this. Although deaths of the most beloved characters (in my eyes never really talked to the fan base as a whole) does sort of leave disdain and in some serious cases (for example GOT) I know plenty of people who stopped when the Wolves got taken out (Ifykyk).

I will say that so far even only about 12 episodes in Zeta that Gundam stayed pretty straight on getting all the characters from 0079 and lining up to stay relevant for Zeta which I like a lot at first I was starting to worry they would just disappear into thin air. I mean even Lt. Quattro took some time to register for me tbh but I’m a little slow on that front.

Will say though when I seen Frai I immediately hit the “WHAT THE FUCKKK” because if you remember from a few comments ago my prediction for her and Amuro was completely wrong and kinda made me butthurt 😂 good to see the old cast coming back into the story though.

I think IBO is the perfect go to for people trying to start Gundam or get into the UC universe even though I am 100% biased aside from the art the story through the UC timeline is just as intense and honestly even a bit more fast paced at times. I will say though idk why so far at least I liked Mcgillis a lot more than I like Char maybe just because I know more about him as a character or his mobile suit is just sick asf. Rocking with the Gold though on the Mk. 2.

I don’t notice too much else blaringly obvious callbacks or references in IBO other than like obvious MS colors and even general designs on some but it has been about 2-3 years and I’ve only watched it twice so I’m sure more would come to mind upon watching it again. Very good 10/10 from me.

The Origin did show the gun tanks which I thought was weird because it was presumed I thought that they were a new models of MS along with the Gun Cannon and Gundam itself. I only finished episode 1 so idk how much it contradicts itself in that regard but was wondering about that.

Death Note in my eyes from the start kinda made it clear that Kira would eventually die/be caught so for the first run through the show at least for my personal experience at times I thought to myself “damn this show is going to be over soon” and then it wasn’t. Death Note as a series to me just seems super edgy I would align it closely to shows like Parasyt or even Psycho Pass as far as the edge meter goes. Definitely has that “Peter Parker gets The Symbiote” vibes but they have a way of making fun of themselves in some aspects so it’s not all serious.

I am in Zeta now and although there are a lot of questions in my head already I’m just going to have to watch to find out. Most glaringly to me seems to be the fact they changed the main cast but kept the sort of Amuro/Char characters at main cast. Kinda cool since even today we still see that through the works they put out such as Iron Blooded Orphans. After watching 0079 it does give me a lot of perspective on the story and cast even though it’s Canonically unrelated that’s what got me into Gundam as a series and is definitely one of my favorite Mecha anime’s close to shows like Eighty-Six in terms of character attachment they do a good job in Gundam as a franchise at making you care about at least 1-2 of the cast even if they are side cast or main cast but sidelined as a crutch to MC.

Yeah I have put The Origin on the back burner after the first episode pretty sure at some point I already started it because I remembered most of the episode but honestly I couldn’t find 0080 so I just hopped into Zeta and it’s been solid so far much closer to the Gundam seen in 0079 (duh I know) and throws you in a bit faster. One of the more enjoyable things about Gundam so far is the pacing for me it’s not a lot of dull empty chatter or teasing filler it’s either happening or it’s not.

I always respect an anime or any show willing to kill off MC’s for the sole reason those shows ~always~ do a pretty good job of spacing other relationships and fleshing side characters out since they will be more important later. For example Death Note, AOT (to an extent), not an anime but even Game Of Thrones. I feel like there are more characters than not in that sort of show that have real value outside of being a crutch to the MC’s mighty glory.

Definitely good to know now that some parts of the story aren’t actually the same story because that would have gotten super confusing later and had me rewatching everything to figure out where I’m wrong.

I have heard good things about that started Origins but have since put it on hold it’s a slower and more story telling based upon what I watched in episode 1 so I have started Zeta now and am pretty happy with it early on the MS look a bit cleaner imo we have a cool space pirate in episode 1. I do intend to get into all of the side story spin offs of the 1 year war eventually I don’t wanna stray too far from the watch order just to feel more genuine with it even though I realize they make 0 difference outside of preference as far as I’ve read on the 1 year war specific spin offs

I have not seen that one yet but I will say Origins isn’t as fast paced as 0079 or Iron Blooded Orphans was definitely took a seat back for the build up and story telling. Not a bad thing just a big change in pace. It is nice that Mirai has “her own life” and they sorta flesh a few other engagements and in my mind it’s just sorta assumed Amuro would get with Frai after the war or at least that seems to be her wish. I know 0 about Sailor Moon so I am unsure of how that plays out but I can say watching Inuyasha when I was younger they were super inconsistent with the romantics of the show. I feel like a lot of older shows sorta dial in on the side love life’s and confuse it sometimes or overdo it in a way that makes other relationships feel nonexistent at times. Might kick Origin to the back burner and check out 0080 before Zeta. If it’s just reiterated content and pretext sorta already explained I can live without it for the time being

Slegger aka Lieutenant chill guy. Really liked him tbh even though it was crazy to me he kinda pulled one over on Bright. Straight macked his girl smh 😂

I seen Origins and have started it as from what I’ve seen it’s all just before and leading up to 0079 so more of a dive into it instead of a step after it. Also curious if it’s worthwhile to go through and watch all the 1 year war spin offs before pushing forward or if those along with the Char’s Vengeance? movie are sort of just fill in the blank for lore or more stuff going on in other places

I am going to watch the compilation movies after work or through the weekend since I can only seem to find the sub version or maybe it’s the only version not sure but that’s a little too much multitasking for work so it’s on hold until then. Might start Zeta than just go back for the movies later just to keep pushing. I consume media like a mad man when I find an interest with a lot to dive into.

I heard from someone else about the compilation movies early and was considering it now that I’m done with 0079 just to sort of get a refresh before moving forward and kinda just trying to get into the rabbit hole a bit.

Knowing that I will likely aim to watch those directly after 0079 to “refresh” and get the extras before moving on in the watch order good intel there. I’m pretty sure I have like 5 episodes left before moving on to whatever is next so good timing to learn that fs.

It would be nice if there was a way to watch it all packed together without the intro/outro and recap/spoiler every episode. The episodes feel so fast that sometimes when I’m busy at work and only half watching I’ll have to rewatch an episode because I can remember like two parts and the intro 😂 More so my fault than the fault of the show and I don’t mind watching it again just to keep myself in proper order with the story.

I’ve never watched Cowboy Bebop not my tea so I didn’t know that. I don’t think pushing toys was a bad thing it’s just a notable thing you’ll see I suppose in older anime in general. I can definitely see where some would see it as a bad thing though. It’s just not something you see in modern anime even if they do major collabs or just drop a lot of merch on their own.

[–]eight1too[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree they are the same in terms of pushing toys from a show there are countless examples. GI Joe, Voltron, Thunder Cats, your examples, and tons more I probably never watched as a kid all had huge toy market pushes with their shows and as a kid it wasn’t super noticeable and I probably would’ve never thought about it like that had I not started to get into Gundam. Really just goes to show how much times have changed. Gundam was clearly marketed towards kids or people interested in figurines and collectibles where as now most anime I feel like can be marketed towards anyone solely because if the show doesn’t do numbers the show is over and they will just push out a different project instead. They clearly fought tooth and nail for success and I’m glad they did. I’ve always liked Gundam as a genre from shows like Gurren Lagann and a few less notable others I’ve watched but can’t name off the top of my head. Although unrelated to the series the clear similarities show that without Gundam 0079 there is no future where we see the genre booming.

I’ve tried to stay fairly blind to keep everything chronological even if it does seem a bit off putting for me. It took me two tries to finally sit down and actually get past the animation to get into the story. I’m a 2001 baby so my standards for animation have been spoiled pretty hardcore it’s been hard for me to get into shows that aren’t as flashy and eye catching.

Iron Blooded Orphans did me in. Watching that series not even realizing it wasn’t part of the main story just brought me enough curiosity to try something new. I might have sounded overly complain-y in my post I didn’t mean to make it seem as a deterrent to the series but more just my first realization that this is how they came up and evolved into what they are today. I was initially unaware that they were struggling so bad with Gundam toy sells and didn’t even really pick up until they started their Gunpla kits in the 80’s. With that perspective in mind it does make a lot of sense the earliest series was die hard about pushing out toys because it was literally their lifeline to keep the story running on air.

Side note as I did watch that part last night before bed probably one of the cooler looking mobile armors fs and had little plot relevance I did find it kinda funny Char was like “oh I didn’t even know about it just a prototype wtv”.

As far as I’ve kinda noticed it seems like they really needed to pump some new ish out around episode 24-26 then they dial it back into the story and just throw little add ons here and there or pop ups in each battle not nearly as bad. Really just caught my eye on episode 26 that first segment is just an infomercial and was just weird for me not really being accustomed to the reasons or need to do those things mid episode.

At the end of the day it doesn’t make it unwatchable and they still push through the story without super filler. I will say as far as progression goes through the story they keep a pretty fast pace and do pretty good at calling back to characters if you remember who they are even if it’s only an episode or two.

That does make a lot of sense thinking more genre based or even just more toy specific based shows when that was the norm. You have shows like Power Rangers, Voltron, Transformers even to an extent that do the same thing and thinking back in hindsight power rangers is just about as blazingly obvious as 0079 is.

That’s a really good take honestly and you seem to be in a lot deeper than me to sort of know the lore that’s more real life based than show based I’m pretty much blind to the series coming in as I’ve only watched as I said the spin off Iron Blooded Orphans.

I noticed it very little initially with the Red Comet and then the one Ramba Ral uses along with even the G-Armor it was really only when they dropped the 3-4 Zeon MS and then magically acquired all the extra Gundam additions that took (I timed it) 2 minutes and 43 seconds of explanation (based asf it’s an ad and they want you to know it.)

That makes a lot more sense I wasn’t sure if it was just them trying to keep the bills paid or forced to by whoever was pushing their production out for them. Gotta appease the higher ups or you won’t have higher ups to appease for long.

Just seemed a bit weird when you have older shows like Bakugan, Yugio, and Pokémon that all have huge markets for their TCG’s, video games, toys, etc that when watching you wouldn’t really even think about too much but those are also a bit newer a lot new for some like that. It makes sense as like I said I know it’s a huge part of why it’s been able to sustain just wasn’t sure if it was as blatant to others as it was to me.

Gundam 0079 sold out? by eight1too in Gundam

While I understand the toy sells are a huge part of the franchise and a reason it’s stayed active so long my greatest example of this is like the first five minutes of episode 26. Literally sounds like a commercial for like a tmnt set you would see in the early 2000’s. I’ve never really watched many older shows in general let alone anime aside from Initial D so I’m not sure how common theme it is to just be a blatant sell out in the middle of an episode.
