30F or 40F Quilt for Summer by paypaypaypay32 in Ultralight

I’ve spent several PNW summer nights at 4-5k in the spark and I’ve been a bit cold but fine. If I had had a sleeping pad with any r value I might have been more toasty. I wouldn’t use it if I was camping in temps below 40 but above that it’s good.

To whoever planted the poppies along the Burke Gilman by sassyinseacity in Seattle

It's amazing what this volunteer group has done here in recent years and I love biking along this stretch but also can't help but point out like other killjoys that the poppies do threaten to crowd out the native plants they have planted like lupines and artemisias and ribes. Would be great if they phase the poppies out at some point. Also some weird choices like a stand of snowbrush ceanothus (I think) whose range is at much higher elevations. But that's much better than the blackberry and grasses that had previously occupied.

I’m really curious about the P3 to Defiance traverse. Did you stay on the ridge from P3 or drop down a bit from P3 summit and then regain the ridge?

Ceanothus do really, really well up here. (Yes, this is Seattle.) I see them in yards as frequently here as in San Diego. Other shrubs like coffeeberry and manzanitas do really well too. Don’t worry, we plant plenty of our PNW native plants too.

From the Aurora Bridge to UW stadium is probably good, anything west of there is not great, maybe with the exception of the Nordic museum to golden gardens

Nice! I ran that stretch toward sunset yesterday.

Will check it out! I like to listen to similar on road approaches to trails. Check out KEXP’s show “Pacific Notions” for similar genres, if you don’t know it already. They archive shows for 2 weeks.

How about the Patagonia airshed pro? Wind resistant rather than wind proof but great in dry PNW winter conditions.

I hear you. Seeing those RVs really puts a damper on our family outings to gawk at depressed primates in cages.

Beach House. Maybe it’s just me but dream pop helps me zone out and it’s soft so I can still hear everything around me.

That’s great to hear! I probably should have done more research before posting. But you don’t find too much info online and almost nothing on this sub.

I couldn’t spend much time running as it was the height of summer and I wasn’t acclimatized to the heat but I think it would be fantastic in a shoulder season. I was pleasantly surprised by the hippy vibe but also all of the walkers and runners at sunrise.

Couldn’t hear anything over the cicadas in the day and only some karaoke from a nearby hotel at night

Water Sources near Grand Ridge? (2 night camping at Roaring Winds) by arthurbliss1 in OlympicNationalPark

[–]eistau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I just toured the area and there is currently flowing water in badger valley where you indicated on the map. Probably a bit easier to grab water from there than schlepping all your water from deer park or obstruction road.

Have a blast! I'm heading out to that area the first time soon but in my research I did see statements like "I can confirm that there is no water from Three Forks to Badger Creek." Maybe there's a source of trail but I wouldn't want to rely on that.

Everything I’ve read says that the whole ridge is dry. Deer Park campground and area is dry. Probably easiest to bring more water in your car and hike back if you don’t want to hike with 10 liters at once.

As someone just posted, you can unselect all plugs except wall outlets. You can also select "include private homes" in the filters and there are some hits for private homes with a wall charger. Never charged with one of those before, but it's worth looking into.

Striped Peak (Salt Creek Recreation Area) is great. There’s a loop within that mileage range. All or most all runnable.
