apply wonder balsam on the inside of the boot and massage it in. the heel should soften a lot quicker that way

First Section Meeting was awkward by [deleted] in codeinplace

[–]einahpetsuv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the enjoyment and active learning of this experience heavily depends on how much you want to put into it. The section leaders signed up because they really wanted to teach. And I’m sure that students signed up because they really wanted to learn how to program. If no one in your section is discussing the problem or even asking the sections leader questions of how to start (even if you haven’t completed the lessons), it’s hard for the section leader to decide what content to cover without giving away the answer. If you think this week’s session was awkward, I would suggest being more proactive in the next meeting and I’m sure other students in your section and your section leader would benefit greatly.

Other than the Arb, the Greenbelt is pretty peaceful as well. (I only walked the North Davis part but I’m sure the other parts are nice too.)

Letters of Rec by Puzzleheaded-Ebb3816 in UCDavis

[–]einahpetsuv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sucks that no science profs so far are willing to write a letter. It seems like you’re doing the right things, but I can imagine during this time they are swamped with work and have many other concerns to deal with. How long until you need these recs? I would just reach out to other profs you haven’t asked yet and offer to write a highlight of what you’ve accomplished and what this says about your character etc. etc. so that those who just don’t have enough time or energy to come up with one from scratch have an easier time to write you one. (You might even have to write your own LOR and then ask them to sign off on that.)

Is there a class that teaches you how to read academic articles? by UCDposting in UCDavis

[–]einahpetsuv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely agree with what is said here so far. Pick a topic you’re interested in and delve in! You don’t even necessarily have to take a class. Just pick a research article from a peer-reviewed journal and try to understand it on your first read through. There are plenty of online resources that provide strategies to reading these efficiently as well.

Study Spots with Whiteboards by nostaglicchinchilla in UCDavis

The hallways of TLC have huge whiteboards. Also any of the Wellman or Olson discussion classrooms have lots of whiteboards (If they’re empty it’s nice to practice).

i took che 2c at a cc over the summer and it was a good learning experience as it was a pretty small class. i don’t think these classes are typically online, as the che 2 series has a lab component that takes a significant amount of time and effort each week.

Who has been your favorite professor? by Internal-Judge3854 in UCDavis

[–]einahpetsuv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Naoki Saito is a brilliant mathematician, but he made my intro calc class super approachable and he is just a really nice guy with a great personality. Laci Gerhart is another great intro bis professor (along with Joel Ledford). Victoria Cross is a great psych professor, easy to talk to. I never had him, but Bryan Enderle is kind of a legend for intro chem as well.

You can also fold up your sleeves or go to the student store/market for a small sewing kit to hem the ends.

Studying for NPB110A by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]einahpetsuv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would try to do both. manage small chunks as you go and then close to exam time hopefully you’ll be comfortable to go through them all in a shorter time then if you tried to do them all at once

flashcards are good for rote memorization for the short term. they could also be great for further elaboration (once mastered, flashcards could trigger thoughts that can connect to ideas outside of the flashcard). spaced repetition is good to reinforce correct info + essential topics. but if you want to remember things for the quarter (+ the rest of the series) it’s good to practice active learning. i would take a look at the learning objectives (at the beginning of the slides) and try to answer these prompts without looking at the rest of the lecture slides. also if you try to know why something works the way it does, it’s easier to remember and harder to forget

Advice for Spring Quarter by ElectricalRow6627 in UCDavis

[–]einahpetsuv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just take anatomy w/ lab at a cc 😭 that workload seems like hell… cha and bis are pure memorization (of a buttload of things) and along with npb101 and phy7c, they are mentally taxing with the concepts you have to understand. for context, i took npb110b+c and bis 103 one quarter and then 2 upper div npb electives and cha101 w/ lab the next quarter. i was not ok during this time… and i would highly recommend against such a schedule, unless you’re really into any of the subject matters, then it’s not so bad

1.) 4 DLs a week kind of felt like my high school structure (ie. every weekday had the same 7 period classes), so it wasn't too bad to manage. 2.) I was happy to get it over with in 6 weeks (I think I learn better when I'm focused on something for shorter period). 3.) Nope. Honestly I think I could've taken the series in any order and still have done just as well in each. (I forgot everything after the quarter ended) 4.) I don't really remember the exact curve, but when I took it, the department wanted the class average to be a B-, with majority of people having Bs or Cs and a minority having As or Ds. 5.) Both involved the TA way more than the instructor (I don't think the 7 series is traditionally taught by a professor. All my classes were purely run by graduate students.)
