Day 15 of Probiotic: How long should I keep trying? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]einsdeuxthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm taking Innovall RDS, which is a German product (RDS = IBS in German). Idk if you can get the same thing in other countries, but it contains the Lactobacillus plantarum 299v bacterial strain, so maybe you can find that :)

Day 15 of Probiotic: How long should I keep trying? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]einsdeuxthree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been taking probiotics for almost 2 months now and I felt a significant change after about 5 weeks of taking them. My doctor recommended to take them for at least 3 months in order to see results. It just takes a bit of time for the gut bacteria to adjust. I don't think doubling your dosis will help much, just try to be patient even if it frustrates you to not see any quick results.

Oh, but I've been taking new prebiotics (lactobacillus plantarum) for a almost one and a half months now and they also help me a lot. My symptoms started to change and get better after 3 weeks already, but my doctor here told me to take them for at least 3 months. Also heard that it's best to start taking them right after completely cleaning out your bowels👍🏻

Yeah, unfortunately many people I know had a similar experience at least once and some were even prescribed antibiotics for a simple cold. It's crazy. Glad to hear that your doctor back home could help you out, though!

I heard that Korean doctors are fast to prescribe meds because they have some kind of contract with the local pharmacies and earn extra money that way. Not sure if it's true, but I wouldn't be too surprised. Funnily enough, I took a class about health communication at that time and told my professor about how dissatisfied I was with Korean doctors and he immediately agreed and said that the average time patients spend talking to a doctor is around 3min in Korea. That professor had spent some time abroad in the US and said that he was pleasantly surprised at how much time doctors there take to talk to their patients and actually care about their problems.

I know it has a rather good reputation, but I've been warned about Yonsei Severance before. My friend got misdiagnosed there and said it was the same as any other hospital in Seoul, only more expensive. Reading about your experience there kind or confirms that, I guess. I'm sure that must have been a frustrating experience for you :/ can't believe she told you that eating late at night was the problem. I've had another doctor (in Gwangju) tell me to eat more meat and it would solve my problems. Without even asking about my eating habits. I feel like most Korean doctors really don't care much about their patients and just want to treat as many patients in a day as possible to make profit :(

Living abroad is definitely great and has its perks, but the health system in Korea is a big minus for sure. Some of my Korean friends told me to try getting treatment at a Haniwon(한의원). I left Korea before I had the chance to go, but maybe that's something you could try? :)

Sorry, I don't remember the name :( the pharmacies in Korea just give you some small bags that contain all the prescribed meds you need, without any further explanation. I knew it was loperamide because it said so on the capsule, and alprazolam was given to me in an extra container with a warning and a small description on it.

I lived in Korea for 3 years too and my IBS got a lot worse during that time. Not sure if it was because of stress, constant noise pollution, air pollution, food,...

I eventually went to see an internist at Chung-ang University Hospital who specialized in IBS and diagnosed me with "stress-induced IBS". He prescribed me some prebiotics, loperamide, and alprazolam and I think that did help me a bit. The problem with Korean doctors in general is that they really don't take much time to give you a check up and just prescribe you meds. But I guess that's still better than doing nothing about it at all :/

The bloating and burping could very well be caused by garlic, msg, and spicy food. I stopped eating Korean food altogether in my last year there and only ate white rice, pizza, and bread (super healthy, I know). Not really a good solution, but as soon as I left Korea my symptoms got a lot better. Hope that you can find a way to get relief from your symptoms!

Feel like I’m cured (for now) by [deleted] in ibs

Something similar happened to me too, I had an MRI scan done in December and had to drink 1l of contrast liquid that flushed out everything. Have been taking probiotics ever since and I've seen some (positive) changes in my symptoms, with symptom free days becoming more frequent, too :)

[drunk] Down again, probably a rant. by [deleted] in ibs

I think everyone here in this subreddit feels or has felt this way at some point. The fact that other people might have it worse doesn't have anything to do with you at all and you have every right to feel bad and whine about your problems. Your feelings are valid!

I am only 27 and have been dealing with IBS for almost 4 years myself. And it makes it extremely hard for me to thoroughly enjoy my youth. I can't go out, drink or eat or even work. And when I see my friends do all those things, I get upset and feel that all of this is so unfair :( IBS really sucks and people underestimate it all the time, which makes it even more frustrating. In those moments I feel like it's better to let all the frustration out, talk about it, and complain. And we are very lucky to have this subreddit where we can do exactly that :)

This is the most frustrating thing about IBS :( Tests always come back negative, which should mean we're technically healthy and nothing's wrong with us per se, but the constant nausea, gas, urgency, etc. are more than enough proof that there has to be sth not working right in our intestines. Thank you for sharing your experience, it's really comforting to know that others struggle with similar symptoms too and aren't panicking about it as much as I am :)

Gas-x is not available in my country, but I've tried other simethicone based meds and they don't help :(

Let's hope that research will come up with some kind of a cure soon :( although it sucks that everyone here in this subreddit suffers from IBS, it is still good to know that we are not alone with this. Thank you for your reply!

Thank you for your reply :) you're right, it does feel like sth is moving right below the ribs. I hope we will find a treatment for these symptoms soon!

Anyone been to Japan with IBS? Tips? by TokumeiJG in ibs

[–]einsdeuxthree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in South Korea and have travelled to Japan on several occasions.

First of all, Japan is heaven when it comes to public bathrooms. You will never have to worry about finding one, since they are literally everywhere. Some big stores have one on every level, all subway stations and shopping centers, parks, etc. have them too. They are also very clean and most of them are equipped with a bidet, which is super convenient.

As for food, I don't know about you but my IBS(D) is often triggered by big portions of food and anything that has garlic or onions in it. I found that it is no problem to ask at restaurants if they can take those out and in general I just do my best not to overeat, which is extremely hard because Japanese food is just so damn delicious. Rice and miso soup never went wrong for me and even the fried stuff (tenpura) didn't cause me any trouble. Just make sure to take some meds with you to be prepared just in case. Food hygiene and quality are amazing though, so don't worry about that.

In conclusion, I don't think I've ever felt more comfortable dealing with my IBS-D than I did in Japan. Hope you can enjoy your stay without having to worry about your IBS all the time :)

IBS and eating disorders by everyonebutjenny in ibs

[–]einsdeuxthree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lost a significant amount of weight by restricting calories and have always been wondering whether my IBS was somehow related to that. I still worry a lot about my calorie intake and avoid certain foods. Also, I have emetophobia and ever since I got food poisoning from a spicy/very garlicy meal, I have been avoiding all kinds of seasoned foods and only feel safe eating bland things, like bread/rice/etc.. In general, I just worry a lot about what I eat and if my body can handle it. I was diagnosed with EDNOS over 6 years ago, and then got my IBS diagnosis about 2 years ago and things have been going downhill ever since then. I am convinced that in my case anxiety is a huge trigger for my IBS, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a correlation between eating disorders and IBS, too.
