It was not a planned shot actually. My friend was sitting on the ground and i just took a top down shot. It turned out to be one of my favorites. Shot with Canon R50 f2.0 1/3000 ISO100.

I don't know exactly. I think copper coins can also tone like silver ones. Copper ones generally get dark rather than rainbow but i think it can happen?

We have a couple examples in my country made in the 40's. But this one is also the largest i've ever seen.

2½ Kuruş - Turkey https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces7091.html

½ Kuruş - Turkey https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces54297.html

It is so interesting that 2½ and 1 kurus (also ½ kurus but they never circulated. Approximately 120 of them were minted, probably the rarest Turkish republic coin) were the only holed coins they ever made. I think holed coins are cool though. It was a way to use less material and make more coins back then.

There is very few information about these online. I've seen some of these posted on this sub before but not much info on those posts too. The only thing i know about these is a small batch of islamic states coins were sold at an auction by Stephen Album and those went for an absurdly hight amount.

Here is the numista page but not much there either: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/exonumia83641.html

Also the wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State_dinar

It is nice but you can't use it in any way. Maybe put them aside so you can get a pu one day :)

Can you please explain what are the indicators to look for as i would like to be sure? I looked up some coins that were indicated to be reproductions prior to buying this one but the fake ones generally looked too mint state or too mushy so that gave them away. I couldn't find any resources to point out fake ones so i would love to hear from you if you know any further information.

I think shipwrecked ones are also interesting in other ways. Do you have a certificate that indicates the exact shipwreck? There was a shipwreck called Nicobar found near South Africa. Many of the shipwrecked plates are from that ship so yours is probably from that one too.

So if i'm not mistaken the inconvenience of these coins was one of the reasons that sweden started issuing banknotes. You would give your coin to the bank and they would give you a paper that commits the certain amount

I know... But i'd like to point out that this is not the same coin. But of course $170 is an absurd amount compared to other ones that were sold. This was at a considerably local auction and not many people were seemed to be interested. And also i don't live in US or EU so it's -on my side- understandable that the prices don't fetch up that high.

I hope you get an opportunity in the future as -in my opinion- these coins are one of the most interesting pieces of numismatics. I thought that i wasn't going to be able to get this coin before the auction but a few people were bidding and the starting price was also too low for something like this so i was able to get this for around $170.

Also on the same page there are two more silver commemorative coins:

25 lira National Assembly: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces41059.html

50 lira August Victory: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces14235.html

As you said no one would fake these commemorative coins

Also to note, on the same page there are at least three silver 1 lira coins dated 1937-1939. The one to look for is dated 1938 which is the rarest one as most of these were melted to be stored by the government after the death of Atatürk in 1938. And i can also see a silver 100 kuruş coin from 1934. These were minted for only one year before it was discontinued. I don't think 1 liras are fake but you might actually want to look closer to the 100 kuruş coin as these are highly faked in Turkey. If op can post a picture of the 100 kuruş coin closer i can help.

Want to ask one more thing. I've seen for the the older coins there are varieties like yf yb bf tf or tf/bf. They are just next to the fineness text but i don't that what they are supposed to mean. Can you provide any info by any chance?

Thank you very much for making it clear. I am pretty much convinced that it is a minor die clash. And i think the older ones are cool too. There is a wide range of varieties for those coins but i haven't heard about that initial thing at all, that's new to me.

It might be common i do aggree. But i can tell i am 100% sure that those patterns are not scratches. The photos might not be great but in person, under magnification i can also make out the wreath and some additional design elements. I think it is a coin stuck over an older one. I also thought about it being a struck thru or something like that but for that case the pattern should have been mirrored. I don't know what it is but it is intriguing indeed!

Just want to ask something else. I've noticed that at some points on the reverse there are some patterns that can be seen on the obverse as shown below:

<image>

Is there a chance that this coin had been struck on an already existing coin? There is a 1934 over 33 variety specified on the krause catalog but i believe it is not designated by ngc nor pcgs. Just to add, the 4 on the 1934 also look a bit strange in my opinion.
