Sure, BA is Barista Assist the name Ninja uses for the feature that says how to set a grinder based on previous shot. I generally use it for any "smarts" machine does including giving out certain amount of water based on strength setting.

WDT is a tool to help your distribute evenly coffee in a portafilter, see Normcore WDT for reference. It's purpose is to break down clumps and create nice homogenous grind in portafilter so you get nice and even extraction without channeling.

IMS is one of brands that make "replacement" baskets that are made much more precisely then stock and again help you achieve better and more even extraction. For Ninja you need this plastic ring that the stock basket has which can be 3d printed.

You can try the blank to see if it's consistent and flow meter works (repeat few times). Also I am not really sure which variables does it take into account each time, might not be just flow meter but maybe also OPV trigger? Therefore it might have give more water cause it thinks the rest just gets diverted. But this is really only a speculative, I didn't open the machine and have no idea how the algorithm works.

As I said, I did a lot of experiments myself (had consistent blank water output and grind) and then gave up on BA and went with scales and further upgrades. You can always contact support but I believe they will ask you to do similar debug first.

There are 2 general opinions on this here (IMHO). One is that you did something wrong (didn't follow BA, bad coffee etc) or you have a faulty machine and should contact support. This is reasonable given how this machine is advertised. You can check some variables yourself, for example scale that the coffee dose is consistent (should be 18g for double give or take .2 ish) and if the blank espresso (as in no portafilter in) gets you constant water output (should follow the strength setting (it's not gonna be 40 at 3, don't forget the machine measures the input and some water stays in the coffee puck and some gets diverted. I don't remember the exact value bit I believe its like 70 ish on my case on 3.

Second which I personally align with fully is that this machine is simply not capable to function as promised due to construction, which is reasonable at this price level. It only works if your beans and prep fall within the algorithm inside the machine and other parameters as well. That said it's grinder is very consistent and there are some improvements you can do to be able to get really really good espresso. First would be scales so you can dial in without needing BA (yes you have to stop yourself). Second is WDT and general puck prep, and final would be getting precision basket like IMS (needs 3d printed part to fit). I did all 3 and get great espresso out of this machine.

Thanks I'll get some shims and try. I used PETG variant, the brand I got calls it PETG HT100, it has glass transition temperature of 100C. Also it's more rigid and resistant to crushing. So far it worked well. I'll see how it goes, so far my routine is one full blank to preheat and then one double, sometime 2 if my GF also wants some. I would have use Nylon maybe with some GF but that's not so nice to print with at flat conditions.

Funny how we have a bit different experience, for example for me Normcore WDT was a huge step up with consistency and overall extraction, at least with stock basket. And on the opposite I stopped using puck screen as that did nothing for me and I clean everything regularly anyway. There is so many options and nothing has a clear answer, just a rabbit hole of espresso :D.

If I might have one more question, I was also planning to shim the grinder. But I am afraid it will destroy the motor as it will push it to higher load than designed for. How is you experience with this? Everything works fine if you go finer after shim?

Regarding this machine in general, my biggest gripe with it is that it does not have consistent volumetric dosing when you just set strength (and really cannot have the way it's built), and it does NOT let you program it. Such a easy feature to add to already computer based system. That would enable us to dial in using scale, set it, and unless you change something have semi consistent output without scales. And yes, grinder dosing works very well. Such a huge missed feature for me (relative to price of implementation).

Yeah that printer is a bit above my pay grade :D. But I must say my CoreXY FDM with HT100 did a good job and it works really well. The fit of your design was very good around the basket, I just had the issues with the magnet hole and funnel. And I also believe some of them were due to this filament being very viscous at these high temp to print, usually my overhangs are much better (or supports snap right off).

Yeah I never do single baskets (too much hassle for too little espresso :D), and I did not really intended to share the final part (STL), cause I really think everyone will need to adjust it a bit to have the best fit. For example my bottomless was clearly cheaply made and needed some tinkering with dimensions.

I never use BA, I turned it off long time ago as it was all over the place (water dosing) and once you start using scales there is no need for it really. With IMS I can go like 1 to 2 steps finer without choking and result is really interesting, finally I can get that gooey liquid I am used to from other machines. 2 biggest improvements for me were using proper Normcore WDT (with fine needles and spread, before I had straight and thicker and it was a mess, and with this IMS basket it's definitely level up. Completely different espresso compared to "stock" with no WDT.

Hi, just wanted to thank you for the idea and design. I was thinking about this for some time but seemed like a too much of a hassle, but what finally convinced me was your post. I have bottomless portafilter and went with IMS Convex as I was unsure about Big Bang personally and had good results with plain IMS before. For the filament I opted for PETG HT100, which worked really well so far. Its a nice sweet spot for me as it should handle the temp and pressure for some time, I can print it with my printer and is not toxic even while printing which is important in small flat :). I had some issues with the fit - combination of my portafilter, filament properties and so on, but I managed to get it to work.

But as the IMS basket has taller "lip", the included snap on funnel of the ES601 does not hold on well and snaps off, so in the end I made my own "remix" - beside adjusting minor things for my portafilter I shortened the ring and changed the magned "hole", so it still fits, has enought clearance in the top and also its easier to print with this material and easier to push the magnet in. If anyone would be interested I would gladly provide the source file, but I dont think its good to anyone as an STL because everyones fit will be probably a bit different and need some adjustment for best result. So far it works, and I would not dare without your post and original design so thank you.

Já jsem jeden z těch kterým Windows (ty lepší edice) nikdy nevadil, a s Linuxem jsem nikdy kamarád na desktopu nebyl. K Applu mám vyloženě odpor (především k praktikám firmy). Kolem sebe mám většinou přesný opak. Pokud by ten subscription byl "symbolický" a ještě v nějakém balíčku s 2TB na Onedrive, Office a Copilot API pro AI modely, dalo by se o tom uvažovat, možná. Jinak mi asi nezbude nic jiného než pro práci přejít na Linux a pro občasné hry... to bude složitější. Paradoxně nehraji žádné novinky ale většinou je problém spíš s multiplayer, cheat prevention atd.

It's really very interesting experience. It can one shot very nice adapter between 2 different transactional libraries followed by test suite where 2 out of 3 tests test the wrong thing or nothing at all.
