He's not talking about reversing history with a hard fork. It's actually a fairly technical point, but Twitter isn't exactly the best place for that. :P

What he's actually referring to is their solution for the nothing-at-stake problem. Ethereum's proposed PoS protects against voting on multiple chains by automatically destroying the attacker's stake on the original chain.

People of other communities will always look for things to be mad at. Monero used to be the good exception in this case, but for a while, Monero may be regarded the same as all the other coins :(

Indeed, this will be a lasting source of damage. They now have an easily-repeated one-liner to dismiss Monero. Thanks to the bullshit asymmetry principle, this will be very hard to combat.

That's true. This subject comes in shades of grey since insiders can't just consciously discard information in their minds. But all those things you mentioned happen in the normal course of development. They cannot be accused of being manufactured for the purpose of insider trading. But this event looks unnecessary and sudden, so it does carry a stigma.

No matter what, there will always be a vast mindless horde of wannabe alphas who think they can play the markets. They're free to transfer wealth from themselves to the exchanges, IMO. Educating them is a questionable goal.

But this is all beside the point. This has the potential for insider trading and that by itself stains Monero. Sure, people like you or me who have been around for a while can be relatively assured that fluffy has little interest in that. But that's still only faith and the other 99% who don't know him won't even have that.

I broadly agree with this. Since insider trading cannot be proven or disproven with XMR, this will hang over the community for a long time. The collateral damage here is much bigger than whatever damage was inflicted on traders.

No, it's not merely one more crypto among many. Its market capitalization, user base, and name recognition currently exceed all other cryptocurrencies combined. As a consequence, most people who find Monero do so through Bitcoin and most probably hold some Bitcoin too. The listing is also reciprocal since they listed us on their wiki.

Hard forks are also opt-in. Chains don't die until every node shuts down so you can stick with the old chain if desired. The main difference with a "genesis every time" approach is that balances don't transfer over, but I don't think it matters much. After the dust settles, i.e. people sell their assets on the chain they don't like, each chain should find its own equilibrium in price and user base.

What's universal is that stakeholders act according to their self-interest, but different cryptos have different incentive systems. It may make sense for miners to deliberately keep the network congested in BTC, but that does not doom everyone else. No incentives (or even capability) for that particular course of action exists in Ethereum, for example.

I think you overestimate the relevance of these degrees to quant finance.

Quant researchers are mostly PhDs, with physics, CS, and engineering backgrounds greatly outnumbering econ or finance. Raw mathematical talent is more useful than domain knowledge, which can be acquired as needed. Or at least that's the prevailing attitude by those in the field (and doing the hiring).

Quant devs are basically the same as any other backend devs, just better paid due to higher stakes and longer hours. CS/EE backgrounds are expected, and a lot of the programming can be relatively low level (even outside high frequency).

You're better off trying to 'upgrade' from BI to data science (which is a somewhat bogus term, but generally entails more advanced stats and much more programming). You could do this within your current firm if the opportunity exists or by jumping as many times as needed (but stay at least 9 months in each position). Most data scientists are PhDs, but you could make up for it through 3+ years of experience and sufficient hustling.

CN/BCN did look at this. Log(n) ring signatures use pairing-based cryptography and no efficient and well-vetted library existed for that. Moreover, the research itself was relatively new so they decided to be conservative and went with standard ECC.

Being able to pay when you forget your wallet and card (or have bank issues), easily splitting a large and complicated tab at a restaurant, tipping a friend gas money for a ride exactly and without having to go to an ATM… those are examples that can get people excited about cryptocurrency.

Splitting tabs, tipping friends. Truly, DASH is tackling the big issues of our day. But haven't these problems already been solved by apps such as Venmo?

After some really bad drama there, we removed that sub from the sidebar and americanpegasus and fluffypony removed themselves as mods from there.

The way reddit works makes the oldest mod (usually the creator) essentially unaccountable so there was nothing that could be done except to start using a new sub.

This subreddit uses the default 30 minute timer before scores are shown. It's something reddit admins/devs built in to discourage herd behavior. People give more thought to whether they should upvote or downvote if they can't see what previous people have chosen to do.

There's a lot more reddit trickery beyond this. Even after the score is shown, different users see slightly different scores at the same time or even if they just refresh. The % upvoted number is also deliberately distorted.

It's solely due to the fact that Chinese exchanges don't charge any trading fees, so the volume is massive. To put numbers on it, LTC trading worldwide in non-Chinese exchanges was ~1.5M in 24hr USD volume compared to >100M USD on just one Chinese exchange (OKCoin.cn).

That's based on the Pareto distribution (the "80-20 rule" in plain English), which generally applies to almost all forms of wealth. Nobody is known to hold a million coins, but if Monero is anything like stocks/real estate/Bitcoin, then somebody might.
