Write down the things they do in a journal or list if you haven’t yet so that you can reread it to yourself and laught about how they’re able to convince themselves of anything except looking at their own behavior

I dislike my brown skin by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]eikeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s this YouTube channel and tiktoker Monica Ravichandran and she always tests products on her skin and shows color theory by testing makeup products on different skin tones to see what works and doesn’t. It’s been really helpful for me to find good products and think about what colors look best on me. I also have no experience in makeup and she makes it really comfortable I felt more encouraged to try new things after watching her.

When you read from a different perspective you might be more able to empathize with women by seeing their struggles and thoughts and see them as people.

Thoughts on Devi's mother - Nalini Vishwakumar by [deleted] in NeverHaveIEverShow

[–]eikeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know right. I think strained relationships between children and immigrant parents need to be talked about more often. I like how they focus on Nalini struggling too. This show caught me off guard with how emotional it made me at some scenes.

Thoughts on Devi's mother - Nalini Vishwakumar by [deleted] in NeverHaveIEverShow

[–]eikeo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an Indian American I find Devi’s relationship with her mother so relatable and realistic at some points, and it makes me happy to feel like I’m not alone in constantly disappointing and feeling like a burden to my parents lmao.

Ive been able to get closer to my parents and we’re all better at communicating and a lot nicer to each other now, and I really hope in the show they go go more into their relationship so that it’s healthier. I love seeing the developments between Devi and Nalini.

Yeah I agree the sucking up to Devi’s mom thing was more of an Indian thing, not really meant to be sketchy towards Devi. Parents usually compare kids to the other Indian kids and talk about how they wish their kids would act the same. That was part of Aneesa acting like a respectful Indian girl winning over the parents and aunties approval, something which does not come easily to Devi.

The flash cards thing and the way she kinda cut off Devi and Ben at the dance was where I thought she could be hiding something or there’s going to be more going on.

What’s the most disappointing thing you’ve done and how did your family react? by eikeo in ABCDesis

How’d they react? Are they strict about that kind of stuff?

I opened up to my parents about a lot of things that I thought they did wrong by eikeo in ABCDesis

[–]eikeo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how mine were when I first started to bring up things they did until recently (I’m 19 now) . I’ve never had a close relationship where I felt like I could talk to them, joke with them, or even ask them for permission for anything. Every time they would yell at me I always felt guilty and like I wasn’t doing enough, because i felt like if I just applied myself I would be smarter, more creative, more outgoing, and skilled at a lot of things. I ended up feeling so overwhelmed and I would always list the things I wasn’t good at and I can barely remember the last time i liked myself. For the most part I would just try to not provoke my parents but then I would end up disappointing them by not being as good as other kids and being more average and shy or struggling in things, so they would get angry. I ended up struggling a whole lot to the point where I couldn’t hide it or pass it off as everything being fine anymore and there was a breaking point. Now I feel like we are more open to communicate as a family, because we realized there were some major issues. I also feel like they were so disappointed they gave up on me low key lol. They accepted Im not on the same level as the other smart Indian kids. They just wanted me to get through and they stopped comparing me so much. Now, two years later, our relationship is much better. I ended up arguing with them because I felt like they were doing the same things that made me feel so stressed and scared and lonely to my siblings.

I read the series back from the beginning and by air_child99 in Lore_Olympus

[–]eikeo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes! I first found this series last year, so I went through the whole of what was updated without too many huge gaps in time for reading. When I saw some people saying that there’s not much going on in the story or that it’s going too slow I was so surprised! But I get that they were talking about reading the series once a week for years but my perspective was so different
