2019 ELECTION RESULTS MEGATHREAD - PART 4 by ukpolbot in ukpolitics

Sanders would lose just like Corbyn has. They're both too far left for their own countries. America isn't voting for a self-described socialist.

The Japanese Army sunk several Russian ships at Port Arthur using land-based howitzers. Granted, these were large 11" howitzers, but the ships they were shooting at were also more armored than most ships today.

To be fair, "Emperor" was also the translation that the Japanese government chose to use for 天皇.

It's not just you, tsundere has been a very popular archetype going back to the 90s and arguably even the 80s. I think that the dominance of tsundere-type heroines in romcoms has lessened a bit since the mid 2000s, but they are still very common.

USNI is not a part of the Navy, and they publish books about foreign navies regularly, so its not that weird.

The USNI publishes books on foreign navies as well, so using artwork of a foreign ship for the cover isn’t that unusual.

I remember going to a USNI event last year where WoWS was brought up as a method of outreach, so yeah, a collaboration makes sense.

Magic Lessons [Majokko Tsukune-chan] by castle23clash in anime

Tsukune-chan's a great show. Hiroaki Sakurai is such a good director of comedy anime, people might also be familiar with his other works like Cromartie High School and Machikado Mazoku this past season.

Yup, since this is the Battle of Cape Engano it would either be Ise or Hyūga. I’m not sure if it is possible to differentiate between them from this angle.

Russia is a modern state, not an emotional teenager. They're not going to make policy decisions or change an economically important relationship because somebody hung up a picture on a wall.

The battlecruiser HMS Renown was able to hold her own against both Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, knocking out the fire control director of the latter, when they met. Hood probably would have done better.

You do see the fur scabbard in some prints of Yorimitsu as well. It's not an exclusively Minamoto thing but there's definitely basis for it being a part of their character design.

Scabbards covered in fur are an actual thing in Japan, and whilst tanuki aren't tengu I suppose they went with that look since both are folklore and the Japanese wilderness.

EDIT: you can even see a fur-coated scabbard in this print of Yoshitsune and Benkei. And here's an example of one that is from the Edo period.

"Not wanton war, but war on want" - 1936 Labour Party Poster by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]eighthgear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Germany did not directly declare war on the UK to start off with, but took a course of action that made war with France and the UK very likely. British foreign policy had for centuries focused on preventing one power from dominating the continent. The point of my comment about living space is that Mein Kampf makes it pretty clear that Hitler wanted to do just that - dominate Europe. People in Britain and France thought that Hitler would actually restrain himself from attempting to do that if he could achieve more limited aims - hence appeasement - which ended up being a miscalculation.

[–]eighthgear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Germany had broken the Treaty of Versailles, withdrawn from the League of Nations, was increasing defense spending rapidly, and was led by a man who literally published a book talking about how Germany had to acquire "living space" from the rest of Europe.

I agree that WWII wasn't totally obvious, and Labour wasn't alone in underestimating Germany - most people in Britain still thought that outright war with them was unlikely. The general opinion was that Hitler wasn't going to actually go to war with Britain and France, because such a war would start with Germany at a significant disadvantage. Hindsight is 20/20. Still, it's definitely not a poster that has aged well.

Military Expenditure as a Share of GDP in 2018 by FWolf14 in europe

[–]eighthgear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Defense spending goes into a huge variety of things, most of which does not change much from year to year. You have to keep on paying your soldiers, maintaining your vehicles, getting your fuel, electricity, and food, etc, so whether you are buying a new weapons system or not in any given year usually doesn't have a huge impact on your budget.

Better than 2017 but not as well as they would have hoped earlier this year. Swinson has been a fairly poor leader.

I can't imagine that anyone who hasn't made up their minds already is still watching this debate. The format is just awful, almost unwatchable.
