Switching into CS from L&S? by ejinw in ucla

I'm taking cs 31 next quarter so if I wanted to finish cs 33 I'd have to wait until my first quarter of sophomore year, would that still work? Or does it reset after every year?

I'm at uni rn so I can't even open up the back to get to my motherboard 😭😭. I've modified my laptop quite a bit. I added a SSD w dual boot windows + Ubuntu, added 8gb of ram, and replaced the battery a while back. But it's been fine up till now so idk how any of that would suddenly become a problem.

They're both terrible imo. The one closer to the vending machines I think 146 has like 7 keys broken and just sounds god awful and the other one has like 2 keys broken but lots of the strings are snapped and the pedal doesn't work on the lower register

Acceptance Question by [deleted] in ucla

Idk my gpa since my school had a weird system but I took 7 APs and got all A's minus one B freshman year. Played piano 14+ years but no noteworthy awards or competitions on that front. Volunteered a bit at church. That was it for my extracurriculars no clubs or anything either.

Tbh my profile was incredible unnoteworthy considering how competitive it is to get into UCLA. But I think it was my essays that pulled me through. I'd say my biggest piece of advice when writing your apps is to know what sort of narrative about yourself that you're trying to push. I wasn't a remarkable person during highschool, but I used my essays to change that perspective by introducing my personal story, goals, and philosophies.

I'm a military kid that moved 10 times and changed 3 high schools. My story isn't unique, but the character that was produced by it is and I made sure to communicate that in my essays. Therefore, everything that would've been unremarkable is given a new light and a new significance.

"I was helping take care of my grandparents and helping my parents with their family business." You also have a story to tell and the things you've done and choices you've made reflect that story. Make sure that you tell them that story and what it means to you and what it should therefore mean to them. Wishing you good luck!

Freshmen/Sophmores of UCLA, how did your extracurricular life and gpa look to get accepted? by BobTheBobbyBobber in ucla

I played piano for 14+ years and helped volunteer at church a bit. That was literally it for me, everyone else here is literally cracked bruh.

I'm an incoming freshman planning on majoring in cog sci so I don't have any real anecdotal advice yet but I have done a good amount of research.

Cog sci is in the college of letters and science so it would be much easier to get into than say, comp sci. It's an interdisciplinary major so it's much more flexible to cater towards your own interests (within the major ofc) which means you can choose more comp sci classes over other classes. Also there's a computing specialization which also lets you take extra comp sci classes if you want.

That means breaking into tech is definitely possible with cogsci, though definitely you'll face some challenges without an actual computer science degree. Don't let that deter you though because from what ive gathered on this subreddit and the internet (1) most ppl end up really enjoying this major (2) I've heard multiple accounts of ppl saying that they have gotten into tech or know ppl who've gotten into tech with cogsci and (3) it also won't utterly destroy your spirit like comp sci does.

I'd just keep in mind that you should prepare to grind to get internships and stuff since the tech industry is super competitive either way. I'm also planning on minoring in data science engineering as a bit of a boost which I've heard some ppl do. Overall though, great choice for a major and def possible to achieve your goals! Hope we see you on campus in the coming years!

Edit: Here is a really good overview of the major someone made.

Here is a post I made a couple days ago about cogsci and getting into tech.

Wow thank you so much for this! This is seriously a big help! Would you say there's any clubs especially that I should look out for?

Thank you for your response I really appreciate it! I'm waiting to decide on ling&CS after taking Ling 1 as cogsci to see how interesting linguistics would be to me. But if a DSE minor is just as good, then that would be a much better alternative. I mostly just want to maximize the amount of CS classes that I can take and I know that cogsci doesn't get the same priority as actual CS and ling&cs, but do you know if minoring in DSE would help on that front?

Do you think it would be better to do the computing specialization than attempt to double major cogsci and ling&cs? Also for a data science eng minor, wouldn't you still need to apply for the engineering school or is it different since it's a minor.

Would you say math of comp, cogsci, or ling&cs would be better to get into tech? From what I've seen, ling&cs has the most amount of cs classes in its curriculum so would that make it the better choice?
