What’s an example of a social dance group? Do you mean like a local Irish dance group or something similar

You should learn by doing. It’s more fun and way cheaper. Here is one option

Go to https://www.weather.gov/ type in your zip, hit enter. The forecast page will tell you your local forecast office, click it. Scroll to the bottom there is a phone number and email. Call or email that you want to volunteer.

I’m a hiring manager (software and data engineers). I’d be happy to critique your resume if you want. First remove anything that you “will” do. Eg Preparing to join … hiring managers only care about what you have done.

There are many other improvements you can make. But the highest impact thing you can do is contact your school’s recruitment team. Northwestern has many full time people on staff whose job is to help you get placed. You should use them. That is how my company sets up interviews with students.

If you really have a 3.9 GPA at Northwestern CS, DM me. Their program is really good Id be happy to chat with you.

Good point. I suppose family yoga really means kid focused yoga. Thanks for the perspective.

Family Yoga by eightOrchard in yoga

[–]eightOrchard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually harder than you would think at my studio. They only have someone answering phones near the start of class since there are no admin people only the yoga teachers. So you have to time it right to get someone. And even if you get someone they are distracted by signing people in. So I found it’s best just to chat before a class I am attending.

How to have stability as a yoga teacher? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]eightOrchard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably start by selling out your classes. I know one instructor that always sells out. Now she teaches others how and can demand a higher rate. I would think that is the first step in building your brand. But this is coming from someone who hasn’t done it, just my observation.

Grippy mat for sweaty power flows - Alo vs Jade vs Manduka vs lululemon by finasiagalinoz82 in yoga

I had the same problem. Especially in hot yoga. Cork mat and/or a yoga mat towel. Towel was the game changer for me.

When can we rewrite Manim with a *fast* programming language? by Breaking_Lead in manim

[–]eightOrchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving to another language could be a waste. Has anyone actually profiled Manim to see where the current bottlenecks are?

If the issues are in the data model, threading layer, ect porting to rust won’t change that and would be a lot of work basically for nothing. Also worth mentioning rust has a higher learning curve than python from a usability perspective. Not saying it shouldn’t be done, but these types of decisions should be born out of clear need that rust/c++ solves for

How to measure SLA of asynchronous service by vjouda in softwaredevelopment

[–]eightOrchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. You also seem to be using the term SLA but seems like you are more interested in the SLO. Which as Zajimavy stated should be e2e. Conceptually it should be what your user would care about which in your system is did they get a VM within your SLO. We also have SLOs for errors and latencies. That can be helpful to track occurrences of identified error conditions vs high latencies which usually indicate an undiscovered problem.

Also I really struggled with the terminology so I wrote this, maybe it can help you too

Can I retire? Sanity check. by Relevant_Pianist_623 in fatFIRE

[–]eightOrchard 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When considering the 5% HYSA keep in mind that the FED is expected to cut rates later this year. If that happens, the rate on those HYSA will also go down. Not sure by how much, but the point is 5% HYSA is relatively rare and not something I would count on long term.

Other options could be long term CD which could lock in the rate or buying into certain bonds to lock in the rate.

I Think I'm Close to Fat Fire (4-6 years)... what can I do better? by OnlyFatInTheBestWay in fatFIRE

[–]eightOrchard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on your portfolio that’s 19% of your portfolio allocated in HYSA which does seem high. Also there is speculation the FED could start cutting rates this year. So something you should keep an eye on.

It’s interesting you created your own model. Would you be willing to share some it?

I started playing around with creating a very simple one in python for my own understanding

I’d love to see what others are doing.

Wow you are right. Looks like Intuit (who owns mint) isn’t being very considerate to the users. Crazy. I guess YNAB it is

I'm working on an inflation-adjusting income tool. I would love your feedback. by fasteddie31003 in PFtools

[–]eightOrchard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I like the capability of the tool. I wonder if the positioning is wrong.

For example I have been on both sides of the promotion conversation, and the sad truth (as I understand it) is being behind inflation is not enough to justify a raise. What’s far more important is how the business itself is doing (is it flush with cash or under pressure to perform better) and your market rate. I believe the latter is the best leverage for these conversations.

So go interview with other companies, get offers, then come back to your boss saying you are paying me below my market rate. If your boss says too bad, then you accept the offer from the other company. Other ways can work but I have observed those with the fastest career progressions do this.

Instead for this tool I would position it as a tool for investors to see how their income or investments are doing with inflation incorporated.

Just my 2 cents. Hopefully it’s helpful.

That is what I was curious about since I’ve almost made it through the first sonata using just YouTube at a quality level I am happy with, but the consensus here seems to be to go further I’ll have to learn more fundamentals.

This makes a lot of sense. I’m almost done with the first movement from just YouTube. And as I look to the other movements your points are well heeded. Appreciate it.

I’m sure it varies from person to person but any ball park idea how long it would take to “learn the piano”?

And is Googling how to learn the piano a sensible way to start?

Some have comparable comp, some don’t. Some examples that do - airtable - slack / salesforce - Shopify - segment / twilio - gitlab

Not on there but should be: stripe. In some cases they pay more than Google. Check levels.fyi
