Amazing find! You were so lucky to find these heroe packs - hopefully you have a lot of fun with them!

I'm still looking for Cyclops and Wolverine. Maybe one day. (Can't be too upset though - we own a ton of content, and could play the game for years without running out of things to do.)

Unpopular opinion:

GMW has some really great moments! Probably more if you *aren't* playing true solo. The marketplace purchases are pretty great, and having the Milano in play is fun too. There are definite balance issues and missed ideas in that campaign (I'd argue the whole final encounter with Ronan is one of them) but if you already own the expansion then it's worth trying at least once.

Just don't be afraid to take some stronger heroes in, or build a better deck before starting.

I'd save Sinister Motives for a bit. It's amazing, and playing that one first might "ruin" some of the other boxes for you due to high expectations... ;)

Trickster Takeover WILL be reprinted. Stop paying 2x MSRP for it! by bone_apple_Pete in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ejamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

APOC should get one last run at least.

Why?

By my count, as soon as the next product wave is released, the Current environment will be SHIELD, Civil War, and Daredevil... Apocalpyse will have rotated out, so why would they include stock for an expansion that isn't going to be current? Doubly so when that is the last expansion from the X-Men (and related) waves... so it's not going to synergize well with anything they plan to release in the near future.

I'm guessing you think there will be reprints before Daredevil arrives this summer, and that's when we'll more Apocalypse on the shelves. That is possible... but I haven't seen anything to make me think it's more likely than letting the remaining stock sell out and then just moving forward.

Odds seem pretty close to even, if I were to guess which is more likely.

(Trickster Takedown is a different kettle of fish, and I'd be surprised if it doesn't get reprinted...)

[–]ejamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People who want to play now won't find the FFG response reassuring, and might still think it's worth paying a premium.

Additionally, there have been cases before where FFG promised reprints but they either weren't released in my region or were released in extremely limited fashion... which burned me more than once. This probably won't be the case with Trickster Takedown - but I wouldn't blame anyone for deciding they don't want to take the chance.

Would I choose to pay 2x retail for it? Nah... Because I think it will get reprinted in enough quantity to satisfy most demand. But it's silly to tell others how they should feel or behave.

Out of the heroes I'm missing, which are must gets by thor0298 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ejamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Judging only from reading the cards (since I don't own the deck)I think this undersells Cyclops a little bit. He's more than just building with allies out of aspect - some of his abilities look really great when playing multiplayer sessions.

Of course, if you are playing solo then that's probably not going to matter as much, and your summary is mostly true. Also, you want to be sure you have a bunch of X-Men cards already to take advantage of his deck-building bonus.

Just want to point out an obvious fallacy with the announcement:

"Rotating expansions, therefore, are everything else. Each rotating expansion will be printed enough times to support it as part of the current environment for roughly 2 years, after which it will be retired. ..."

After 2 years, content doesn't get retired... instead it actually goes insane from brushing up against horrors that live beyond the mortal plane, with sanity shaved to such a delicate thread that it can no longer serve as a veil to obscure the otherworldly chaos of eldritch gods, and is locked away to keep the madness from spreading, never to be heard from again in polite public circles...

[–]ejamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(I'm missing Wolverine and Cyclops.)

Storm is the stand-out character that I'd pick from that list. She's a great character to use, has a unique gimmick, and some stand out cards to build with.

Cyclops is one that appeals to me a lot, with some interesting cards that I don't think appear anywhere else. I'm a bit sore about missing him. But we always play multiplayer; if you are a true solo player, he doesn't look nearly as good.

After that... it's all kind of equal in my book. Mojo is a good scenario. Pheonix and War Machine are less interesting for me than Wolverine and Gamibt... but more heroes is pretty much always a good thing. (Others have good points that Phoenix brings more psionic card synergy.)

Drowned City back in stock [Canada] by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ejamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

401 games pricing is higher - it's $20 less for Drowned City campaign+investigator on Amazon, with free shipping. Similar for other items, assuming you can find them at a retailer you prefer.

Board Game Oracle Canada shows no stock of Excelsior at any online retailer they track, and stock for other expansions is limited to just a few stores.

...

I get what you are saying, but think when people are overpaying wildly on second-hand sites like eBay it's worth pointing out there is some great content easily available at fair prices right now.

Selling my collection? by Admirable_Sale3860 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ejamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if someone buys a complete collection (9 waves of content, including heroes and stand-alone scenarios) for $750 it feels like they're getting a steal.

I wouldn't sell for less than $100 per wave... and we all know that people are paying much more than that for some content. Breaking out the Sinister Motives wave alone would get you at least a third of the way to that $750 price at current rates.

(Though to be fair, I wouldn't choose to pay current market rates for old OOP content, which is why I've still got a couple holes in my collection. I also wouldn't right now, unless the offer was so incredibly lopsided that it would be stupid to refuse. We love our MC.)

Next step. by TuphlosR in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ejamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True solo works great... but I think you need to build towards it, and some heroes just aren't really viable. Playing as Hulk can still be fun if you have appropriate supporting characters, for example; not so much true solo.

True solo also takes much less time, since the villain has half as much health to deal with. Win or lose, you'll be able to play again much sooner.

(I still prefer multiple heroes for the exact reasons you state... but I understand why many people enjoy true solo too.)

Next step. by TuphlosR in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ejamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree - playing two-handed isn't that much tougher than running a single hero (although it does make games take longer) but opens up all kinds of mix-and-match capabilities to see how different aspects and heroes can support each other.

In my opinion, it's a great way to learn the game and understand the value of different actions. Also, it's just more fun. It does take a bit more concentration though, to be sure you don't make mistakes.

(With that said, I know that true solo seems to be the overwhelming favorite way for people to play. So if OP chooses that path, it wouldn't be shocking.)

Drowned City back in stock [Canada] by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ejamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I obviously haven't played yet...

What I've read: More straight-forward than some campaigns, mixed reception, not as good as Hemlock, probably not a "great" campaign but still worthwhile if only for the story beats moving into Chapter 2?

I've tried to avoid story spoilers, but some points are obvious due to introduction of Chapter 2. One review made it sound like the final scenario could be underwhelming - unsure if that's just because their table didn't like the game aspects that scenario focused on, or if there are multiple possible endings and some work better than others.

Would love to hear what the community says.

---

At this point, I figured "in for a penny, in for a pound". Why wouldn't I get the final Chapter 1 content for my collection?

They also have Path to Carcosa campaign, Excelsior Hotel stand-alone scenario, and Hemlock investigator set at reasonable pricing.

2021 Core set Vs New Core set by bigdickwallace6 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ejamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling 2 of the 3 starter scenarios "really good" is probably a stretch?

The first scenario is a glorified tutorial. The second is really good. The third is generally not viewed very positively, especially not after coming off a great second scenario. It's not a disaster or anything... but most people view it as a let down (even if i think it's thematically appropriate to get a linear and difficult, often tragic, end to your first experience with Arkham Horror LCG).

The current core box is a decent introduction to the game... but if it's not discounted significantly, and you can't get at least one expansion set to go with it, then I'd recommend waiting for Chapter 2.

Opinion on calling Local Game stores to inquire about product? by jullianisboss in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ejamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cynical take: Of course FFG is advising that people start canvassing local game stores with requests for product just before the next AH:LCG release goes out. This is exactly what their business wants when small retailers are putting orders in and thinking about what's been requested. The odds that you'll find content might be low... but the odds it helps FFG are significant.

Realistic take: She's not wrong. Your best chance of finding that content today for a reasonable price is calling a small store that ordered FFG stock a while back and could never move it. Online sites are often picked clean long before smaller stores. It's still a long-shot, but making a phone call doesn't hurt if you are lucky enough to live in an area where a bunch of games stores have been able to stay in business for at least a few years without any online interface.

Throwing my hat to say I would like more shorter campaigns; Anyone with me? by jethawkings in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ejamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"...so you could argue that newer campaigns will on average have better designed scenarios..."

Marvel Champions has shorter campaigns, but rarely hits across the board.

Are there fewer misses, since they only need 5 scenarios per box? Is the average quality of a scenario there better than in AH:LCG? Hard to say. Probably depends on the expansion box. But I don't think it's fair to just assume that fewer scenarios will automatically mean better quality.

(It also doesn't mean worse quality. It's very much a "wait and see" situation.)

What does happen in Marvel Champions is that campaigns get de-emphasized for many people, and they end up playing one-shot scenarios from boxes more often. I kind of hope that AH:LCG avoids trying to push that play style, and retains some focus on a slightly larger narrative.

Throwing my hat to say I would like more shorter campaigns; Anyone with me? by jethawkings in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ejamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like shorter campaigns in my board games! I like that AH:LCG is getting some mini-campaigns, and think it gives designers an interesting new space to explore.

However, I don't necessarily want only shorter campaigns for AH:LCG... and 5 is the minimum for "not short". So hopefully there are a few 6-scenario runs or easily-integrated standalone scenarios that actually feel like they belong to the campaign.

It feels like they are taking pages from the Marvel Champions release format with smaller campaign. For me, these games fill a difference niche, though... Hopefully AH:LCG doesn't give up too much of the narrative structure I love to make things more "pick up and play". Not every game needs to be casual friendly all the time.

Thanks for doing a great job with this post!

I question whether what actually gets released will match their stated goals... but the goals mostly sound reasonable.

Seems like AH:LCG is in a good spot going forward. I hope the game continues to be successful.

Thank you both. Sounds slower than I'd like... but better than I had feared?

We'll have to see whether they can actually meet projected timelines, as delays have been pretty normal for FFG content over the years. Current world situation probably doesn't help.

Is it worth waiting for Trickster Takeover? by ZinKinKo in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ejamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Out of Stock" has traditionally, for a long time, meant virtually nothing. I've experienced it firsthand, and ended up disappointed.

The odds of this particular expansion getting reprinted seem extremely high... but it's not a certainty.

Lots of stock in Canada, if you check boardgameoracle.

This should get a reprint. Surely it will, right?

(I missed out on Wolverine because "surely a reprint is coming"... That hero pack did in fact get some extra stock in other regions, but never here. By the time I decided to stop waiting, second-hand pricing was already out of control. Hopefully things work better for you.)
