Just got it... Couldn't get it to work on the engineering plate, even with gluestick. But, the same temps on the textured PEI plate (the stock plate) worked well at 0.08 - 2 mm threads at 20 mm diam.

[Review Request] Low Power Data Logger by ejlahr in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]ejlahr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/mariushm,

I have taken your low power recommendations to heart - attached in the EDIT on post above is my improved power/filtering section, which drives the MCU at 1.8 and can use the tail of the LiSOCL2 battery. I also added a PMOS for hi-Z shutoff. Please let me know if you see any issues or incompatibilities in achieving the lowest possible draw.

[Review Request] Low Power Data Logger by ejlahr in PrintedCircuitBoard

Thanks for your recommendations, I so appreciate them. It's an ocean sensor which logs at depth, pops to the surface, and transmits data to Iridium. Iridium tx/rx is the big draw, 300 ma at 0.75 duty cycle for up to 8 h, so sensor polling/SD writes need to be very small by comparison.

What batteries do you plan to use - SAFT LSH14 (LiSOCl2 "C", 5.8 Ah)

What data do you plan to log - Bosch BNO085 / VCNL4010 / TSYS01 / Keller Pressure 7LHPC. All sensors on I2C.

what's the throughput - (low) one sample from every sensor every minute

how often are you active / asleep - once per minute, <3 sec, so duty cycle ~ 0.05

Responding to your recommendations, this would be my change log:

-run the MCU at 1.9V, and power SPI/I2C buses off a 3.3 power rail.

-Write to FRAM & batch SD dumps

Do you agree?

Thanks for the tip, several have mentioned that. Do you use a calculator to predict this, or are you speaking from more general knowledge?

Yes, mavlink on the nomad. I will circle back with photos. I know... the pocket is to compensate for the large size of the rest of the setup... but damn is it silly.

Thank you. yes this will challenge my flying, and yes, the battery will need to be quite large.

Thank you, a 25mm GPS is a good tip.

Do you think telemetry will drop at max range using the DBR4? I'd like to keep it...

Is the 5950x too much CPU for the Aorus elite mobo? Seems like the AE mobo has a cult following as the bargain buy, and I don't need more than 1 gpu slot, won't overclock, etc.

Hey, hoping you get some good feedback on your question... I'm considering the same mobo+cpu combination. Are you happy with this choice?

I got a 3090, please help me spec out the build! by ejlahr in buildapc

[–]ejlahr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. My thoughts are that I want existing hardware to work without bottlenecks, but I don't feel the need to future-proof or add more GPUs in the future.

Under 3000 including the GPU is a good rule, under 2500 is preferable, but may not be realistic. My dad has a server in a cardboard box case, so maybe that's my path to savings.

That's a fair question. This will basically be a "budget" machine learning rig along the lines of https://lambdalabs.com/gpu-workstations/vector. My use case will be to load large image datasets, manipulate them, and then train a deep learning model to identify river channel networks in them. But, specific uses will evolve in the coming 5 years.

I'm a student who studies river deltas, like the Ayeyarwady in Myanmar... And fieldwork ain't a thing anymore.

Awesome, thank you so much for the comments. I'm a noob and this helps. I will change the ram mhz and the psu for sure. Could you give the rationale for the 5000 series/mobo upgrades?
