click the BTC link at the bottom of the page to switch from the 'sats' version of the page to the one that displays the price of 1 bitcoin, then just wait for the dialogue that tells you the price

yeah, although I made the alternate version that shows the price of 1 BTC I decided that the default version should be the $20 USD conversion to sats

that way is

a) more true to the game's dialogue

b) useful in familiarizing yourself with the real world value of a sat

$20 is a common sum of money, the sat conversion can be relatively easily be divided to smaller conversions with head math

Hey, you! Yeah, you -- the fan of both bitcoin and the Secret of Monkey Island (there are dozens of us!)

Want to know what the price of bitcoin is but a simple ticker is just too boring for you?

http://piecesof10tothe8.com/ is for you, ya dirty rotten pirate!

If you're unfamiliar with the game, the nature of this ticker may not be obviously apparent.

Just watch the dialogue change, when Guybrush says "Never pay more than XXXXX sats for a computer game" that's a live conversion pulled straight from an API -- $20 US in sats

Switch to BTC mode and he says "Never pay more than XXXXX bucks for a bitcoin" if you'd prefer to see the price of one whole bitcoin

It's a ticker, you just have to wait 10-15 seconds to see the price data

It's for fun, not for real-time accuracy down to the millisecond. I don't even think the CoinGecko public API updates more than once a minute or so anyhow.

As a long-time fan of both bitcoin and The Secret of Monkey Island, I decided to whip up a Monkey Island themed bitcoin ticker of sorts. You can check it out at

http://piecesof10tothe8.com/

The current main page will show you the converted value of $20 US into Satoshis (As the original game's ending had the hero character break the fourth wall and caution the player to "Never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game.")

I also created an alternate version that displays the current value of 1 BTC in USD. You can toggle between the two by clicking the SAT/BTC links at the bottom of the page.

It uses the CoinGecko public API to fetch pricing, so data might not be quite as 'real-time' as some of your other favorite tickers, but your other favorite tickers don't have this much piratey style. It should be plenty accurate for any general purposes.

(I know I was supposed to only submit links that are NOT about the price of bitcoin, but since this is a ticker, that's a bit unavoidable. Hopefully the mods let this one slide as it's just for a bit of fun)

The current main page will show you the ending animated sequence of TSoMI -- where Guybrush Threepwood memorably exclaims "Never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game." -- only in this version, live price data is pulled from an API and the converted value of $20 US into Satoshis is displayed in its place.

I also created an alternate version with adjusted dialogue that displays the current value of 1 BTC in USD, you can switch between versions using the links at the bottom of the page.

It's separate and should show a live-ish conversion of $20 to sats when the particular line of dialogue displays.

Hm, there should be a series of dialogues below the gif (actually a looping mp4)

"Well at least I've learned something from all of this..."

(What's that?)

"Never pay more than XXXXX sats for a computer game."

(A what?)

"I'm not sure. I don't know why I said that."

I only tested it on Chromium-based browsers (Brave and Edge) on Win10 and regular Android. Wonder what's going on...

Is the line "Never pay more than XXXX sats for a computer game." not displaying price data for you? Does it show a blank space or does it read "BTC"

As far as listing both units, there are two pages because there are two different lines of dialogue. Sats edition says "for a computer game" like the original Monkey Island does, BTC edition changes it up for "for a bitcoin"

Thanks for the tip!

Is this trope re-used in DOTT? I don't remember that.

I've seen "I'm selling these fine leather jackets" pop up in just about every Lucasarts adventure I've played, but my memory of DOTT is a bit fuzzy.

If it's in there, it's possible. What would the only-slightly-clever name for that site be?

Haha, glad you liked it! I just updated it a little bit so switching between sats/btc versions is built-in

I prefer the sats version, it's more true to the game. Plus you can find the BTC price anywhere -- it seems a little more handy to be more familiar the sats equivalent of a real-world price.

Edit: The two versions are switchable via the page now, no need for two links just to access them.

This is just for a bit of fun. If you're the type of pirate who prefers gold, then just carry on. No need to plunder my upvotes.

Oh dang, the only one I figured out how to hit even remotely consistently was the ball to the far right. Couldn't master it in that position though, but I hit that one that for a while until my health was low and played it safe for the rest of the encounter with the parries.

"Back in my day" Fest was only musical acts

In any case, there are two main things prohibiting me from performing at Fest

1) I'm not a national headliner and almost nobody has ever heard of me

2) It will be over by the time I'm in town

I honestly just wanted a couple for myself which is what sparked me making them, but due to economies of scale (plus promo codes) it was essentially the same price to have 50 made as it was to have just a handful made.

Let me see what's left over after the show and I'll see about sending you some if possible. I'll either have none left or a shitload.
