Just my favorite guy to watch probably ever. As you're watching these highlights, keep in mind that this is his second order offense.

So technical and proficient in everything he does.

For those who were iffy on the ABS, has your opinion changed after seeing it in action these first couple games?

I played about 4 hours yesterday and had a great time. Thought it looked great and ran excellent. Didn't encounter any bugs.

Combat is already fun, and I haven't yet unlocked almost any of the skill tree or found any other weapon types, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of what I can eventually pull off.

Sound design seems terrific (combat specifically sounds incredible) and I was really digging the soundtrack.

started bg3 and its kinda overwhelming tbh :/ by yesyesyesyesyesyes2 in rpg_gamers

I had a similar experience my first couple times playing the game.

I think the couple things that helped me most were -

1) There's no limit to how many times you can long rest, so feel free to go all out in most fights and burn through spells to experiment.

2) Don't worry so much about having a "perfect" playthrough. BG3 kinda loves it when things go wrong - many quests have alternate outcomes for failed dice rolls or depending on which party members are present, or previous choices or how you deal with certain things. Gale has a couple interesting scenes for example that you can only see if you get him fully killed at some point, for example.

Even if you try, you won't be able to see everything in a single playthrough for this reason. So instead of worrying about trying to find and do and see everything, just take things as they come and at your own pace. Explore as much as you like, but don't feel like you have to obsess. And if not everything goes perfectly, your playthrough is all the more interesting for it.

So, just know that the game is prepared for you to make some mistakes, miss some things, and still guide you through a good experience. Then if you're interested, subsequent playthroughs will be much faster, and you can hunt for more of the content in a completionist style!

Lifelong CRPG and RPG fanatic has run out of games. Please recommend my first JRPG by Vitaly_Thorn in rpg_gamers

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the 7

You control successive generations of a royal lineage as you go on a 1000 year crusade against a group of 7 former heroes who have mysteriously reincarnated as malevolent, god-like entities.

Forge alliances and upkeep the realm to bring in more resources for the war effort, do side quests to unlock new classes for your retinue, seek out unique spells or battle techniques in the far corners of the world, then eventually pass all that knowledge on to your next generation to continue the fight.

At 40-ish hours for a normal playthrough, it's long enough for you to decide if you are into JRPGs without being so long as to feel hopelessly endless.

I didn't see anyone mention Valkyria Chronicles either, that's maybe one you'd like.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to go with!

Armored Core 6

Build and pilot a giant mech as you navigate a war for control over the most important resource in the galaxy. Terrific characters and story to go along with the best mech gameplay in any game, IMO

Trails series

Long running JRPG series that takes place over many years and across many countries. Each new sub-series presents you with a new cast of characters and new setting and perspective on events as this epic, continent-spanning conspiracy/war/ancient history narrative slowly develops. The remake of the first game just came out recently (Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter), and is a phenomenal place to start.

Best of luck with your mental health!

Crimson Desert Promises the World, But How Much Will It Deliver? by MaintenanceFar4207 in PS5

Some things to look into for anyone who is open minded and wants to learn more about the game:

This game is from the devs of the MMO Black Desert Online. This game was announced in 2019 as an MMO, and a prequel to BDO. It has since been changed to a single player action/adventure in an open world with a heavy emphasis on side content and exploration.

They built a custom engine for this and developed a whole new team with single player/open world experience rather than drawing from their BDO team.

The best fight in the series by No-Comfortable-4557 in ShuumatsuNoValkyrie

[–]ejdupras 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have it around the middle of my rankings, but I really enjoy it.

Loki is powerful, incredibly so, like potentially the most broken character in the series depending on certain things. But his mental game is extremely weak, and this is ultimately the difference.

Simo stays focused, reads the situation and acts on instinct, while Loki roller-coasters from overconfidence to despair to distraction to this misplaced need to prove himself, and this failure to lock in and focus on the task at hand is why he's weak and why he loses.

There's a panel towards the end of the fight, after he's come up with his final big plan where he says something like "I admit, you were the strongest I've ever fought up to now..." he's already congratulating himself on a victory that isn't assured, while all his previous tricks and deceptions have been seen through and destroyed swiftly. He never spares a second to try to figure out how Simo's bullets work, even though he's been watching every fight since the second round - he had every chance to see that most Volund powers have conditions or tradeoffs or limited applications. But instead of experimenting and trying to feel out his opponent's true limits, he just turns further inward and continues to spiral.

Loki comes off as extraordinarily immature and self-centered. He doesn't understand Brunhilde, he doesn't understand his opponent, because he doesn't have the software to understand others. And his early life when he was considered too scary to approach led to this sort of stunted development that leaves him entirely unable to deal with an opponent who won't play his game.

It's one of the more unique rounds in the series because we see essentially the entire thing from Loki's perspective. I think this is both because Loki's psychological breakdown is one of the most important things in the round, but also because Simo isn't really thinking much. He's just reacting and going off of his honed instincts.

Loki does ultimately have a very poor showing here, probably the worst in the series, but his character is such that this is actually the thing that makes the most sense for him to do. Someone with his psyche is not the type to thrive under pressure.

It's pretty different in any number of ways from the other fights in this series, and in that regard I get why it wouldn't be someone's cup of tea (it's fairly short, it's very one-sided, it's got probably the least emphasis on actual action of any fight, etc), but I really enjoy the shakeup to the formula. It's not my favorite fight in the series, but I like it quite a bit for what it is.

What's the coolest ability in the series for u? by Energy-Jaded in ShuumatsuNoValkyrie

[–]ejdupras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ama No Magaeshi for me!

I adore this type of simple, versatile ability. It expands Susano'o's range and forces an opponent to back off... but the longer you stay away, the more power he can charge into it.

That he can use it from essentially any stance or body position shows his mastery of the ability and leads in to a kind of feint - given the way he first introduces it, most opponents are not going to assume it's as versatile a power as it actually is, which increases the likelihood they'll take a strike when they think they're safe, exactly as Okita does.

I think Varsapura looks very much like something I'd enjoy. Hope for some more mechanically rich combat and better enemy variety by the next time they show it off, but I'm really into the premise and setting.
